Gospel Library for Android Help About Gospel Library Gospel Library for Android allows you to study the scriptures, general confer- ence, magazines, manuals, and other publications on your Android smartphone or tablet device.
As you study the content, you can create annotations— such as notes, tags, links, and journal entries — which are then synced to Notes and Journal on LDS.org.
Help Material You can view the help material for Gospel Library in the following formats:
l Mobile Webhelp: Online display for mobile and tablet devices. See https://ue.ldschurch.o- rg/mobile/gla.
l How-to Guide (PDF): Same content as online help but in an easy-to-read, print PDF format. See http://lds.org/go/glahowtoguide.
Downloading the App You can download Gospel Library for
Android by searching for "Gospel Library" in your device's store.
Gospel Library works on both smartphone and tablet devices that have Android 2.2 and later. (The latest Android operating system is 4.2.)
Screencasts Several screencasts demonstrating key features of the app will soon be available.
Page 6
Release Notes The following new features are included in Gospel Library Version 2.3, released in November 2012.
Study Notebook for Viewing All Annotations Although you could make annotations previously on Gospel Library content, version 2.3 introduces a Study Notebook view that consolidates all your highlights, links, notes, journal entries, and tags in one view.
To view the Study Notebook, tap the App Home button , and then tap Study Notebook. (See Figure 1.)
Figure 1. Study Notebook
This consolidated view of all your annotations is similar to the Notes and Journal view on LDS.org.
As long as you're logged in with your LDS Account, all of your annotations sync to LDS.org, and likewise, your annotations on LDS.org sync to your Gospel Library app.
New Annotation Types: Tags and Links You can now annotate content with two new types of annotations: tags and links. (See Figure 2.)
Release Notes Gospel Library for Android
Page 7
Figure 2. Tags and links
Tags are keywords that you add to a passage to group it with other passages dealing with the same topic. For example, if you're studying about "testimony," you could tag all passages you read related to this concept with the tag "testimony." Then when you tap the "testimony" tag in your Study Notebook, you can see all the passages. In short, tagging helps you organize your highlights into related groups.
Links are cross-references. When you add a link to a passage, you connect it with another passage to remind yourself that there's a relationship between the two. For example, you might link a verse in 3 Nephi with a
verse in the New Testament if you find some connection between the two verses
Improved Related Content Area for Viewing Footnotes and Annota- tions When you read content in your library, your annotations appear in a Related Content window, integrated with the official footnotes for the content. The Related Content window now integrates all the notes, links, tags, footnotes, and other information into the same window. (See Figure 3.)

Figure 3. Related Content window
On tablets, the Related Content window appears to the right of your content. On mobile devices, the Related Content window appears below the content.
The Related Content window has various icons to denote the type of annotations:
To open the Related Content window, open some content in your library, and then tap theMenu button and tap Related Content. See "View Your Annotations in Context" on page 23 for more information.
Translation in Many New Languages The Gospel Library interface has been translation into numerous languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Fijian, Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Swedish, Ukrainian, Cebuano, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Samoan, Tagalog, and Tongan.
If your Android device's operating system loads in one of these languages, Gospel Library will automatically load that language for its interface. (Some additional languages also have partial interface translations.)
In addition to these interface languages, you can download library content in more than 40 languages.
Other Updates and Bug Fixes In addition the previously mentioned features, version 2.3 includes numerous bug fixes and minor updates, including:
l Improved catalog updates
l Improved content updates
l Improved indexing process
l Miscellaneous bug fixes

Open Multiple Windows You can open multiple Gospel Library windows to switch between views. For example, if you want to flip back and forth between several books of scriptures, or multiple conference talks, you can do this by having multiple windows open.
The multiple windows are large thumbnail versions of windows. You can view only one window at a time (as shown in the following screenshot).
1. Tap theMultiple Windows button .
2. Tap the Plus button to open another instance of Gospel Library. (See Figure 5.)

Note: You cannot enter a side- by-side reading mode, for example, to read 2 Nephi and Isaiah verses simultaneously with synchronized scrolling. Each window is a thumbnail only.
Listen or Watch Media If the content has audio or video available, the play button will be active. (See Figure 6.)
Figure 6. Play button
Recent general conference addresses usually have both audio and video. Scriptures and some lesson material
also have audio. The media are streamed, so you need a wifi connec- tion to listen or watch the media.
View Related Content You can view your notes, tags, links, and any official footnotes for the content by opening the Related Content window. Tap theMenu button and then tap Show Related Content. (See Figure 7.)

