MESSAGE OF THE CO-PRESIDENTS
The Auxiliary is always ready to take onprojects that will help improve patientcomfort and demonstrate our appreciation forhospital staff.
Our most recent endeavour is a BereavementProgram to help parents cope with andunderstand the loss of an infant. Working inconjunction with the Neo-Natal NursingDepartment, The Auxiliary will provide itemsof comfort for grieving parents. We will alsobe donating items for the existing hospitalroom to make it more a place of solace.
We have undertaken to support the MemoryClinic, headed by Dr. Ruby Friedman, with twoevents – the first an educational informationsession and the second, a benefit performanceof Sherlock Holmes at the Segal Centre forPerforming Arts, with a dînatoire and Sherlockand Dr. Watson in regalia at this red carpetevening. Hope to see you there!
By having on-going successful clothing sales,it gives our hardworking staff the opportunityto shop for stylish clothing at bargain prices.Our loyal clientele truly appreciate theconvenience of shopping at our newly openedBoutique En Bas with enthusiastic anddedicated volunteers on hand to offer fashionadvice .
Gourmet Fine Foods To Go is our newestventure into the food industry by sellinggourmet dinners, vacuum-packed to seal infreshness. Staff and visitors will be able topurchase these delicious dinners, as well asdesserts, to take home and serve to theirfamilies and friends.
On-site vendors, our book nooks, our MillyLande Boutique and mobile food cart continueto be well received by staff, visitors andpatients throughout the hospital.
We are proud to report that our membershiproster is growing and The Auxiliary remains abusy place, supporting the JGH in any waypossible.

The 20th Annual Golf ClassicElm Ridge Golf and Country Club.
Supported by funding from The Auxiliary,Dr. Clown spends one day a week at theJGH, using laughter to amuse patients andrelieve the stress of hospitalization. It’s notjust medical doctors who visit othercountries to confer with colleagues: thetherapeutic entertainers of Dr. Clown dothe same. Earlier this year, Dr. Fifi(Montreal’s Melissa Holland) attended theDream Doctors Medical ClowningConference in Israel. This became thespringboard for a visit in April by the IsraeliDream Doctors to the JGH, the MontrealChildrens’ Hospital and Sainte JustineHospital.

AUXILIARY - DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINEACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AWARD This year Dr. Michelle Elizov was the winner of a cash prizeawarded by Dr. Ernesto L. Schiffrin, Chief of the department. Shewill be applying the gift toward a course entitled “DevelopingLeaders in Healthcare Education” offered by ASME, a renownedorganization in the field of medical education, in Windsor, U.K.This course will help Dr. Elizov in her leadership positions here atthe JGH, as well as at the McGill and national levels.

ROBOTIC ARMS PROVIDE HANDS-ON SURGICAL TRAININGThe JGH acquired the da Vinci surgical system, one of the mostadvanced in Quebec.
Thanks to a generous donation from The Auxiliary, the JGH recentlyacquired a stand-alone da Vinci surgical training simulator, to helpdevelop the expertise and skills to perfom surgery using the robot.
In the operating room, the machine is equipped with special surgicalinstruments attached to robotic arms as well as display screens. Theyare manipulated by a surgeon who is seated at a console and controlsspecial hand and foot pedals. The arms give the surgeon a greaterrange of motion than is present in the human wrist, enabling thesurgeon to perform with more flexibility and precision.Dr. Walter Gotlieb, Merle Klam
THE JEWISH GENERAL HOSPITAL/ MCGILL UNIVERSITYMEMORY CLINICFounded in 1991, the Clinic, presently under the direction of Dr. Ruby Friedman, wasthe first of its type in North America, created to become a focal point for resources,training and expertise in geriatric medicine. To develop accurate early diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease and offer treatment with proven andexperimental therapies.The MOCA test, a cognitive test that has been translated intomany languages and used world wide, was developed at this clinic. The Clinic servesbetween 800-900 patients a year. Patients are evaluated by a team to determinewhat type or degree of memory loss. Some people who are referred are as youngas 40 and there is a growing waiting list. As an important resource for thecommunity, the ultimate goal is to help each individual remain independent andhappy in society as long as possible.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Occupational therapists, Sheila Maislin, Gabi Rosberger andCathryn Brogan informed us of the Adolescent and Young AdultOncology (AYAO) program between our oncology departmentand McGill, for cancer patients between the ages of 18-39 whohave medical and psychological challenges due to “role loss”.
The Auxiliary funded LUMOSITY (brain training web site),offering therapeutic activities and memory strategies topatients who could benefit from this tool as a consistent wayto work on brain problems in the convenience of a homesetting on their computers.

MOHS SURGERY – PRIVATE WAITING AREASkin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada. Its incidence isincreasing rapidly. The JGH is doing its part and is among a handfulof hospitals in Canada to perform Mohs micrographic surgery – aspecialized technique for the surgical removal of high-risk skincancer that offers the highest cure rate for non-melanoma skincancer, while conserving as much unaffected tissue as possible. Therate of cure of these tumours using this procedure is 99%.
The JGH Skin Cancer Centre will comprise of a specially designedenvironment with one-day surgery suites, a pathology lab, a privatewaiting area for patients, a microscope reading room, exam rooms– all of which are required to provide optimal working conditionsto perform Mohs surgery efficiently and safely.
