THE SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET

WHAT IS A SONNET?

A sonnet has 14 linesCommon themes are love, beauty, politics, and moralityWritten in iambic pentameter

It has three quatrains and a concluding couplet

QUATRAIN

Four lines of poetry, usually with alternating rhyme

• A sonnet has 3 quatrains

Example:

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun,

Coral is far more red, than her lips red,

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun:

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head:
