Teacher's Paper

Hello kids!

Welcome to "Author of the Week" radio programme! Today you are going to listen about Hans Christian Andersen, a writer who was a famous novelist and poet. However, it is his fairy tales that made him popular among children around the world.

Hans Christian Andersen was born on 2nd April 1805, in Denmark. His father was a shoemaker, and his mother used to wash other people's clothes to earn money. His parents loved him and encouraged him to use his imagination. At the age of fourteen, Andersen asked his mother to let him go to thl! city. Instead of studying to become a tailor, he believed he would become famous.

Unfortunately, at school he was a poor student and never learned how to spell or how to write in Danish. As a result, his writing style is simple and sounds natural. Andersen began his fairy-tale writing by telling folk tales he had heard as a child from his grandmother and others. Soon, however, he began to create his own stories. Among his most popular tales are "The Ugly Duckling," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Little Mennaid."

At first Andersen was not very proud of his fairy-tales and considered stopping his writing. But later he realised that fairy tales show both the positive and negative sides of life. While children can enjoy most of the tales, the best of them are written for adults as well. Andersen died in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 4th August 1875.

That's all for today. Tune in next week to listen about another great author.

Section B - Comprehension (20 marks) The Flying Horse

Cesare hadn't left the stables for days. His favourite mare, Starlight, was pregnant and he had to stay near her until she gave birth. After hurriedly eating dinner he went back to the stables to see Starlight. 'Not long, now, my beauty; he whispered. In a stall on the other side Arcangelo, the young chestnut gelding, shifted about in his sleep and twitched his ears.

Just before midnight something changed. Starlight was restless. At the same time Cesare woke up and realised that his father, Paolo, had come too. He had brought a torch with him which he thrust into a bracket set high up in the wall. Cesare got up to his feet in greeting. By the light of the torch, father and son helped the mare. It was an easy delivery. But as the young horse slipped out into Cesare's hands, he jumped back as if it had been burning hot.

'What is it?' whispered Paolo. The whole stable was quiet. 'I don't know,' Cesare whispered back. 'Can't you feel it? Something's different about this one. When I caught it I felt a shock like a bolt of lightning in the sky.' Starlight turned her beautiful head to lick her new foal. The filly was not just dark, but black, black as the night outside.

The stable door, left open by Paolo, moved in a sudden gust of wind. A ray of moonlight fell across the stall. Cesare gasped. By the silver light of the moon, they saw the strange new horse.

Her coat was a glossy black and she was going to be a good runner. But that was not all. As she started to move, she loosened her shoulders and took out two small, wet, black wings about the size of a young swan's.

'Goodness!' said Paolo in surprise. 'It has happened. Here, the winged horse has been born to us.'
