Shirley Temple Black, who as a
dimpled, precocious and deter-
mined little girl in the 1930s
sang and tap-danced her way to
a height of Hollywood top and
worldwide fame that no other
child has reached, died on
Monday night at her home in
Woodside, California. She was
85.
Mrs. Black returned to the
spotlight in the 1960s in the
surprising new role of diplo-
mat, but in the popular imagi-
nation she would always be
America’s darling of the De-
pression years, when in 23 mo-
tion pictures her sparkling per-
sonality and sunny optimism
lifted spirits and made her fa-
mous. From 1935 to 1939 she
was the most popular movie
star in America.

Belzer’s Got Talent
By: Emory Bullock and Daphne Sanders.
American Idol is a singing competition
created by Simon Fuller. On February 18
of this year, Malaya Watson was chosen to
be in the top 10 girls. The judges said that
Malaya had an “outgoing personality,” and
has a “great voice.” Malaya was the last
girl to be chosen in the top. She sang “Hard
Times” by Ray Charles.
The judges said, “You
have a very strong
voice,” and they said she
has one of the best voices
in the competition. She
was really into the song.
“Hard Times” was her first song that she
listened to nonstop when she was
young. Ever since then, it’s been
her favorite song. Malaya has the
potential to be the next American
Idol superstar. Our very own
Marrialle Sellars sadly didn’t
make the top 13 artists, and will
be returning home soon.

By: Lilly Solly. Nowadays, you
hear everyone
talking about
new natural
healthy diets
and diet pills,
but are they
really good for
you? Nutri-
system,
Lipozene, and
Jenny Craig, are all supposedly
healthy and a good way to lose
weight. Why don’t people just
exercise to lose weight, or maybe
eat more fruits and vegetables to
get healthier? Many diet pills con-
tain harmful chemicals that may
burn fat, but they can also damage
your internal organs. Just because
the people on commercials say
they are all natural and healthy,
doesn’t mean they are actually
good. You may lose weight, but
you may also be doing serious
damage to your body.
If you really want to
lose weight, there are
healthier ways to do it!
Swap out cookies and
ice cream for a bowl of
fresh strawberries or an
orange. Try exercising,
you can start small and
work your way up.
Start by jogging for 20 minutes
then doing a few sit-ups and push-
ups. When you’re ready, start do-
ing more challenging workouts.
Or, you can even turn on some
music and dance around your
house for a while! Any physical
activity helps. Please take care of
yourself and don’t fall for un-
healthy products like diet pills.
There are better ways to stay
healthy! Get up, get active, and
get healthy!
Are Diet Pills Telling
The Truth?
By: Reagan Fitzsimmons. The 2014 Winter Olympics took
place in Sochi Russia. As many journalists and Olympians
arrived they have came to realize that there were many prob-
lems with the area, including undrinkable water, shower sur-
veillance, unfinished hotel rooms, etc. Russia’s deputy
Prime Minister, Dmitry Kozak, revealed that security camer-
as were being hidden in people’s showers. Soon after he said
this, he was pulled away by a co-worker, so no follow up
questions were able to be asked. A spokesman for Mr. Kozak
said “surveillance on premises during construction and
cleaning of Sochi's venues and hotels and that is likely what
Mr. Kozak was referencing.” There were many reports of
the water being a brown color. One reporter was told not to
wash their face with the tap water because it “contains some-
thing very dangerous”. Although Vladimir Putin spent 50
billion dollars on these Olympics, the most expensive ever,
things still seem to be going wrong. Only about 6 out of 9
hotels were finished on time; many rooms lacked sheets,
shower curtains, doorknobs, flooring, and more.

By: Gabriel Garcia. Flappy bird has
been a popular game but recently
the creator Dong Nguyen took the
game off the app store on February
8. Flappy bird is a game where you
touch the screen to make a bird fly
through some pipes that look like a
Mario brother’s game. It’s a very
addicting game, but the creator
tweeted that he was going to take it
off because he couldn’t take it any-
more. Flappy bird ruined his normal
life and it was supposed to be a
game you play for a
few minutes when
you relaxed, but it
got addicting.
So he took it off
even though he got
50,000 in ad reve-
nue he also said it
wasn’t anything
illegal. Because
some thought it was
copyright since it had pipes from a
Mario brother’s game. The creator
got a lot of hate mail and someone
even died over flappy bird. A boy
stabbed his brother because he beat
his high score in flappy bird. How-
ever, if you already downloaded it
you can keep it, but if you delete it
you will need to go to your cloud to
retrieve it. People interested in the
game are just out of luck. There are
still some parodies of the game you
can play.
R.I.P. Flappy Bird By: Abby Heneisen and
Brittney Bohlman. Is it
real or not? There is a
“Dumb Starbucks” in
Southern California. The
logo on the store front is
the exact same as the actu-
al Starbucks with the word
dumb inserted. The menu
is also the same with the
word dumb in front of
each item.
Even though they are
technically making fun of
the original Starbucks,
they still had a line
outside of curious
customers on Satur-
day and Sunday.
"We love Starbucks
and look up to them
as role models. Un-
fortunately, the only
way to use their intel-
lectual property under
fair use is if we are making
fun of them. So the 'dumb'
comes out of necessity, not
enmity," announced the
makers of “Dumb Star-
bucks.”
Late Monday afternoon,
the Los Angeles Health
Department shut down
Dumb Starbucks shortly
after they found out that
Nathan Fielder, comedian
of Comedy Central, was
behind the “Dumb Star-
bucks.”