Long-Press Versus Tap Normally you navigate the app by tapping buttons and menu options. Occasionally you can also long-press the screen for more options. To long- press, tap and hold down for a second. You can long-press the screen when making annotations and when downloading content from a library folder.
Syncing with LDS.org Gospel Library for Android
Page 13
Syncing with LDS.org Annotations you make to content in Gospel Library sync with the Notes and Journal feature on LDS.org. In fact, if you have multiple devices, such as an iPhone using Gospel Library iOS, a Kindle Fire using Gospel Library Android, and a PC where you use LDS.org's Notes and Journal, your annotations sync across all of the devices as long as you're signed in to each of them with your LDS Account.
Create an LDS Account An LDS Account provides you with a single-sign-on to log into any Church website. For example, you sign in to LDS.org using your LDS Account. If you don't already have an LDS Account, you can create one by doing the following:
1. Tap theMenu button .
3. Expand the Sync Annotations section.
4. Tap Create an LDS Account.
5. Tap Register for an LDS Account and follow the on- screen process to create an LDS Account.
Alternatively, if you're online at a desktop or laptop, go https://ld- saccount.lds.org.
Sign In With Your LDS Account Gospel Library prompts you to sign in if you haven't already. Once you're signed in, you shouldn't have to sign in again unless you update the app, or unless you sign out. If the app doesn't prompt you to sign in to your LDS Account, do the following:
1. Tap theMenu button .
4. Type your LDS Account username and password.
5. Tap Sign In.
Page 14
When you are signed in with your LDS Account, a "Verified" note appears in the upper-left of the Sync annotations dialog window. (See Figure 10.)
Figure 10. Sync annotations
Force an Annotation Sync Your annotations sync almost instantly to LDS.org. When you navigate to another screen in the app, your naviga- tion triggers a sync of any existing annotations. If you're not seeing your annotations, you can force the app to sync.
1. Tap theMenu button .
2. Tap Sync Annotations.
What Syncs and What Doesn't Almost every annotation you make in the app syncs with LDS.org. However, any notebooks that you created on LDS.org's Notes and Journal do not sync down to Gospel Library. Notebooks are not yet a feature in the Gospel Library app.
The Notebook feature on LDS.org is actually still in development. In the Gospel Library iOS app, there's a related featured called "Documents" that is similar to Notebooks, but Documents and Notebooks do not sync.
A future release of Gospel Library for Android will probably include a Documents feature similar to the iOS version of the app. An upcoming version of Notes and Journal will establish a better harmony with the mobile Gospel Library apps.
Downloading Library Content Gospel Library for Android
Page 15
Downloading Library Content When you first download the Gospel Library app, the library is blank. If the library were fully loaded on the initial download, the content would consume a lot of space on your device, as well as clutter your library with content you may not want. You can choose what items you want to download based on your study interests.
What Library Content Is Available The following types of content are available to download through from the app:
l Scriptures. Includes the standard works and Study Helps (Topical Guide, Bible Dictionary, Index, and so on).
l General Conference. Includes general conference addresses dating back to 1971. The more recent general conference addresses include both audio and video recorded from general conference.
l Magazines. Includes the Ensign, Friend, Liahona, and New Era dating back to 1971.
l Manuals. Includes manuals for all organizations and groups.
Also includes seminary and institute manuals.
l Music. Includes both the standard hymns and the Children's Songbook.
l Other. Includes several categories — children, home and family, leadership, and youth. The content includes scriptures stories, Faith in God, the Family Proclamation, Family Home Evening Resource Book, Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Gospel Fundamentals, and more.
Download Individual Content 1. Tap the App Home button
to go to the Gospel Library home.
2. Tap the content you want to download. (See Figure 11.)

Content not downloaded yet appears in gray.
Download Content in a Specific Folder Only Rather than downloading everything in the library, you can download all content in a specific folder only.
1. Tap the App Home button to go to the Gospel Library home.
2. Tap theMenu button .
3. Long-press the category of content you want to download,
and then select Download All. (See Figure 12.)
Figure 12. Long-press to download
You can also navigate to a more granular folder, such as Magazines > Ensign and long-press 2012 (tap and hold for a second) to download all 2012 Ensign magazines.
Download Everything in the Library at Once If you want to download everything in the Gospel library at once — scriptures, general conference, magazines, manuals, music, and other — follow the steps below.
Downloading Library Content Gospel Library for Android
Page 17
1. Tap the App Home button to go to the Gospel Library home.
2. Tap theMenu button .
4. Tap Download All.
The content downloads silently in the background. You can monitor the download progress by tappingMenu
and then tapping View Background Tasks.
If your wifi connection fails intermit- tently during the download, some content may not download. You are not warned when downloading fails.
Note: If you're on a cellular network and are charged per byte you download, downloading all library content might not be a wise option. Go to your device's Settings and connect to a wifi network first.
Remove All Content You can remove all downloaded content at once. For example, if you're having trouble with certain books, or if you downloaded all the content and now you want to remove it all in one tap to free up space, you can. Removing the library content will not remove your notes — as long as you have signed in to the app so the sync to LDS.org can occur.
1. Make sure your existing annota- tions have been synced to LDS.org. Tap theMenu button , tap Settings, and expand
the Sync Annotations section. Verify that you're signed in. If you're not signed in, sign in so that your annotations can sync.
2. Tap the Back button and then tap the App Home button
to navigate back to the Gospel Library home.
3. TapManage Content.
4. Tap Remove All.
Refresh Content If the page you're viewing has updates to the content, you'll see an Update button in the top toolbar. This means that some content on the page has an update.
1. Tap the Update button .
2. Tap the Update option listed in the menu.
3. Tap the Update button and select to update the items as prompted.
Refresh Your Catalog The catalog lists everything available in Gospel Library. Your catalog should refresh automatically if any new content has been added, but you can also force a refresh in case you aren't seeing content that should

Page 18
2. Tap Refresh Catalog.
View the Progress of Your Downloads When you choose to download a large amount of content, the download processes quietly in the background so you can continue working in the app. It may take a while to complete the download.
While content is downloading, you can check the progress of the downloads.
1. Tap theMenu button .
A window appears showing what is downloading. (See Figure 13.)
Figure 13. Download progress
Not only does the content need to be downloaded, it also needs to be indexed for the search. Indexing strips the underlying code from the search so your results focus on the content rather than the code.
Annotating Content Gospel Library for Android
Page 19
Annotating Content You can annotate (or mark up) the content you read on Gospel Library in a variety of ways. You can highlight a passage, add a note, tag the passage, and link to another passage. Each of these actions is considered a type of annotation. Your annotations sync with LDS.org.
Annotate Content 1. Long-press (hold down for a
second) the content you want to highlight. The word you pressed is highlighted and surrounded by two handles .
2. Drag the handles around the content you want to highlight. (Tip: Drag with the bottom of the handle rather than the middle.)
3. Tap the buttons in the bottom toolbar to do any of the following:
Change the highlight color. Choose from among five highlight colors and underlining.
Add a note. Type as many insights and thoughts as you want.
Add a tag. Tags are keywords that you add to content that you want to group by that keyword.
Add a link. Cross-reference a verse or paragraph with another verse or paragraph in Gospel Library. Links help you identify patterns, themes, and other connections between gospel content.
Copy the content to your device's clipboard. Paste the content somewhere else, such as in a notepad app on your device. To paste the content, long-press a document and tap Paste.
Delete the annotation. Remove unwanted annotations from your app.
Edit Annotations on Gospel Library
1. Browse to the content you annotated.
2. Tap the color square to the right of the annotated passage. (See Figure 14.)

Figure 14. Color square
Handles appear around the highlight, and the active color square darkens. Any notes, links, or tags appear in a Related Content window.
3. To edit any notes, tags, links, or highlight colors, tap the appropriate button on the bottom toolbar as if you were adding another note, tag, link, or highlight. (See Figure 15.) A window will appear with the existing annotation, which you can then update.
Figure 15. Annotation buttons
For example, to edit a note, tap theNote button and you will see the note to edit.
4. To delete the highlight, tap the Trash button .
Delete Annotations You may inadvertently annotate a word you don't mean to annotate by accidentally long-pressing any part of the screen.

5. Tap the X button next to the link you want to remove.
Edit or Delete Annotations on LDS.org Because all of your annotations sync with LDS.org, you can also edit your annotations online.
1. Go to LDS.org and select Sign In/Tools > Notes and Journal.

3. Click Edit. (See Figure 18.)
Figure 18. Edit button
4. As desired, add tags, type notes, and select notebooks for the highlight. (See Figure 19.)
Figure 19. Tags, notes, notebooks
5. To delete the annotation, click Delete.
Notebooks are an LDS.org feature only and are not yet integrated into the
Gospel Library app. To add a notebook on LDS.org, in the Notes and Journal sidebar, tap +Add next to Notebooks. The notebook will then be available when you edit your annotation. However, because notebooks are not in the app, you will not see these notebooks sync down.
Annotation Order Annotations appear in chronological order by edit date, not by the date you originally made the annotation.
Tips for Dragging the Handles If you find the handles difficult to drag, try these tips:
l Tap theMenu button and then tap Settings. Select the Alternate highlightmode check box.
l Drag the handles at the bottom rather than the middle or top.
l Rotate your device to another orientation.
l If you want to highlight the entire passage rather than selecting a word in the middle of the passage, select the last word. Then drag the first handle to the first word in the verse. This way you only have to drag one handle to highlight an entire verse rather than dragging two handles.
Viewing Annotations Gospel Library for Android
Page 23
Viewing Annotations As you annotate passages, you can view your annotations in several different ways: in a list view, in context of the page you annotated, and on LDS.org.
View Annotations in List Format (Study Notebook) 1. Tap the App Home button to
go to the Gospel Library Home.
2. Tap Study Notebook.
3. Tap the type of annotation you want to view: Highlights, Links, Notes, Tags, or Journal Entries.
4. Tap the annotation to go to the passage you annotated.
All your annotations appear in a consol- idated list according to the type of annotation you selected. The most recently edited annotations appear at the top.
View Your Annotations in Context As you're reading content that you've already annotated, you may want to see your notes, tags, and links in context as you read (rather than in a consolidated list in the Study Notebook).
1. Browse to a page where you made some annotations. (You can tap some of the annota- tions that appear in Study Notebook to see the annotation in context.)
2. Tap theMenu button and then tap Show Related Content. (See Figure 20.)
Figure 20. Show Related Content
The Related Content window appears below the text, showing your notes, tags, and links mixed in with the official footnotes for the content. The Related Content window scrolls in sync with the passages shown on the screen.

3. Tap the color square to the right of a passage to highlight any annotations you added corresponding to that highlight. (See Figure 21.)
Figure 21. Color square.
In the Related Content window, the rounded blue button next to the annotation indicates the type of annotation:
Link
Note
Tag
The number in the rounded blue rectangle indicates the verse the annotation relates to.
For content that doesn't have verses, such as conference addresses, the paragraph number is referenced instead. Gospel Library considers the page title, article title, byline, and summary as paragraphs.
For tags, you can tap the tag name to see other content marked with the same tag.
When you tap a link, you're taken to the linked passage.
View Annotations on LDS.org 1. Go to LDS.org and select Sign In/Tools > Notes and Journal.
2. By default, All Items is selected. Your highlights appear here in chronological order by date edited.
3. To filter the list of All Items to show only highlights, under Types, selectHighlights.
LDS.org groups both highlights and notes in the same filter: "Highlights." You can't filter by Notes only, as you can do in the app.
Links you make in the app are synced to LDS.org, but you cannot add a link
Viewing Annotations Gospel Library for Android

from LDS.org. You can only create links from the app.
Adding Bookmarks Gospel Library for Android
Page 26
Adding Bookmarks As you study the gospel on your device, you can add a bookmark to remind yourself where you left off reading.
Bookmarks are more like place markers and aren't intended as a way of collecting your favorite links or articles — that's what tags are for.
Add a New Bookmark 1. Browse to the place you want to
add a bookmark.
Figure 22. Bookmark button
Go to a Bookmark 1. Tap the Bookmark button .
2. Tap the bookmark you want to jump to.
Replace an Existing Bookmark 1. Tap the Bookmark button

