Summer greetings -
August is Membership Month in the
Rotary world. And I’m happy to report
that while the district secretary and I make
our official visits, we are learning that
most clubs have plans to make a concerted
effort with membership growth. These
clubs are setting realistic goals, and most
importantly, are putting committees in
place to achieve those goals with the help
of their club members. Club presidents
and their committees should use the Pres-
idential Citation and Changemaker
Awards as a guideline and roadmap to di-
rect their membership efforts to reflect the
diversity of their communities.
And these efforts are producing results.
The Haledon club grew by 25% with 3
new members. The Englewood, Teaneck
and Maywood clubs will each induct 3 –
5 new members during the next few
weeks. So you see, it can be done.
We just need to ask. Ask our friends,
colleagues, clients, neighbors, service
providers and so forth, to join us at a
meeting in order to share the Rotary ex-
perience, enjoy the fellowship and learn
about the good works and projects we do.
Dear friends,
Above: Mel W. Tantillo from the Passaic Valley/ Lit-
tle Falls Rotary Club. He became a member in
1966. He has 100% attendance in Rotary. He was
born in Garfield NJ. In the picture with Mel is Ro-

ROTARY UN DAY
Reservations are now open for this
year’s Rotary Day at the UN, which
will take place Saturday, November 5.
This year, seats are very limited, since
there will be renovations to the UN.
There are special programs for young people. You can also register at
http://www.riunday.org. Rotary International and the Red Cross are the only
non-nation members of the United Nations.
HAITI PROJECT – August 22-27
We are looking for a few volunteers to help us with construction work
on the new school we are building in southern Haiti. We would like
to work the week of August 22, Mon. - Sat. The majority of the hard
work has been done, we just need to cut, weld, and fabricate wrought
iron walls, a couple doors, and window guards. Then a lot of painting!
We can use a couple people for welding/cutting and a couple of
painters!
If interested and able to make a quick trip to the Caribbean, please
call Andy at 201-410-0155 or email [email protected]. Thanks!
Remember...the more hands that Ro-
tary has, the more good works Ro-
tarians can do...in our communities,
throughout our nation and around
the world.
It was been a most rewarding ex-
perience to visit most of our district’s
clubs in the first two months of my
term. Thank you for your hospitality
and warm reception, but most for all
for sharing your plans, ideas and in-
spirations for all the community
service and international projects
you will endeavor to carry out this
Rotary year.
Let’s each one of us Reach Within
to Embrace Humanity.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Emil Geering

MEMBERSHIP MAGIC
I think the best feature of Rotary is that it is the most international organization,
service or otherwise, in the world. No other entity is in over 207 countries, not even
McDonalds can boast such a feat.
We are truly unique in our size, effectiveness and scope.
I would tell prospective members that they if they want to make a real difference in
the world and want to have fun doing it, join a Rotary Club. Not only are you giving
to people less fortunate but you will also have fun doing it. You will also meet won-
derful people in the process.
When a tiny child from Honduras came to our District for heart surgery, made possi-
ble by my club. She grabbed my pinkie finger and looked into my eyes. At that point
I realized that without Rotary this child would never grow up. It made me proud to
be a human being but more so a Rotarian.
I brought in my bank manger to be a Rotarian. After months of explaining all the
wonderful things I got out of it, being a Rotarian, he decided to see for himself. He
went to one meeting and was hooked; he joined the very next month.
I am very proud to tell this and other stories about Rotary. It really is the magic of
our organization. The more you talk about it, the more you verbalize what you feel
inside, the easier it is for people to join and have Rotary become a part of their lives
just as it has done for us.
Make it habit to wear your pins. This way you can give your elevator speech.
I am a Rotarian. I belong to the oldest service organization in the world. We invented
the concept. We are 106 years and going strong. We are in 207 countries making us
the most international organization on the planet. We have the most flown flag in the
world with the most recognized logo. Rotary gives more scholarships to more chil-
dren than anybody else. We helped start the United Nations and are in the process of
stamping out Polio after nearly 25 years and having given over 2 billion children the
immunization.
Memorize this. Let everybody know how
proud we are to be Rotarians. That’s how
to grow your Clubs. That’s the magic of
Rotary. Joe Dino

