F.A.Q. Why Do Some Conventions and Basketry Classes Cost So Much?

Your Gourd and Basket Weekend Committee has been working diligently to put together 2017’s Weekend in the Garden. This article is an attempt to briefly describe what a “preparation and materials” fee covers and why it differs so greatly among different instructors.

As the reputation of the MWGBG has grown, we have begun to attract teachers of national and international reputation to participate in our Weekend. Many in 2017’s lineup come from great distances; some provide materials such as cedar and birch bark requiring an unbelievable amount of preparation time and effort.

Your materials and preparation fees cover such things as materials, their collection, preparation, instruction sheets, tools, and shipping costs, and other supplies that your instructor may provide as well as helping to defray their travel expenses. In an attempt to keep costs down as much as possible, guild members often offer to host out of town instructors. Some of our local instructors charge very little, even though they generously provide materials as they do not have food and lodging issues like those from outside of our general area.

Your registration fees on the other hand help pay the Garden for the printing and mailing of the registration booklet, staff expenses for processing the registration of students, set-up time, take-down time and so forth.

She enjoys teaching and sharing her enthusiasm of gourd art with her students and has made more than seven instructional DVD’s.

Gail Ethier has been making things since she was old enough to hold a crayon. After attending the University of Minnesota, she lived in Seattle where she added kite making, basket making and wire work to her art repertoire while working at the Pacific Science Center as an exhibit developer. After moving to San Diego, she joined MWGBG, where she led workshops and taught classes. Some of her work has been published in Cloth Paper Scissors. She is an award winning artist who enjoys her travels to gourd festivals and basket guilds around the U.S. She has been teaching pine needle coiling on gourds for 12 years and incorporates natural materials into her gourd baskets. She is a member of the San Diego County Gourd Artists as well as the California, Missouri, and Texas gourd societies and is also an American Gourd Society Certified Judge.
