Human Scrabble Game from Station 3
On 28th January 2015, the English Department of Institut Perguruan Kampus
Tun Hussein Onn had conducted a language game and the TESL (SK) SEM 5
students has been the facilitator for the program. The program intends to expose the
non-native English speaker to use English language in their daily conversation. In
addition, it also helps them to build confidence in speaking using English Language.
On that day, our class has been chosen to be the facilitator and we divided
ourselves into 4 groups which consists of 5 to 7 people in each group. We conducted
a game for the students from PPISMP Sem 2. For our group, we chose to play a
game called ‘Human Scrabble’. This game helps the students to build new
vocabularies in English in interesting way.
For this game, the students need to construct a word using the tiles that has
been given to them in the set induction. Then, they need to create another word
using the tiles left. They have to ensure the word that has been created be arrange
in horizontal or vertical forms but the new word cannot be overlapped with one
another. Marks will be given by referring to each tiles they use to create those words.
The longer the word, the higher the marks.
During the game, the students started to help each other to create word using
those tiles. They also gained new vocabulary because some of them are really
experts in English. This is a good way to learn something new because they manage
to corporate with each other very well to ensure they can collect more marks. It also
showed that the students became more competitive with each other to do their very
best.
We are very lucky to have the CCCU students to help us in conducting the
game. After they finished to construct the words by the given time, one of the CCCU
students, Ruth, who had been assigned to help our group started to make
conversations with the students to help them overcome their fear to speak with the
native English speaker. From the observation, the students was very enthusiastic
while talking with Ruth and they can speak very well even they was startled a little
bit.
Last but not least, this language game is one of the interactive way to attract
people to learn English either directly or indirectly. We received a lot of good
feedback from the students that participated in this program and they hope that the
English Department can provide much more activities as such to help them practice
English form time to time.
