2017 Penwell Memorial Shoot

Last year it was the rains that cancelled the Sunday portion of the shoot. Thisyear there was no rain, but very gusty wind. The shoot was very well attendedwith doubles starting on Friday afternoon. There were over fifty shooters fordoubles with Clay Baldwin of Arkansas claiming the Champion spot with a 97.

Saturday provided another day of wind for the 12 and 20 gauge events. ClayBaldwin won the 12 gauge in the shootoffs with a 99. Grand Prairie’s own NickGodfrey posted the only 100 in the 20 gauge to win the 20 gauge event withouta shootoff.

And as always, no one ever goes hungry at a GPGC skeet shoot. Thanks to themany volunteers who work the kitchen to provide breakfast, lunch and the eveningshrimp boil. Everything was excellent! Thanks also to the many volunteers whoload the houses and pick up the empty hulls. Our Club would not be what it iswithout our volunteers!

Sunday brought (guess?) … More wind for the 28 and 410 events.Lauren Burge won the 28 gauge in a shootoff and Clay Baldwin won the 410event with the high score of 96.

The High Over All went to Nick Godfrey with a 390. Very impressive for the windconditions that everyone had to contend with.

Mike Skidmore and Jim Speer manned the computer and kept all the scores andevents correct. Thank you both for helping with this event.

Everyone had a great time and the shoot in September promises to be anothersignature GPGC event!

Partly cloudy skies and light winds greetedthe 13 competitors who attended the firstCowboy Lever Action Silhouette shoot at theGrand Prairie Gun Club. On hand were MarkBelser, Wally Gray and others to see whatthe &^(# was going on. The monthly pistolshooters even came by to see what the noisewas all about.

Lever action Silhouette or CLA is a NRA discipline where full sized steel targets of chickens(50m) pigs (100m) turkeys (150m) and rams (200y) are shot with lever-action tube fed ironsighted rifles. Shooters must stand and use no other support but their bodies, (no slings, sticks, etc). The match is shot 5 targets at a time with 2 minutes to complete that string, thendone again before scoring and then moving to the next bank of targets, rotating through allfour target banks to complete the 40 shot match. High scores prevail and winners are selectedby either shoot off or reverse animal count in case of ties starting with turkeys.

All the competitors commented on the great time they had and look forward to returning toGrand Prairie each month to shoot this match. A big thanks for Grand Prairie BOD forsupporting the shooting sports and facilitating the fulfillment of realizing this match. Also thanksto Jim Wilson for setting the gate for access.
