    The Holy Ghost

    C h a p t e r 7

    The Holy Ghost Came to Adam and Eve

    WhydidAdamandEveneedtheguidanceoftheHolyGhost?

    Ater Adam and Eve let the Garden o Eden, they began to till

    the earth and work at other tasks or their living They had manychildren, and their sons and daughters also married and had chil-dren (see Moses 5:13) Thus, spirit children o our Heavenly Fatherbegan leaving His presence to come to the earth as they had beenpromised (see Abraham 3:2425) As they came to earth, the mem-ory o their heavenly home was taken rom them But our Fatherdid not shut them away rom His infuence He sent the Holy Ghost

    to comort and help and guide all o His spirit childrenAdam and Eve called upon Heavenly Father in prayer He spoke tothem and gave them commandments, which they obeyed An angelo the Lord came and taught Adam and Eve the plan o salvation

    The Lord sent the Holy Ghost to testiy o the Father and o the Sonand to teach Adam and Eve the gospel (See Moses 5:49)

    Through the power o the Holy Ghost, Adam began to prophesy

    concerning all the amilies o the earth, saying: Blessed be the nameo God, or because o my transgression my eyes are opened, andin this lie I shall have joy, and again in the fesh I shall see God(Moses 5:10) Because o the witness o the Holy Ghost to Eve, shesaid, Were it not or our transgression we never should have hadseed, and never should have known good and evil, and the joy oour redemption, and the eternal lie which God giveth unto all theobedient (Moses 5:11)

    For teachers: When you call class members by their names, they know they are important

    to you and that you care about them. Learn their names, and call them by name duringeach lesson. Help them learn each others names.

    Attributes of the Holy Ghost

    HowdoestheHolyGhostdifferfromtheFatherandtheSon?Whyisthatdifferenceimportanttous?

    The Holy Ghost is a member o the Godhead (see 1 John 5:7; D&C20:28) He is a personage o Spirit (D&C 130:22) He can be inonly one place at a time, but His infuence can be everywhere atthe same time

    Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are called theGodhead They are unied in purpose Each has an importantassignment in the plan o salvation Our Heavenly Father is ourFather and ruler Jesus Christ is our Savior The Holy Ghost is therevealer and testier o all truth

    The Holy Ghost is our Heavenly Fathers messenger and is a specialgit to us (see chapter 21 in this book)

    The Mission of the Holy Ghost

    WhataresomeofthetruthsthattheHolyGhostrevealstous?

    The mission o the Holy Ghost is to bear witness o the Father andthe Son and o the truth o all things

    The Holy Ghost will witness to us that Jesus is our Savior andRedeemer (see 3 Nephi 28:11; D&C 20:27) He will reveal to us thatour Heavenly Father is the Father o our spirits He will help usunderstand that we can become exalted like our Heavenly Father(See Romans 8:1617) The prophets o the Lord have promised,By the power o the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth o allthings (Moroni 10:5)

    Without the Holy Ghost, we could not know that Jesus is the ChristThe Apostle Paul wrote, No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but

    by the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 12:3) The Savior Himsel said,And this is lie eternal, that they might know thee the only trueGod, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent ( John 17:3) It is by

    the power o the Holy Ghost that we are led to understand and livethe gospel o Jesus Christ

    The convincing power o the Holy Ghost is so great that there canbe no doubt that what He reveals to us is true President JosephFielding Smith said:

    When a man has the maniestation rom the Holy Ghost, it leavesan indelible impression on his soul, one that is not easily erasedIt is Spirit speaking to spirit, and it comes with convincing orce Amaniestation o an angel, or even o the Son o God himsel, wouldimpress the eye and mind, and eventually become dimmed, but the

    impressions o the Holy Ghost sink deeper into the soul and aremore dicult to erase (Answers to Gospel Questions, comp JosephFielding Smith Jr, 5 vols [195766], 2:151)

    President Smith also said, Through the Holy Ghost the truth iswoven into the very bre and sinews o the body so that it cannotbe orgotten (Doctrines of Salvation, comp Bruce R McConkie, 3

    vols [195456], 1:48)

    As members o The Church o Jesus Christ o Latter-day Saints, weshould make ourselves worthy to receive this special messengerand witness o our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ
