Governor PR Cook IT'S TIME TO GROW I served as Lt. Governor under Charlie Ridenour in 1994 - 1995. I have found and been sharing membership numbers from those years to numbers as of September 2014. Membership for the District has decreased 40.95% during that time. Of course, some Clubs have decreased more than that while others have decreased more and the numbers include Clubs which folded. The point is, growth is essential to the continuation of Kiwanis which is essential to our service. I prepared a summary for the years 1988 through 2013 of the money spent on service projects for the Fort Oglethorpe Kiwanis during that time. The figures were amazing and impressed our membership. I encourage your Club to compile the same information. I am sure your results will show that we (Kiwanis) are making a difference in our communities and that, after all, is what being a Kiwanian is all about. IT'S TIME TO COMPLETE FUNDING OF ELIMINATE It is very difficult for me to realize that we can save the life of a Child for $1.80. Yet, that is all it costs. We need to work toward completing our goal of eliminating maternal neonatal tetanus in countries where children are dying needlessly. Every little bit helps. I would love to see every club in the KT District making a contribution to this project. IT'S TIME TO HAVE FUN This is the third goal of International President John Button for the year 2014 - 2015. I have always had fun being a member of Kiwanis, yet this year, the 100 th , is going to be spectacular. Many Clubs, Divisions, and Districts are planning on celebrating this occasion. At Mid-Year in Alcoa, we are having a party. Bring your overalls, straw hats etc and be ready to have a great time. IT'S TIME TO REALIZE THE IMPACT OF KIWANIS

Have you ever thought of what your life would be like without Kiwanis? I know I would probably be wasting a great deal of time if I were not a member. I truly believe I am a better person because I am a Kiwanian. Kiwanis has given me the opportunity to help eradicate iodine disorder deficiency, and work on eliminating maternal neonatal tetanus in addition to all the work done in our community. Just to be around members of Key Club, I realize the need for

the existence of our organization. We are not only making a difference in our lives, but we are truly improving the world by making a difference in the lives of others.

Eliminate

Is the Ebola issue interfering with Eliminate efforts?

Our partners from the U.S. Fund for UNICEF have sent these talking points. The two countries that are still at risk for MNT and are threatened by the Ebola emergency are Guinea and Nigeria. “The outbreak began in Guinea in early 2014 and quickly spread to the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia, with large numbers of reported cases in rural, urban and peri-urban areas. The virus risks spreading to other areas, including the neighboring countries of Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal. Most countries in the region have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) within the past two years: Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The majority of women and their future newborns are still protected against tetanus, and women will be for the majority of their estimated childbearing years. Guinea has also had success reaching women of reproductive age with the tetanus toxoid vaccine. However, immunization coverage rates in the remote southeast–where the Ebola outbreak is thought to have begun, were not high enough to warrant a validation survey for the country. More work needs to be done in this part of Guinea but is being delayed due to the Ebola emergency. UNICEF has also procured key supplies for use in Ebola Treatment Units and community care centers, and is playing a broader programmatic and coordination role to restore and protect continuity in the delivery of basic social services. These include maternal and child healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, education and child protection (like mental health, psychosocial support, appropriate alternative care support for unaccompanied/separated/orphaned/ abandoned children and social protection/welfare). UNICEF also supports a ‘whole package’ approach to the prevention of water-borne diseases, backing the continuation of social cash transfers and strengthening the capacity of health workers.

Kiwanis Club of Frankfort Holds Pastor Appreciation Month Breakfast

The Human & Spiritual Values Committee of the Kiwanis Club of Frankfort sponsored a breakfast in recognition of “Pastor Appreciation Month” which is observed in October. Invitations were mailed out using the Frankfort Church Directory compiled by the Committee, and copies of which are placed in local motels.

A potluck meal was provided by Club members and received many compliments, especially the “biscuits and gravy’ prepared by Committee vice chair Georgetta Nelson, a retired Salvation Army officer. The breakfast was held at the Salvation Army, one of the local agencies with which the Kiwanis Club enjoys a strong partnership.

Human & Spiritual Committee Chair Tommy Haynes said a hazardous fog blanked much of the city the morning of the breakfast, “which hurt our attendance. But we were truly pleased with the event, which we plan to develop as an annual celebration. The thanks and compliments we received from the pastors, reinforces our belief that the breakfast is a way that our Club can share and live the first Object of Kiwanis International.”

White Ribbon Against Pornography

Along with the food, music and spiritual uplifting, the breakfast was also utilized as a time to announce a new project being worked on by the Human & Spiritual Values Committee. This is “White Ribbons Against Pornography,’ or WRAP. Frankfort Mayor William May was on hand to proclaim the week of October 24 as WRAP Week in Frankfort. Several hundred cards containing a WRAP message and a white ribbon which could be detached and pined onto a person’s garment, were made available for churches and other organizations for distribution. Members of the Kentucky State University Circle K Club placed the white ribbons on the handout cards as a CKI service project.

Has my club filed the correct tax forms? Submitted by Fran Marion, District Secretary-Treasurer

Club officers – have you checked to see if your club is current with filing your annual report with your state? KY clubs go to: www.sos.ky.gov and click on file annual report (put in Kiwanis and you can find your club) TN clubs go to: www.tn.gov and click on file a report.

Also, has you club been filing the 990-series tax return? If your club has not filed for 3 years, it could result in the loss of its 501(c)4 tax exempt status. Go to: www.irs.gov – file forms – charities & non-profits. Use the exempt organization select check tool to find your club.

Has your club done its annual audit? The audit is required by the bylaws of every club.

We have several clubs in the District that have not filed the new club bylaws. Let’s have 100% compliance. Call the district office for help if needed.

Remember to file monthly reports by the 10th of each month. Have your committee chairs check the directory for rules for awards for your club. Don’t get behind – start now!

See you at Mid-Year

Checks to American Cancer Society On August 28th, Downtown Kiwanis President Elect John Oliver presented a check for $305 to Tom Dolan of the American Cancer Society. Scott Jordan, Kiwanian and member of the Paducah Jeep Owners Club also presented a check for $680 to the American Cancer Society. The checks represented funds raised at a Jeep Show held on August 23rd. At the show, Downtown Kiwanis made a “dress rehearsal” of its award winning BBQ for later this month. President Elect Oliver remarked about the great time everyone involved had and how it was nice to couple good fellowship with raising money for a good cause. Paducah Jeep Owners Club is a group of like-minded individuals who all have one thing in common: the love of Jeeps, trail riding, back roads exploration, and volunteering to help where ever they can. PJOC is an internet club which has no dues, by-laws, officers, etc. The club posts events to their Facebook page. Downtown Kiwanis is a group of men and women dedicated to philanthropic efforts and community service. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. Downtown Kiwanis raises most of its funds through an annual Christmas Auction and participation in BBQ on the River.

Governor-Elect Chuck Training is taking place as we prepare for the next 100 years in Kiwanis service in Indianapolis, Indiana. I would encourage Team Kiwanis Clubs to begin thinking outside the box in reaching the children in our Kentucky and Tennessee District. We need to prepare to saddle up our horses because we have a trail to ride throughout our wondering district. We should be looking forward at building clubs, SLP, starting new clubs, and having fun. It will take a team effort to WIN the game. International President Sue Petrisin (2015-16) reminds us to begin identifying your team members, our playbook, our cheerleaders, and our KT office staff, and strategic planning team in making that preparation. We are looking forward to Kentucky and Tennessee Kiwanians reaching and serving the children of our states. Know it is time to listen and look for new ideas, and concepts.

The time is here! Chuck

The Oak Ridge TN Kiwanis Club had a display at the October 23, 2014 Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce (ORCC) Networking Event. Interested persons were told about Kiwanis and Key Club. Folks in other groups were met, information was exchanged about activities, and potential interactions were identified. Networking occurred under a large tent set up temporarily on the ORCC parking lot.

The Frankfort Kiwanis Club helped the Salvation Army get the holiday giving season off to an early start by ringing the bell to fill the kettles at Kroger Brighton Park on Saturday. Long time Kiwanian Gene Flynn was but one of twenty Frankfort Kiwanians who donned vests and rang the bell from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday while generous shoppers filled the kettles. Thanks to all who contributed!

KIWANIS BACK TO SCHOOL GIFT CARD PROGRAM

On July 24th, 2014, Kiwanis of Tellico Village distributed fifty $100 Wal-Mart gift cards for back to school clothing to the Lenoir City and the Loudon County school systems. These gift cards, totaling $5000, were given to disadvantaged children chosen by Susan Fox, Director of Family Resource Center of Lenoir City schools and Cindy Purdy, Director of the Family Resource Center of Loudon County schools for the purchase of back to school clothing. This project was made possible by a generous donation from our corporate sponsor, Malibu Boats and both Mike Quinlan and Donna Tallent from Malibu were present during the presentation. Bob Frazer, the project leader from Kiwanis, expressed his deep appreciation to Malibu for their continued support of Kiwanis’ children projects. Management team member Tammy Lane of Wal-Mart of Lenoir City was present to assist in distributing the gift cards and Bob expressed his thanks to Wal-Mart for providing the venue to hold this event and the refreshments to support this project.

