THE REFORMATION! 500 YEARS! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

The Reformation is no longer portrayed as a singular event of the sixteenth century. While the 16th century reforms were certainly motivated primarily by theological issues, the many discrete dimensions in the social and political spheres of the time contributed greatly to this monumentally transforming event in Western Civilization. Plus all of the personalities that came into play, this time in history was intense. The geo-political and the theological issues of the time were crucial and powerful.

Yes, the political and theological world of that time was ripe for reform

and reform it got in the persons of Martin Luther, Philip Melanchton,

Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, John Knox and even King Henry VIII of

England. The Reformation was an Act of God as history more clearly

shows. The Reformation was a theological and political flow of thoughts

and ideas that originated from the University of Wittenberg.

500 years removed from the Reformation, we as 21st century Christians must be aware of the rudiments of our Christian heritage and faith. Yet, our knowledge of this theology has declined dramatically in our post Reformation era and more recently our post Christian-culture. In general, familiarity with the Bible can no longer be assumed even among church members and among those of you who are reading this article. We can presuppose that the Lutherans out there today have even less familiarity with the history of the church. Where did our doctrine and our confessions come from? The Lutheran church and it's foundation were shaped by the Reformation.

Do you really want to know more? Are you genuinely interested in what

was going on 500 years ago that has brought us to today? During this

past Spring during my Sunday School time I was leading a study on the

Reformation, and I would be more than happy to revisit that study if you

wish to know more. However, if you are NOT inclined to attend a Bible

Study, as many of you are, there is a fantastic reference book available

and a sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. I do have a sample copy that

I would be more than willing to share with you. So many of us take the

Reformation for granted and really do not know what it is all about. Not

to sound crass or hard headed, but as Lutherans we should know more

about the Reformation for our own spiritual journey.

Looking for cards? There is a variety of sympathy, thinking of you, get well, birthday cards and much more available for purchase downstairs next to Grace Hall. Please take a moment to see the wide assortment of cards and napkins displayed.

POP CANs & TABS—Did you know you can save your beverage cans and donate them to the Youth Group here at Grace? But what about the tabs on the top of the can? We collect those also. The tabs are donated to Camp Courageous. So the next time you finish that refreshment, ‘pop’ off the tab, save and bring both the can and the tab to church.

The 2017 Chancel/Altar Flower sign up sheet is available at the Welcome Center. We are asking members to donate bouquets in honor of or in memory of persons or events. Each bouquet is $21 and there will be two bouquets each week. Please sign up for your preferred dates on the flower calendar, put your payment in the envelope provided, and slide the envelope through the mail slot in the secretary‘s door. You may purchase one or both bouquets.

Flower Dates Still Available: October 1st, 8th, & 15th November 19th & 26th

December 3rd, 10th, 17th & 31st

IMPORTANT Deadline for submitting articles for the October Newsletter is September 15th.

We are Lutherans for a reason and a purpose! If you have any questions on the Reformation email them to me or visit with me. May God richly bless you during this most wonderful time in the Lutheran church.

Belize Mission Trip Presentation

During the 2016-2107 school year the Sunday school students, Bible

study participants, Outreach Board, and other members of our congregation provided support for Denise Wold and Allison LaFevers to go to Belize. Over the summer they had the honor of going to Belize on a mission trip. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join them on October 8th, 9:15 a.m., in the church sanctuary to listen to a presentation about the experiences they had while on this mission trip.

Sunday School Offering

Through the months of September through December our Sunday school offering will be going to help Lutheran

South Academy in Houston which was damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The children are looking forward to supporting this school and helping other children, teachers and the community at a time when they need it the most.

Grace Lutheran Women (and Men): We have much to be thankful for as we celebrate LWML Sunday on October 1st! At Grace Lutheran, we are thankful for:

• Activities that have brought women (and sometimes we have men helping – thank you!) together – to work and have time to visit BUT also help raise funds for sharing with our seminaries, and our missionaries, and other organizations – to allow God’s LOVE to be shared!

• Chancel Care is continuing to be organized by women who have been part of LWML outreach; thanks be to God for the service of those who provide set-up and clean-up for communion, care for paraments – at Grace Church, Welton Chapel and the Out-door Chapel

• Funeral Luncheons – we are continuing to offer service to families at the time of the death of a loved one

• Women have continued to meet and make quilts. These will be displayed on October 1st and will be available for purchase. The remaining quilts will be donated to Lutheran World Relief

• Women continue to head up gathering sup-plies and putting together kits (school, lay-ette) that are then delivered for use by Lu-theran World Relief

• The gathering of mites: over $100 million has been gathered since 1942 and used for mission projects at home and abroad (used in 43 countries)!

• Opportunities for Bible study and fellowship continue

Fall Lutheran World Relief Pick-up will be OCT 21,2017 from 8:30 a.m. – noon at Trinity Lutheran School, Cedar Rapids, IA

NEWS FLASH: There will be a bazaar – on Nov. 18th. Lunch is part of the planning but more details will be shared later!

Expressing Your Thanks to God

How are you saying THANKS to God for all

that He has entrusted to you? When you think of

Christian stewardship, you probably think of what

you place in the offering plate. I hope that you are

showing your gratitude through generous giving, but

what about using your talents for God through the

church?

All of us, to one degree or another, have the

ability to do things that can be of benefit to our

church. In other words—after you have heard the

sermon and participated in Holy Communion—now

it’s time to show your thanks by doing some work

for the Lord.

You may ask: “Why should I?” Think for a

moment about our situation. Many do not realize

that sin is a big problem and obstacle in this world.

We do. Thanks to the Word of God, we have been

brought to the realization that forgiveness is needed

every day. Scripture also tells us that salvation is a

free gift that we can’t earn. That fact should make

us more eager to say thanks to God Who has saved

and freed us from eternal prison and gives us a fresh

start every day.

As stewards, we realize that our talents and abilities

are gifts from God that are to be used in His service.

When we use our gifts for God’s glory, we are ac-

knowledging that

He is the provider, and we express our thanks

for what He gives to us. Some of the tasks that we

can do around the church are fairly obvious, such as

being kind and courteous to fellow worshippers and

visitors, giving words of encouragement, singing in

the choir, ushering, teaching Sunday school, serving

on committees or boards, washing the windows, etc.

Check with us in the church office to see how you

can use your gifts.

There are many ways of expressing thanks to the

Lord. We hope that one of the ways that you will

say thanks is through using your talents at our

church.

Closing Thought

We can live one of two ways—with or without

Christ. We can live without Christ, living just for

ourselves, exalting worldly pleasures and success, or

we can live with Christ, exalting Him as the risen

Lord. We can squander our talents, waste our time,

and spend our money foolishly, or we can use these

God-given gifts to His glory as they benefit others.

“Each of us will give an account of himself to God,”

we read in Romans 14:12. Let us be among those

who hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful

servant!” (Matthew 25:21).

God must work in us if He is to work through us.