.
2. Tap the arrow to the right of the bookmark you want to replace. (See Figure 23.)
Figure 23. Bookmark arrow
3. Tap Update.
View Your Bookmarks on LDS.org As with highlights, bookmarks you add in Gospel Library sync to LDS.org and vice versa.
1. Go to LDS.org and select Sign In/Tools > Notes and Journal.
2. In the sidebar, under Types, click Bookmarks.
3. Click the blue link to go to the bookmark.
Note: Unlike the Gospel Library app, LDS.org doesn't have a feature to replace an existing bookmark. You simply add a new bookmark and delete any old bookmarks. Because the sync between LDS.org and Gospel Library is bidirectional, bookmarks you add on LDS.org sync to your Gospel Library app's bookmark menu, and vice versa.
Group Your Favorite Articles If you want to collect a group of favorite articles (for example, you may want to group your favorite addresses from the most recent general conference), bookmarks aren't the best solution. Your bookmarks expand in a drop-down list in the app, so after adding about a dozen bookmarks, your list will become unwieldy.
Instead, if you want to group your favorite general conference talks, add a tag to the article, such as "Oct Gen Conf 2012."
Adding Bookmarks Gospel Library for Android
Page 28
2. Drag the handles around the title.
3. Tap the tag button .
4. Add a descriptive word for the tag, and then tap the check mark.
You can find your tagged articles in the app's Tags section or in the Gospel Library's Tags section in LDS.org's Notes and Journal.
Writing Journal Entries Gospel Library for Android
Page 29
Writing Journal Entries You might want to write a journal entry to record inspirations, thoughts, and other ideas while reading the scriptures. Journal entries differ from notes in that they stand apart from any specific library content. While notes are always attached to a specific highlight, journal entries are indepen- dent of any other library content.
Journal entries you create in Gospel Library sync to the journal entries on LDS.org, and vice versa.
Write a Journal Entry 1. Tap the App Home button .
2. Tap Study Notebook.
3. Tap Journal Entries.
4. Tap the Journal Entry button on the top toolbar. (See Figure 24.)
Figure 24. Journal Entry button
5. Type your journal entry, and then tap the check mark .
Delete a Journal Entry 1. Tap the App Home button .
2. Tap Study Notebook.
3. Tap Journal Entries.
4. Long-press a journal entry, and then tap the Trash button.
Journal Entry Order In your Study Notebook, the most recently edited journal entries appear
Writing Journal Entries Gospel Library for Android
Page 30
on top. If you wrote five journal entries over the course of a month, and decided to update your original entry today, that original entry would appear at the top of the journal entry list. There are no time stamps with journal entries apart from the edit date.
Should I Migrate All My Journals Online? Some people have wondered whether they should import all of their journal entries into Notes and Journal so they can easily reference them online or in the app. Currently this practice is not recommended. The journal entry feature is too primitive to act as a full- featured diary. You can't format text with bold, italics, or underlining, and neither can you time-stamp entries to be a certain date.
Journal Entries in the App versus LDS.org and iOS There are some slight differences between journal entries in the app versus journal entries on LDS.org. On LDS.org, you can add tags to your journal entries. A journal entry that has a tag will also appear in the Tags section on LDS.org.
However, the Gospel Library app does not yet allow tags with journal entries, so you cannot add a tag to a journal entry. Additionally, journal entries that you tagged on LDS.org do not appear in the Tags section of the app.
In the Gospel Library iOS app, journal entries are called "notes." You can create notes only inside Documents. Any Document notes you create on an iOS device will sync as journal entries on LDS.org or as journal entries on an Android device.
Searching Library Content and Annotations Gospel Library for Android
Page 31
Searching Library Content and Annotations You can search for content in your library and annotations. The annota- tions are included in the library search. However, you can also search just your annotations. When you search annota- tions, you can filter the search dynami- cally based on keywords you enter.
Search the Entire Library 1. Tap the Search button .
2. Type a keyword. (Phrases are handled more as individual keywords rather than phrases.) (See Figure 25.) Figure 25. Search
3. Tap Go (or tap the Search button again).
The app doesn't search the content in your library directly but rather searches an index of the content. The index strips the HTML from the content so the search results won't return style names and code but rather content only. Indexing also speeds up the search.
Search Only Your Annota- tions 1. Tap the App Home button .
2. Tap Study Notebook.
Page 32
3. Tap one of your Study Notebook folders, such as All.
4. Tap the Search button .
5. Tap Search These Annotations. (See Figure 26.)
Figure 26. Search These Annotations
6. In the Search field, start typing a keyword that you want to filter the annotations by. The search results dynamically update to match the keyword you type.
About the Search Algorithm The app's search algorithm looks at
basic keyword matches in the indexed content. Here a few things to keep in mind with the search:
l Scope of search. The search scans only your annotations and library content that you have downloaded. If you have not downloaded any magazines, for example, the search will not show results from magazines.
l Advanced parameters. The search does not accept quotation marks, BOOLEAN operators, plus or minus signs, wildcards, or other advanced search parameters.
l Phrases. Phrases are treated more like individual keywords than phrases. For example, "love at home" doesn't necessarily find the phrase love at home but rather passages with frequent instances of the words "love" and "home.".
l Search results order. The search results show the most recent content first (for example, 2012 rather than 2011 conference addresses), and are then sorted by order of month. This order reflects the same content order within your library content. In short, date trumps keyword frequency in determining relevant search results.
l Stop words. Stop words (small articles and prepositions) are excluded from the search
Searching Library Content and Annotations Gospel Library for Android
Page 33
results. For example, a, an, and, are, as, at, but, by, for, if, in, and so on are excluded.
l Partial matches. The results include partial matches. A search for "equality" will return results containing the word "equal." A search for "beauty" includes results containing the word "beautiful."
Note: The search will be enhanced in future releases.
"Indexing Not Yet Completed" If you recently downloaded library content or made new annotations, you may see the following message when you perform a search: "Not all of your downloaded content has been indexed. You may see some missing results until indexing has been completed."