Olivia’s Responses
No, violence in video games has nothing to do with vio-
lence in real life. In 2004 Dr. Cheryl Olson and a team of researchers found that violence began before the games not after. In a lot of cases killing and violence in games
can relieve stress and in a lot of cases let kids “get their anger out”. In addition the student’s view of “real vs. fake”, which if the student believes its real and that kill-
ing is ok outside of the game, could lead to violence, but these cases are
rare and are not caused by the game.
No, the ratings on video games are there for a
reason, to give a suggestion of the proper audience. Ratings are mostly just an easy guide for parents and
guardians to know the “contents” of the game. A lot of times the games are not properly scored, either being inap-
propriate for an age or perfectly fine. Anyway, the parents should take re-sponsibility, and set rules and precau-
tions, without involving the video
game makers or distributors.
Yes, video games do. Several students said they help to improve a certain skill or be-
havior. One of the main skills used in video games no matter really what console you are playing on, is hand-eye coordination. This is a very practical skill that gamers
tend to possess. Another good part is the stress relief. While playing violent games anger can be expressed without any harm outside of the game. Nearly all games
have a bit of strategy involved, giving the player critical thinking and problem solving skills. Other positive ef-
fects are also common; these are just some of the top
ones.
Lexi’ Reponses
Definitely! When young students are exposed to violent video
games, they start to think that the behavior they see in those
games are appropriate. Then, they begin to perform the inappro-
priate behavior. The 2008 study called “Grand Theft Child-
hood” reported that 60% of elementary and middle school boys
that played at least one Mature-rated game hit or beat up some-
one, compared to 39% of boys that did not play Mature-rated
games. Violent video games are very influ-
ential; they are causing violence in young
children!
Yes, because most people, including chil-
dren, just ignore the ratings that companies
provide and play them anyway. They think
that video games are overrated, and their
parents encourage playing the game! You
could find a 9 year-old playing an “M” rated
game, and the student exhibiting the behav-
ior learned in the video game! A 2010 FBI
report includes a list of behaviors associated
with school shootings linked with violent
video games.
Absolutely not! Violent video games have been blamed for
multiple school shootings, increased bully-like behavior, and
violence towards children and their elders. Many critics argue
that these games soothe players into violence, reward players
for exhibiting violence, and teach children that violence is a
good way to solve any and all conflicts. Violent video games
have caused young children to beat people up and think that it’s
okay! It’s not a good thing, the children of America should not
be exposed to this kind of violence until they are at least 16 or
17, like the ratings imply.
Do video games have a positive effect on some students?
Should the ratings on video games become more enforced?
Does violence in Video games mean violence in real life?

A Special Contract NFL’s Training Camp
Meet Our Basketball Players
By Leo Warbington and Michael
Smith. From February 22-25 the NFL
hosted the scouting combine. The
scouting combine is a training camp
where they run draft prospects through
tests and drills to increase their draft
ratings. The most common drills are
bench press, vertical jump, the 3 cone
drill, broad jump, and the most popular
drill the 40-yard dash. Like every year
the combine was at Lucas Oil Stadium
in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Some key players at the combine
were Jadeveon Clowney, John-
ny
Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh
Boyd, Sammy Watkins, and Michael
Sam. Each day they had players from
certain positions participate. Day 1
was tight ends, offensive linemen, and
kickers. Then day 2 was quarterbacks,
running backs, and wide receivers.
Day 3 was defensive linemen and line-
backers. Finally, day 4 was defensive
backs. For players who didn’t partici-
pate in the combine they still have a
chance to perform at their college pro
day in March.

fer. Belzer has some exceptional ath-
letes. The girls’ basketball team has
some very great players this year on the
team. Here are some of Belzer’s girl ath-
letes.
The 7th grade girls’ basketball team
has a very strong team. Some of their
players are Charlize Turner, Ayri Davis,
Hayley Ragonesi, and Jessica Carrol.
Charlize Turner is a shooting guard or
forward and has been playing for 5
years. “I like just being able to play.”
Ayri Davis is a shooting guard and has
been playing 4 years; “I love being a
team and having people by your side.”
Hayley Ragonesi is a point guard and
has been playing for 8 years. “I like
playing with my team and just being
able to go out there and have fun the
most.” Jessica Carrol is a center and has
been playing her whole life because her
mom was a coach. “I like playing bas-
ketball because it’s entertaining.”
The 8th grade basketball team also has
excellent players on their team. Some of
their players are Abby Nickson, Nia
King, Allison Hiedl, and Trinity Rainey.
Abby Nickson is a point guard and has
been playing for 9 years. She likes eve-
rything about playing basketball. Nia
King is a shooting guard and has been
playing for 9 years. She likes the defense
the most about playing basketball. Alli-
son Hiedl is a guard and has been play-
ing for 7 years. “I like defense the most
in basketball.” Trinity Rainey is a point
guard and has been playing for 11 years.
She likes the offense the most in basket-

All Star Weekend Recap
By Rodney Warfield. All-Star weekend was a blast in NOLA
with some interesting highlights. In the Sprint Celebrity All-
Star game, Kevin Hart won his 3rd MVP award, but he decided
to give the award to U.S. Secretary of defense Arne Duncan
who had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. After
the celebrity all-star game was the BBVA Compass Rising Stars
Challenge. It was a great show with Andre Drummond record-
ing 30 points
and 25 re-
bounds win-
ning MVP of
the game. Tim
Hardaway Jr
and Dion
Waiters was
the real entertainment going back to back with
three pointers.
Saturday held the Sears Shooting Stars. It was
a great contest with Chris Bosh hitting two half
court shots in a row along with Swin Cash and
Tim Hardaway Sr helping him out to win the
challenge.
It was a close match in the Taco Bell Skills
Challenge with Trey Burke hitting a clutch
layup with 1/10 of a second left and winning
the contest with Damian Lillard.
The Foot Locker Three Point Contest was amazing.
Marcos Bellinelli and Bradley Beal had to win in the
tie breaker. Marcos Bellinelli came out with the win
and giving Team West the victory.
The Sprite Dunk Contest brought a night nobody
could forget. John Wall shut down the contest by
jumping over the wizards mascot with a two hand
behind the back dunk, winning dunker of the night. In
the 63rd annual all-star game, the East all-stars defeat-
ed the West 163-155. The record was broken for most
points scored in the all-star game with 318 points. There were
some good highlights from LeBron James with his miraculous
windmill dunk.
The MVP of the
game was Kyrie
Irving with 31
points and 14 as-
sists. New Orleans
gave the NBA a
great show.

By: Emma Orcutt. My Big Campus allows
students to access and keeps them in a social
environment where they can chat with
friends and discuss their work. If there was
no My Big Campus, students would be una-
ble to complete much of their work. MBC
gives students a place to take tests and fix
assignments. Also, MBC saves trees from
being cut down to make paper! It helps the
learning of children and if students need a bit
of help on tests, teachers can allow the cor-
rect answers to be shown once they finish the
test. The alternative for MBC would be
Google, but Google is not monitored by
adults to make sure kids are safe! When you
use the hangouts, people other than fellow
classmates or friends are part of the conver-
sations. It is known that Google does try to
protect you from harm; however, they cannot
monitor every action that is done on their
site. On Google, hangouts can be reached
during activities, but on My Big Campus
students cannot cheat and the work is honest-
ly their own which is a good thing. There are
a few problems with My Big Campus, but students have had
the same problems on Google, Gmail, and Hangouts. My Big
Campus is school and kid friendly.
CLOVER GOLD GREEN IRELAND
LEPRECHAUN LUCKY MARCH
POT OF GOLD RAINBOW
ST PATRICK
By: Jillian Hartlerode. My
Big Campus, or MBC, can be
an annoying and privacy invad-
ing site. People can spam your
feed with annoying discussions
that contain no information,
making it hard to see actual
school-related discussions that
count for grades. When it
comes to access, MBC gives
students and teachers a little
too much. Parents, students,
and teachers are allowed to see
where you go to school which
connects to where you live.
This can create an uncomforta-
ble environment, knowing that
some random person can find
out where you live. While it
does save paper, it does not
make My Big Campus the best
thing to use. If the school were
to use Gmail/Google for exam-
ple, you simply email people schoolwork and such,
making it more private. In short My Big Campus is
intrusive and complicated and should not be used.
My Big Campus, Good Or Bad?
By Lexi Odle. It’s March, and that means the time of
year that most students dread is finally here, ISTEP!
This first of two groups of tests is scheduled for the sec-
ond week of March. It will be a written test for math,
lang. arts, and social studies. There will be another
group of multiple-choice tests in April.
For this first test in Language Arts, there will be an es-
say and a few short answer questions with an article at-
tached. Make sure you include evidence from the article
in your 3-5 sentence answer. In math/algebra, you will be
solving a number of problems. You can be scored up to 2
points per problem. Be careful to show all of your work,
or you won’t get your full 2 points.
In social studies, you will be looking
at maps, reading articles, and an-
swering short-answer questions.
Make sure to read the directions
extra carefully.
Remember to show what you
know!

been waiting patiently for the
movie date to be announced.
“The Fault in Our Stars” has
been scheduled to come out

romantic comedy-drama that
will have you in tears. De-
spite the tumor-shrinking

nal. However, when a gor-
geous plot twist named
Augustus Waters suddenly
appears at Cancer Kid Sup-
port Group, Hazel’s story is
about to be completely rewrit-