PARAMUS SUNRISE
Negativity is usually not productive! So
let us think positively about the few peo-
ple who have been attending our meet-
ings lately. Kind of fitting because this is
Membership Month in the Rotary world
and we need to bring in new members.
Reach out to your friends . those that
you think might make energetic new
members. Let’s increase our membership
and get active!
National Night Out had Gary, Liz, Joe,
Sophie, Tina and me there. Our candy
went before you could say SHAZAAM!
We did help out the noon club with some
because they ran out. Kathleen from
Doctors Express used up all of her Band-
Aids and heart shaped squeezable balls.
In short .. we had a lot of activity at our
tables. Of course www.ParamusPost.com
was there .. Sam Stone took videos ..
some of which are online.
On August 23, Gary has Habitat For Hu-
manity scheduled and has asked the
other Paramus clubs to join us. Check

ORADELL-EMERSON
The Oradell-Emerson Club was recently
featured in a great article in the Star
Ledger, which noted the Club’s healthy
increase in membership in the last year.
Now with about 20 members, the club’s
emphasis on charitable work, both local
and international, has appealed to new
members.
Locally, the Oradell-Emerson club pro-
vides scholarships each year for both
River Dell and Emerson High Schools,
and sponsors an Interact Club for the stu-
dents. The club also holds food drives to
support the Center for Food Action and
the Bergen County Housing, Health and
Human Services Center in Hack-
ensack.
Interna-
tionally,
Oradell-
Emerson is
also active
in RI’s Haiti
projects,
and mem-
bers were at work about
80 miles outside Port-au-Prince when the
earthquake struck last year.
The club is pleased with the great press,
which will hopefully encourage others to
join in Rotary’s endeavors near and far.
FAIR LAWN
Rotarians around the world are celebrat-
ing the start of the new Rotary Year;
throughout the world President-elects are
starting their presidency that will run
from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
Globally, the President of Rotary Interna-
tional is Kalyan Banerjee whose Rotary
Theme is “Reach Within to Embrace Hu-
manity”. President Banerjee has asked
all of us to search within ourselves to un-
derstand that all of us, everywhere, have
the same dreams, the same hopes, the
same aspirations, and similar dilemmas.
It is President Banerjee’s belief that
when we understand, and truly feel, that
others’ needs are the same as our own,
we begin to understand how important
our work is as Rotarians.
In the year ahead Fair Lawn Rotarians
will work under President Banerjee’s vi-
sion to see how we, as individuals, can
work with Rotarians around the world to
bring peace, harmony and friendship to
bring positive change to all around us.
This year’s Club President, Glenn

WAYNE ROTARY
Wayne Rotarians dance a Conga line ,complete with live music, to entertainsome 130 residents at the PreaknessHealthcare Center. It was Wayne Rotary’sannual Christmas in July program, whichbrings, music, dancing, singing, Santa, and lots of presents to nursing home resi-dents. In all, there were some 1,000 pres-ents, wrapped, packed and organized byWayne Rotarians. Why July? Because this is a vacation pe-riod when friends and family are lesslikely to visit those living in the Center. This was a particularly significant Christ-mas in July for Wayne Rotary, because itmarked the twentieth consecutive year inwhich Rotarians sponsored this popularevent. Anticipating that this will becomea District-wide program, there were rep-resentatives in attendance from a dozenDistrict Rotary Clubs, including PatersonGreat Falls, Bayonne, Fort Lee, ParkRidge, Paramus, Pompton Lakes, Mid-Bergen, Ridgewood AM, Wayne, Hawthorne,Northern Valley, and Paramus Sunrise. And, our District governor, Emil Geeringwas right there, handing out presents, andsupporting this 20th Anniversary program.