The indexing process takes place automatically in the background as soon as you download content or sync your annotations. However, it takes a while for the app to complete the indexing. Until the indexing is complete, your search results will not be comprehensive.
Viewing Other Languages Gospel Library for Android
Page 34
Viewing Other Languages You can view other languages in Gospel Library in two different ways:
l You can download Gospel Library content in other languages.
l You can switch the interface to another language.
You may want to download content in another language if, for example, you served a mission in a South American country and want to keep up your Spanish skills by occasionally studying the gospel in Spanish. Or if you speak multiple languages and want to compare the translations of similar verses in various languages, you may want to download library content in other languages.
On the other hand, if Spanish is your native language and you want to navigate a Spanish interface directly, then you'll probably not only want to download Spanish library content, you'll want to switch the interface language to Spanish.
Download Library Content in Other Languages 1. Tap the App Home button .
2. Tap theMenu button .
3. Tap Select Language, and then select the language you want to download.
The Library Content refreshes with content available in that language. Currently there is content in more than 40 different languages to choose from. Not all languages have the same amount of library content to download.
Switch the Interface to Another Language Gospel Library's interface is translated into a number of different languages. The default language that loads in Gospel Library depends on your Android device's settings. If your Android devices is set to Spanish, Gospel Library's interface and library content will automatically load in Spanish. If you want the user interface to appear in another language, you will need to load your Android operating system in that language.
Currently Gospel Library's interface is translated into the following languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Fijian, Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Swedish, Ukrainian, Cebuano, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Samoan, Tagalog, and Tongan.
Some other languages (not listed above) have partially translated user interfaces.
Configuring Settings Gospel Library for Android
Page 35
Configuring Settings You can configure various Gospel Library settings by tapping theMenu button and selecting Settings. The following sections explain the options in Settings.
Sync annotations Signing in to LDS Account is necessary for your annotations to sync with LDS.org and instances of Gospel Library on other devices. To learn more about annotation sync, see "Syncing with LDS.org" on page 13.
Allowmobile network use Downloading library content and viewing audio/video streams for content can consume a lot of data. If you're using your mobile network to connect online, the increased data use during the downloads could result in additional fees from your mobile carrier. If you want to avoid using your mobile network and thus prevent any potential fees from excessive data use, don't select this option.
Reading Options You can configure various reading options, such as font size, brightness, view orientation, night mode, justified text, and the typeface from this section. These settings apply to the content you
read, not to the user interface text.
Font size. You can change the font size of the content you read. This can be especially helpful if you prefer larger text. By adjusting the font size, you can create a large-print experience, or if you have sharp eyesight, shrink the font extra small. Play around with the font size until you find a setting that is comfortable to you.
Brightness. The brightness setting will overwrite any brightness settings you have set on your device as you're reading content. This allows you to set a specific brightness for reading content that may differ from the brightness settings you prefer in other apps. For example, if you always read your scriptures at night and don't want to bother your sleeping spouse, you might want the brightness to automatically be more dim. You can set that here.
Note: The brightness setting only kicks in when you start reading library content, not when you navigate the library titles. The switch from regular brightness to a specific bright- ness setting is by design.
View Orientation. If you prefer to curl up on the couch or bed and read holding your device a certain way, such as in landscape mode, but prefer to keep the orientation in portrait mode, you can lock the orientation here.
Configuring Settings Gospel Library for Android
Page 36
Night mode. Night mode inverts the color of the text so that the background is black and the text is white. You might find this mode more relaxing on the eyes.
Use Serif Typeface. Serif typefaces have little wings at the edges of font letters. Some people prefer to read content that has this typeface, as it makes it easier to read. By removing this check box, the default font becomes sans-serif (without wings).
Alternate highlight mode Select this option if you're having trouble making highlights. This check box incorporates a different highlighting mechanism that might be more compatible with your device.
Don't dim screen By default, to save battery power, your device usually dims after a few minutes of inactivity. If you select the "Don't dim screen" check box, your screen will not dim even due to inactivity. You may want to select this option if you aren't regularly interacting with your device during your gospel study. For example, you may be taking notes while reading and hence not touching any buttons, or you may be referencing other texts and therefore spend a lot of time on just a few verses.
Automatic tilt scroll For devices that allow tilt-scrolling, you
can select this option here. Basically, this feature allows you to scroll the content by tilting your device. However, tilting the device makes it harder to read the text (since your device is half-inverted). There isn't an automatic scroll option that doesn't involve tilting your device to start the scroll. (The Kindle Fire does not support tilt scrolling.) The tilt scroll is still a feature in development.
Enable indexing Gospel Library creates an index from all the content you've downloaded. When you search for a keyword, your search scans this index instead of the actual content. The index removes the underlying code so your keyword matches scan the content rather than the underlying code. There's no reason to turn indexing off unless you're experiencing issues with search, or if your app keeps crashing. If you disable indexing, you will not be able to search your content.
Delete all indexing data If you're having trouble with the search, your indexing data may be corrupt. Try deleting all the indexing data so the app can reindex the content.
Delete all content data If you try to access library content and see database corruption messages, delete all your content

Differences Between LDS.org and the Gospel Library App

Page 38
Differences Between LDS.org and the Gospel Library App The Notes and Journal feature on LDS.org (Figure 27) was created before the Gospel Library apps (Figure 28). Some functionality seemed more appropriate to the desktop experience, and other functionality more appropriate to the mobile experience. Hence you will notice some differences if you study the gospel on LDS.org as well as on your app.
Figure 27. The Notes and Journal feature on LDS.org.
Figure 28. The Study Notebook feature in the Gospel Library app.
Here are some of the differences between LDS.org's Notes and Journal tool and the Gospel Library Android app:
Journal entries On LDS.org, you can tag journal entries. Tagged journal entries appear in your Tags list. In the app, you can't tag journal entries. Any journal entries you tag on LDS.org do not appear in the Tags section of the app.
Links On LDS.org, you can't add links (cross
Differences Between LDS.org and the Gospel Library App

references from one passage to another). You can add links only in the app. However, links you add from the app do appear in the sidebar on LDS.org.
Product names In the app, the term "Study Notebook" is used. This was the previous name of Notes and Journal. On LDS.org, the term "Notes and Journal" is used except in the black footer toolbar, where you still see references to the previous name.
Notebooks On LDS.org, you can create notebooks to organize your annotations. You cannot create notebooks in the app. (However, notebooks function almost identically to tags, so these two features overlap in a somewhat confusing way on LDS.org.)
Bookmarks On LDS.org, you can bookmark an entire chapter and sort your bookmarks. In the app, bookmarks are mainly used as placemarkers for where you left off reading.
Highlights
In the app, you can highlight an article title or byline and tag it. On LDS.org, you can highlight and tag only the body content.
Display of Notes On LDS.org, your notes appear when you hover over a highlight. In the app, your notes appear in a Related Content window.
Highlights and Notes LDS.org groups both highlights and notes in the same filter: "Highlights." You can't filter by Notes only, as you can do in the app. Links you make in the app are synced to LDS.org, but you cannot add a link from LDS.org. You can only create links from the app.
Note: Notes and Journal will undergo a significant revision in 2013 that will probably align it more closely with the Gospel Library apps.
Troubleshooting Gospel Library for Android
Page 40
Troubleshooting Annotations Not Syncing Correctly If you are experiencing trouble with your annotations syncing, you can force a re-sync of all your annotations.
1. Tap theMenu button .
4. Tap Re-Sync All.
1. Tap theMenu button .
2. Tap Settings.
3. Select the Alternate highlight mode check box. This check box incorporates a different highlighting mechanism that might be more compatible with your device.
Corrupt Database If you receive error messages about a corrupt database, do the following:
1. Tap theMenu button .
4. Tap Yes to confirm.
Search Not Working If for some reason the search isn't functioning as you expect:
1. Tap theMenu button .
4. Tap Yes to confirm.
App Database Cannot Be Opened You see this error message if there is a problem with your SD card, which is where the app database is located. If your SD card is corrupt, the app will not open. To resolve this issue, try the following:
1. Turn off your device and turn it back on again.
2. Unmount and remount your SD card. On your Android device, go to Settings > Storage or SD Card >Unmount SD Card.
3. Remove your SD card from your device and insert it again.
Troubleshooting Gospel Library for Android
Page 41
If none of these steps fixes the problem, you may have corruption on your SD card that is preventing the app proper access to the database. You can test this by replacing the card with a different SD card and opening the app again. You can also try to reformat the SD card, but reformatting may not fix a damaged card.
Indexing Not Yet Completed If you see a message about "indexing not yet completed" when you try to search for content, see ""Indexing Not Yet Completed"" on page 33.
Support Options Gospel Library for Android
Page 42
Support Options Submit a Bug Report You can submit a bug report directly in the app. When you submit the report, information about your device and your recent log is included in the bug submission.
1. Tap theMenu button .
Figure 29. Report a Problem
Because the bug submission sends an e-mail message, you must have your e-mail client configured on your device before you can send a bug report. If you don't have your e-mail client configured, when you try to submit a bug report, you will see a message that says, "No applications can perform this action."
Engineers look at bugs submitted and respond as soon as they can.
LDSTech Forum If you are experiencing an issue with Gospel Library, try searching on the LDSTech Forum at https://tech.lds.org/forum, specifically the Gospel Library category, to see if others have already reported the issue.
You can also post questions to the LDSTech Forum. The Forum consists of many volunteers and employees who interact on technology topics related to Church tools, applications, sites, and services.
Live Support There isn't a service desk number to call for help with the Gospel Library app. You are encouraged to submit a bug report, which will reach engineers more quickly than other routes, or to use the LDSTech Forum.
If you need basic help, contact your ward or stake technology specialist,

