English
The syllabus approved by the Board of Studies of English is being
submitted to the Autonomous Examination Cell, Govt. V.Y.T.P.G.
Auto. College, Durg, with the following remarks :
Syllabus -Under Graduate : English Language/English
Literature
B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. I, II, III – English Language
The language paper of all the three years has been divided into 3
sections : A, B & C.
Section A: Contains grammar and vocabulary exercises of 30
marks
Section B: B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.Part I & Part II contains the
following items :
(i) Questions from the prescribed text.
(ii) Comprehension of an unseen passage.
B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.Part III contains the following
items:
(i) Short answer type questions based on the prescribed
lessons.
(ii) Comprehension of an unseen passage.
(iii) Precis writing
This section is of 25 marks.
Section C:-
In Part I and Part II this section is devoted to writing skills,
whereas in part III the section will also contain long answer
questions (100 words) from the prescribed text.
This section is of 20 marks.
Syllabus BCA Part I
The English Language Paper of BCA Part I has two papers.
Paper I – General Awareness.
This paper is divided into 3 sections A, B & C.
Section A – Consists of 10 objective type questions based on
prescribed text.
This section is of 10 marks.
Section B – Comprises short answer type (50 words) questions
based on the prescribed text.
This section is of 15 marks.
Section C - Comprises long answers / descriptive type
questions (100 words).
This section is of 25 marks.
Paper II – Communication skills –
The paper is based on contents related to communication skills
(grammatical items, vocabulary and writing skills).
This paper is divided into 5 units of 10 marks each.
Note: Due to the above mentioned contents it is not possible to
change the pattern of the paper.
The English language paper of B.C.A. Part II and B.C.A. Part III
has only 1 paper and is divided into 3 sections A, B and C.
Section Acontains grammar and vocabulary of 20 marks.
Section B
a) B.C.A. Part II consists of
* Questions from the prescribed text (50 words).
* Reading comprehension of an unseen passage.
This section is of 20 marks.
b) B.C.A. Part III consists of
* Questions from the prescribed text.
* Reading comprehension of an unseen passage.
* Precis writing
This section is of 20 marks.
Section C of B.C.A. Part II &III consists of writing skills.
This section is of 10 marks.
B.A. Part I/II/III – English Literature
The literature papers of B.A. I/II/III comprise of 3 sections: A, B,
and C.
Section A contains objective/very short answer type questions
from the units mentioned in the syllabus.
Section B contains annotation of passages from the texts
prescribed for detailed studies instead of short answer type
questions. It is worth mentioning herethatin the paper of English
Literature, annotation of passages is an important component as
this tests the students’ understanding of the text and also their
writing skills.
Section C contains long answer type questions from the units
mentioned.
Note : In case , any change or modification is prescribed by Central Board of
Studies or Higher Education Department, Govt. of Chhattisgarh with respect to
content or distribution of marks for under graduate syllabi, it will be
implemented accordingly.

English Language.

