A Man Called Ove
At first sight Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest
man you will ever meet, a curmudgeon with staunch
principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People
think him bitter, and he thinks himself surrounded
by idiots.”
The book is an uplifting exploration of the unrelia-
bility of first impressions and a gentle reminder
that life is sweeter when it is shared with other
people.
Grace Church will be support-
ing EMMA NORTON SER-
VICES during the month of
September through a paper
products drive. There will be
containers in the narthex to
drop off your items. Always needed include:
bathroom tissue, napkins, paper towels, facial tissue,
garbage bags (all sizes), paper plates, cups, bowls
and feminine hygiene products.

SECONDHAND LIONS
For 14-year old Walter, his great uncles' farm in
rural Texas is the last place on earth he wants to
spend the summer. Dumped off by his mother, Mae,
in the middle of nowhere with two crazy old men and
the promise that she'll come back for him, Walter
doesn't know what to believe in. Eccentric and gruff,
Hub and Garth McCaan are rumored to have been
bank robbers, mafia hit men and/or war criminals in
their younger days. The truth is elusive, although
they do seem to have an endless supply of cash.

Adult Choir: All High School students and adults are welcome to join the choir!
We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and will be singing at the 10:00 a.m.
services. Rehearsals have begun but there still is time to join. We begin singing on Sunday,
September 10th. The director is Paige Macklin.
Special Music: We encourage all youth and adults who sing or play an instrument to contribute to special
music at Grace. This is usually performed during the offertory at the 10:00 service. For more information
and to set up performance times contact Paige Macklin or Marilyn Oliphant (accompanist) .
I don’t know about all of you, but I have had a great summer. God’s world is beautiful, and for me, summer is
the very best of times. Now it’s time to put life back into a regular pattern and enjoy growing in Christ and
returning to regular schedule starting with Coming Together Sunday and Wednesday night programming.
Sunday School for all ages resumes September 10th. Registration forms are on the table in the Narthex.
It will be a special day for the children pre K-6th grade as we celebrate God’s beautiful world and a beautiful
piñata. Children’s classes will return to Genesis this fall as we start a three- year study of the Bible. Read
along with the kids each month. See below for the schedule.
Wednesday night supper resumes September 13th with new cooks in the kitchen. Join together for a good
hearty family friendly meal and Christian fellowship most Wednesdays until mid-May. Lynn Kilian and Anna
Kjesbo will head up the kitchen menu this year. On the menu for September 13th is Hamburgers and Tacos
takes care of the 20th. See the bulletin for the items to be served for the remainder of the month. We
can use some weekly volunteers to help clean up after meals.
Wednesday Christian Education for adults will continue with Pastor Jen leading a small group while Children
and youth grades k-8 are invited to attend Mission Adventures and choir programming.
Youth Choir and God’s Kids with Miss Paige starts singing September 13th. Mission Adventures will start off
the year with a games night September 13th. September 20th and 27th we will “Dare to be a Daniel” as we
look at how God uses bad situations to spread the news of love to all from the Old Testament times on
through today. Mission Adventures sometimes taste food from different places and dishes from different
time periods in history. Please let Rosalie know if your child has a known food allergy.

COMING IN OCTOBER
Our focus will be the newest DVD presentation by Adam Hamilton, entitled
The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul. He is the popular and
respected pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas and the
author of a number of religious books. The study lasts seven to eight
weeks. A study book is not essential, but is very helpful. The cost through Cokesbury is $12.79, but you may
want to shop around. Make sure to purchase the adult version, because there are two others. The class be-
gins at 9:00 a.m. in Room 6, just to the left of the sanctuary. All are welcome! If you need to arrive late or
leave early because of other church responsibilities, there’s no problem. There is discussion following the
video, but participation is totally voluntary, so no pressure. If you have questions or would like more infor-
mation, please contact me at 952-226-3547 or [email protected]
A HELPING HAND
Would you be willing to help out with the children’s and youth programming for the nursery-8th grade this
year? In addition to Sunday School and VBS, we need extra hands and substitutes for different activities
through out the year. From the nursery to the Christmas Pageant, Easter egg hunts, parties and project
prep, adults are needed! Contact Rosalie to see what you can do to grow our young to adulthood in Christ.

Why I Serve – by MaryAlice Langevin
When I serve it causes personal growth that can be very rewarding and life changing. It allows me to feel more
connected with Christ and the people around me. Serving is so much bigger then ourselves. As Christians
we should serve Christ and serving at church in a community filled with people who share your same be-
liefs makes it easy to devote your time. My family really enjoys our time at Grace and spending time with
our extended family at church. When you are part of a family, each person needs to pitch in and help be-
cause not one person can do it alone. This holds true especially when your family is small. I grew up
Methodist and watched my parents serve at our home church in Anoka. My husband and I believe that
role modeling to our children is important so we lead by example, just as my parents did many years ago. I
serve for my relationship with Christ, for myself, for my family and to contribute to a community.
One of my favorite pictures from elementary school was taken with my first grade study buddy. I was a fifth
grader at the time and even though I was four years older than her, you’d never know it by the picture. She
and I were the same height (she may have even been a hair or two taller), we wore similar Disney Princess
shirts and both had our hair in high ponytails. I don’t remember all the details of everything we worked on
throughout the year…most likely reading, writing and arithmetic…but I do remember seeing her in the grocery
store, or out at the park and feeling a thrill of excitement as this ‘little’ girl recognized me out in the commu-
nity as someone she knew and could ‘look up’ to.
While we may not have study buddies in the church, we still have an incredible opportunity to cultivate rela-
tionships with each other as we live, worship, care and share together. On Sunday August 20th, our son, Paul,
was baptized. He has been claimed by God with an open invitation to live into that identity throughout his en-
tire life. You all have made promises to him and to each other — to support, encourage, challenge and nourish
each other in your walks of faith. This fall, we’ll once again be starting up Sunday School, Choir and Wednes-
day night programming after Coming Together Sunday on September 10th. Where will you be plugging in to
grow in your faith and engage in mission and ministry this fall?
If none of our current or upcoming groups, studies, classes or activities appeal to you, or don’t work with your
schedule — let Pastor Jen know! We’ll work together and see what we can get started so every member is en-
gaged and growing in their faith!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Jen
COMING TOGETHER SUNDAY
Come join the celebration as we gather from all the places we have been over the summer. Coming together
Sunday is a great time to catch up with old friends, meet some new ones and celebrate the gathering of
God’s people. There will be worship, great music, blessing of the backpacks**, refreshments and a pot-luck
dinner with ice cream cones following the second service (please bring a salad, or side dish to share). If
that’s not enough, there will be activities for the kids, and the chance to learn about
and register for Sunday school, fall classes and volunteer opportunities. Come join the
celebration.
**The start of a new school year brings new opportunities and adventures. For some
students, this will be their first year either in school, or in a new school. Others will
be returning to familiar places and routines. As students, teachers and parents gear up
for the new year, we want to pray for you and send you off with a blessing. Bring your
backpack to either service and join us for this new tradition.