or someone else with an Android device who might provide guidance.
Glossary Gospel Library for Android
Page 44
Glossary A
Android The operating system on your mobile device. Contrasts with iOS, which is the operating system on an Apple mobile device. You must have at least Android 2.2 or later to run Gospel Library for Android. (Currently, the Android oper- ating system is on version 4.2.) If you have an older device, you can still run Gospel Library on Android, but you will need to download an older version of the app. See http://ld- smobiletester.com/android for older ver- sions.
Annotation Refers to any kind of mark-up you do with the content, such as adding high- lights, notes, links, tags, or journal entries. All of these actions are different kinds of annotation.
Annotation sync Your annotations sync with LDS.org -- as long as you're signed in to LDS.org in the app. To sign in, go to Menu > Settings and expand the Sync Annotations sec- tion. As long as you're signed in to LDS.org sync, you can go to LDS.og and click Sign in/Tools > Notes and Journal and see all the annotations you made from the Gospel Library app. Likewise, you can use any other Gospel Library app, either on other Android or iOS devices, and see your annotations, because they have synced to your profile through your LDS Account login.Your annotations are really in the cloud (online) rather than only local to a spe- cific device.
B
Bookmarks Refers to a placeholder you add to remember where you stopped reading. Bookmarks are not intended as a way to compile your favorite links, such as how you might use a social book- maring tool (such as Deliciousl). That usage is more similar to the LDS.org Notes and Journal implementation of bookmarks. On the app, bookmarks are intended as placeholders, and you nor- mally don't use more than a dozen bookmarks.
C
Catalog The folders available in the library, which include Scriptures, General, Con- ference, Magazines, Manuals, Music, and Other. Although you can refresh the catalog from the Menu, the catalog refreshes automatically when new con- tent is available.
Cross-references The same as "links." A cross-reference refers to another passage, connecting the two passages together (usually because of some thematic similarity). Links help you identify patterns, themes, and other connections between gospel content.
D
Documents A feature unique to the iOS Gospel Library app only. A document is a blank page that you can send annotations to, such as if you're preparing a lesson or talk and want to compile some
Glossary Gospel Library for Android
Page 45
annotations for easy reference. If you're switching between an iOS and Android device, know that any journal entries you create on an Android device do sync to iOS devices, but they appear as notes in a document.Conversely, if you create notes in a document on an iOS device, they appear as journal entries on an Android device.
E
EPUB An eReader format for tablets. eReader formats arrange content in a reader- friendly display that lets you swipe to flip from one page to the next. You can download the scriptures in EPUB format on LDS.org. Go to LDS.org and click Scrip- tures > Formats and Downloads. Click the Download link in the right column and look for the EPUB format. If you have a Kindle Fire, you must use the MOBI for- mat rather than the EPUB format.
F
Footnotes Official notes in the scriptures and other gospel content. Footnotes are anno- tations from official Church sources. You can't edit footnotes. Both these official footnotes and your own annotations appear mixed together in the Related Con- tent window (Menu > Related Content) when you're reading content on the Gos- pel Library app.
G
Gestures Ways to interact with the touch screen on mobile devices. Common gestures include single swipes, two-finger swipes,
long-presses, pinches, squeezes, rota- tions, and more. Gospel Library app does not have any advanced gestures. You can only tap, swipe, and occa- sionally long-press the screen.
H
Handles Refers to the column-like graphics that appear when you long-press (tap and hold for a second) a passage. The han- dles appear around the word you long- pressed. For best results, drag the han- dles from the bottom.
Highlight A color overlay that appears over a word you long-press. (Drag the handles to expand the scope of the highlight.) You can choose from five different col- ors and underlining. In the Gospel Library app, highlights and notes are considered separate annotations, whereas on LDS.org's Notes and Jour- nal, the Highlights category includes both highlights and notes in the same view.
I
Indexing A technical process the Gospel Library app performs to strip out the underling code from library content so the search looks for keywords in the content rather than the code. Your content must be indexed before it becomes searchable. You can't initiate the index- ing yourself -- the app automatically does it. Earlier versions of Gospel Library had some issues with indexing, and the app sometimes crashed because of it. As a result, in the Set- tings, you can turn off indexing. You
Glossary Gospel Library for Android
Page 46
don't need to turn off indexing unless you're experiencing issues with your app. If you turn off indexing, you won't be able to use the search feature.
iOS The name for Apple's mobile operating system. Occasionally the help material refers to some differences between the Android and iOS versions of the Gospel Library app.
J
Journal entries Journal entries are similar to a diary entry or standalone note. You might want to write a journal entry to record inspi- rations, thoughts, and other ideas while reading the scriptures and other library content. Journal entries differ from notes in that they stand apart from any specific library content. While notes are always attached to a specific highlight, journal entries are independent of any other library content.
L
LDS.org In the help material, when referring to LDS.org, what is usually meant is the Notes and Journal feature on LDS.org. You can view this Notes and Journal sec- tion by going to LDS.org and clicking Sign in/Tools > Notes and Journal. The Study Notebook feature in the Gospel Library app mirrors the Notes and Journal feature on LDS.org, more or less. LDS.org's Notes and Journal used to be called My Study Notebook, but in an attempt to simplify the tool names, the term "Notes and Journal" was adopted. At a future point, these terms will be
aligned between the LDS.org tools and the Gospel Library apps.
Library The catalog of content available to download in Gospel Library. When you install Gospel Library, the library is ini- tially empty. Downloading all the Gos- pel Library content can occupy quite a bit of space on your device, depending on how much space you have avail- able. If you have space constraints, you may want to download only a portion of the gospel content. Or if you want to keep the list of library content simple to avoid clutter, you may want to down- load only a portion of the library con- tent. You can download all content at once as well as remove all content at once. Long press a folder to download all content for that folder only.
Links Cross-references to another passage of content. A cross-reference refers to another passage, connecting the two passages together (usually because of some thematic similarity). Links help you identify patterns, themes, and other connections between gospel con- tent.
Long-press When you tap and hold for a second, this is called a long-press. (Or long- tap.) You long-press a passage to add an annotation to the passage. You also long-press a folder in your library to download all content for that folder.
M
Marks The term the iOS Gospel Library app uses for highlight. This term was partly
Glossary Gospel Library for Android
Page 47
chosen for its brevity (to fit on the anno- tation bar).
MOBI An eReader format for some tablets, such as Kindle Fire. eReader formats arrange content in a reader-friendly format that lets you swipe to flip from one page to the next. You can download the scrip- tures in MOBI format on LDS.org. On LDS.org, click Scriptures > Formats and Downloads. Click the Download link in the right column and look for the MOBI format.
N
Notebooks Organizing folders in the Notes and Jour- nal feature on LDS.org. Notebooks func- tion similar to tags, in that they provide containers to group content. Notebooks are an LDS.org feature only and are not yet integrated into the Gospel Library app. To add a notebook on LDS.org, in the Notes and Journal sidebar, tap +Add next to Notebooks. The notebook will then be available when you edit your annotation. However, because note- books are not in the app, you will not see these notebooks sync down.
Notes A type of annotation that includes add- ing your own thoughts on a passage of content. When you annotate content, in addition to highlighting the passage, you can also add a note to the passage. Notes is a folder you can select in the Study Notebook view of Gospel Library app. On LDS.org, the "Highlights" category includes notes too (they aren't separated out in a granular way like they are in the app).
Notes and Journal The new name of the My Study Note- book feature on LDS.org. You get to Notes and Journal by going to LDS.org and clicking Sign In/Tools > Notes and Journal. Notes and Journal is the online parallel to the Gospel Library app. Your annotations bidirectionally sync between these two tools (LDS.org Notes and Journal and the Gospel Library app). For help specific to Notes and Journal, see https://ue.ldschurch.org/- ldsapphelp/notesandjournal.
R
Related Content A window that shows both your anno- tations and any official footnotes for the content you're reading. This win- dow isn't shown by default. While you're reading content, tap Menu and then tap Related Content. In the Related Content window, your links, notes, and tags appear inside a blue rec- tangle with an icon representing the type of annotation. The number cor- responds to the verse or paragraph number of the article. (The title, byline, and summary are considered par- agraphs.)
S
SD Card The storage card for Android devices. The Gospel Library app is stored on your SD card, so if your card becomes corrupt, it will affect the app.
Study Notebook The consolidated view of all your anno- tations in the Gospel Library app. Your Study Notebook is similar to the Notes
Glossary Gospel Library for Android
Page 48
and Journal feature on LDS.org. (A future update to these tools will bring the terms more in harmony.) Your Study Notebook is considered part of the library of gospel content.
Swipe Tap and slide your finger left or right. When you're reading a chapter of scrip- tures or an article, swipe left or right to move from one chapter or article to the next.
Sync A sync makes the annotations the same across multiple devices and platforms. The annotations you make on the Gospel Library app sync with LDS.org and instances of Gospel Library on other plat- forms, such as iOS. Your annotations sync to the cloud so they are inde- pendent of any specific platform or device.
T
Tags Tags are keywords that you add to con- tent you want to group by that keyword. For example, if you want to group your favorite general conference talks, add a tag to the articles, such as "Oct Gen Conf 2012." This tag will appear in your Study Notebook. When you click the tag, you see all articles you added this tag to. (Tags work similar to tags on blogging sites such as WordPress.)
