DEGREEWORKS PLANNER USER GUIDE
Assigning, Viewing & Deleting Advising Plans – Advisors
The DegreeWorks Planner is an advising tool that students and advisors use to map out a clear pathway
for timely degree completion. Advising plans created in Planner show students the required courses
within their program(s) and a recommended timeline of when they should be completed. Each advising
plan includes major program requirements, core curriculum skill courses, and recommended advising
notes from each academic department. In order to build an accurate advising plan using Planner,
students and advisors are encouraged to use the DegreeWorks degree audit and Academic Catalog as a
guide. It is recommended that students and advisors work together each semester to review and
update their advising plan in Planner.

Tips for Assigning Plans in DegreeWorks
Remember to double check each student’s declared major and concentration in the Student Viewsection of DegreeWorks. Make note of the concentration to ensure that you assign the correctplan template.
If a student has two declared majors, assign them the plan template for their Primary Major. If a student is pursuing an education program with a second major, assign them the appropriate
EDUC plan template. You can assign a student more than one plan (which may be a helpful reference for students), but
only one plan can be “active” at a time. A plan being “active” allows BSU to track student activity.

Planner View Types
DegreeWorks offers several options for viewing plans.
The Notes View is the default view for when accessing Planner. It includes key information
provided by departments for each major.
The Audit View allows users to view a plan alongside a students’ degree audit. This differs from
the traditional degree audit because it includes the courses a student plans to take, not just their
current and past courses.
The Calendar View shows each students’ plan by term in an easy to view manner.
The Edit View allows advisors and students to make changes to a plan in Planner. As an advisor,
this is where you will likely spend most of your time, helping students update their plans.
To switch between different views, select the “View” dropdown in the top right of SEP.

Notes View: The Notes View is the default view for both students and advisors when accessing Planner.
This view highlights recommended advising notes from each academic department. As users scroll
through each term, they will see advising notes assigned to courses or to terms.
Notes included on plans may include the following information:
Timeline for completing a course requirement.
Information on when a course is offered (fall or spring semester).
Important catalog or academic department notes.
Reminders to incorporate core curriculum requirements into each term of the plan
Calendar View in DegreeWorks: The Calendar view offers a snapshot of the course requirements for
each semester and academic year. It is the most concise way to view a student’s plan.

Audit View in DegreeWorks: The Audit view provides users with a split-screen view of the DegreeWorks
audit and a students’ plan. Advisors may find this view helpful when looking at required program
courses as they appear both on the audit and plan. Courses that students have listed in their plan but
have not yet taken will appear in blue in the degree audit. This view is especially useful because it runs
an audit not just on the courses a student has taken or is currently taking, but it also includes courses
the student is planning to take. This is helpful for ensuring that students have not missed any
requirements and for estimating a student’s time to graduation.
Edit View in DegreeWorks: The Edit view allows advisors to change and develop a student’s plan based
on the student’s individualized needs. These changes include adding and deleting requirements and
moving courses between semesters.