KIWANIS SEEKS NEW MEMBERS

“We started the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village 16 years ago with 35 members” said Don Whiteman, a charter member of the Club. “We are now 95 members and still growing” said Don “because of the enthusiasm of our members in supporting the children and youth in our area. Kiwanis International will be 100 years old in January, 2015.” “You might say we celebrated the sixteenth anniversary of our Club by partnering with the Kahite community to build a youth playground for the families in the Kahite neighborhood shown in the photograph” said Bob Bland, president of our Kiwanis Club. The playground was dedicated to the memory of Stephanie Whitener by Rachael Kohn, (for more details see The Connection June 18, 2014). “We now have over 50 programs all geared to the youth in our communities,” said Bob, “including the Key Club at Loudon HS, reading and tutoring at the elementary schools, “Back To School” gift cards for children in need, Trout in the Classroom for children of the middle schools and the AmTryke therapeutic tricycle program, just to name a few.” The Kiwanis Club of Tellico meets for lunch the first and third Tuesday each month at 11:30. Please accept this invitation to be our guest. Come and enjoy the fellowship of our Club and an informative guest speaker. You can call John Strine, Membership Chairman (865) 458-1966 for more information or contact any member of our club. Submitted by Ray Scott

Eliminate What is the plan for long term prevention of tetanus with Eliminate? UNICEF partners with local health care organizations in the countries where we are working to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. As part of the process, UNICEF establishes how the country will sustain our efforts through ongoing vaccines. As Sue Fleschner observed when she traveled to Haiti with UNICEF in April, the local country health organizations implement on-going vaccination programs for the general population. As part of these programs, children and adults will continue to receive these necessary vaccines. Sue witnessed this in action at several clinics in Haiti! The Eliminate campaign is bridging the gap. We are targeting mothers who may not have received a vaccine before these programs were in place. By vaccinating these mothers now, we give the infants the vital immunization they need until the babies are able to take advantage of the in-country vaccination programs now in place.

KENTUCKY-TENNESSEE DISTRICT CONVENTION 2014 REVISITED

As the Aktion Club Administrator for the District Aktion Clubs, I want to share the new experience we had at our District Convention. Those who were there, will recall we were present with members of District Aktion Clubs, including The Smoky Mountains Aktion Club and the Aktion Club of Rogersville. We will be inviting members to join us again, for the mid-year conference, in Alcoa. The Aktion Clubs, have made their presence known with a display, and this year, a member gave us reason for Kiwanis Clubs, to seek out agencies in their area, to begin discussions about organizing Aktion Clubs. For those who missed the convention, I wanted to share a picture of our Governor, and members of Aktion Club with the Aktion Club Bear. We have pictures of Kiwanis Clubs having their pictures taken, as well. What Kiwanis Club in Kentucky will be the first to organize a new Aktion Club?

The Aktion Clubs from around the country have supported the Kiwanis Eliminate Project by raising over $92,000.00. The Goal between now and January is to reach $100,000.00 through projects including Trick 0r Treat, Thanksgiving, and Holiday giving. I am proud of the clubs which have stepped up in our District to support the Eliminate Project including the Smoky Mountains Aktion Club, and The Northside Aktion Club of Knoxville. REACH OUT, TO YOUR COMMUNITY AND START AN AKTION CLUB, WE WILL HELP YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS. Contact David Coulter [email protected] or call 865-446-4539.

Some of the groups are Big Brothers and Sisters, school Family Resource Centers, Sheriff’s Ranch, Shop with a Cop, Baptist Health, Hospice Camp Butterfly for Kids, 4 H, Happy Feet, Salvation Army, Family Advocacy Center, United Way, etc. Whitney Waldrip and Tim Thomas developed the program for our September 26th, 2014 program held at the United Methodist MAC center on Scott Street in Madisonville KY. Noon Kiwanis of Madisonville meet every Friday at noon at the church since its founding in 1922. This group photo was taken of the groups honored that day.