Min.marks – 26
The paper is divided into 3 sections A, B & C.
Section A
Grammar & Vocabulary 1x20 = 20 marks
a) Grammar – The ability to fill in the blanks, correct errors,
choose correct forms out of alternative choices, join clauses, rewrite sentences as directed. This shall include:
(i) Articles/Countable, Uncountable Nouns (ii) Present Tense (iii) Past Tense (iv) Future Tense (v) Use of some-any, too-
enough, (vi) Conditional sentences (vii) Modals (viii) Direct and Indirect Narration. (ix) Sentence Synthesis (x) Active and
Passive Voice (xi) Preposition (xii) Gerund (xiii) Word Formation.
Note : The questions based on grammar exercises shall contain
all the aforementioned items from the prescribed text. 30 questions to be asked and 20 to be answered.
b) Vocabulary : Vocabulary exercises based on the prescribed text. 1 x 10= 10 marks
This section consists of 30 marks.
Section B
Comprehension
(a) Short answer type questions from the prescribed text (10 to be
given, 5 to be attempted). 3x5 =15 marks
(b) Comprehension of an unseen passage 10 marks
This should imply not only (a) an understanding of the passage in question, (b) the power of short independent composition
based on themes and issues raised in the passage. To be
assessed by both objective, multiple choice and short answer type questions.
This section consists of 25 marks.
Section C
Composition:
(a) Letter writing – (i) Formal (ii) Informal 5x2 = 10 marks
(b) Paragraph writing word Limit 150 words : 5x2 = 10 marks
Note: There shall be 50 % choice in each category.
This section consists of 20 marks.
Book prescribed –
English Language and Indian Culture – Published by M.P. Hindi Granth Academy, Bhopal.
Note:
1. To pass the examination, students must score 35% marks (26 marks out of 75 marks).
2. The half yearly internal examinations will be held.10% of the marks obtained by the students in each paper in internal examination will be added to 90% of marks obtained in each paper of annual examination.
3. In case , any change or modification is prescribed by Central Board of Studies or Higher Education Department, Govt. of Chhattisgarh with respect to content or distribution of marks for under graduate syllabi, it will be implemented accordingly.

B.C.A. Part I
Foundation Course : General Awareness
Paper - II
Max. marks- 50 Min. Marks - 20
1. India Art, meaning of art, features of Indian art, elementary knowledge
of paintings, music, dancing, sculpture archeology, iconography &
other social arts.
2. Indian Literature, Ancient Indian Literature, Elementary knowledge of
Vedic Literature, Mahabharata, Ramayana and other main granthas.
3. Indian Freedom Struggle: Freedom Struggle of 1857, National
Consciousness, Non Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience
Movement, Quit India Movement, Contribution of revolutionaries in
freedom struggle.
4. Indian Constitution: Introduction, Main features of constitution,
Fundamental rights, and Fundamental duties.
5. The paper is divided into 3 sections A, B & C.
Section A 10 marks
This section consists of 10 objective type questions each of 1 mark
based on the prescribed text.
Section B 15 marks
Comprises short answer type questions based on the prescribed
text. There shall be 10 questions out of which 5 are to be
attempted. Each question will carry 3 marks i.e. 5x3 = 15. The
answer should not exceed the limit of 50 words.
Section C 25 marks
Comprises long answer/descriptive type questions with the limit of
100 words. There shall be 7 questions in all out of which 5 are to
be attempted. Each question will carry 5 marks. 5x5 = 25 marks

BCA-PART I COMMUNICATION SKILLS
PAPER - I Max Marks: 50 Min. Marks: 20
Note :- The paper setter is advised to prepare unit-wise question with the provision of internal choice. Objective: This course is designed to enable the students of computer education to speak and write English with a fair degree of grammatical correctness. The inputs of the course contents are related to spellings, meanings of words and the correct use of words relating to the field of computer & other areas of knowledge . UNIT-I
Vocabulary, knowledge of at least one thousand words-their spellings,
meanings and usages, phrases.
Unit-II
Structure of sentences-Simple, Complex ,and Compound. Coordinate and
Subordinate clauses.
UNIT –III
The Tenses and aspects, Modals, Gerund, Participle and Infinitive.
UNIT-IV
Transformation of sentences:-
1. Interchange of Active and Passive Voice
2. Interchange of Affirmative and Negative Sentences
3. Interchange of Exclamatory and Assertive Sentences
4. Interchange of Interrogative and Assertive Sentences
5. Direct and Indirect Speech
UNIT-V
Dialogue writing, Report writing , Writing of Applications , Letter writing,
Description of Events.
Books:
1. Living English Structure by W.S. Allen
2. A Practical English Grammar by Thomson and Martinet
Testing Pattern: The question paper will clearly specify units and will have
questions from unit I - V .

(a) Report Writing : Word Limit - 150 words
(04 topics to be given and 01 to be attempted 10 marks
(b) Expansion of an idea : Word Limit : 150 words. 10 marks
