NICOLA KIRKBRIDE: Fashion has always been an interest of mine, even when I was as young as 7 I was making my own clothes to wear. At school, a career in fashion was never really seen as an option and after
JOANNE MCGILLIVRAY: How did you find your way into fashion?
finishing at 17 I took a year out to decide what I wanted to do. I spent most of that year working in All Saints where I decided fashion was the industry for me, but decided to focus on the business side of things where I study Fashion Management at RGU in Aberdeen.
Why did you start using lookbook.nu? I started using Lookbook around about the same time as I started my blog. As well as posting my own looks, I love looking at what other people have posted too. It’s great to see so what everyone is wearing all around the world. It’s such a great source of inspiration and has led me to some great blogs.
You have over 2980 fans on Lookbook.nu. Did you ever think your style would become so popular? I was so taken aback at the amount of people that liked my looks. I get a lot of lovely comments from people all over the world which is really encouraging. I’m just glad that people can find inspiration from what I wear.
Who is your style icon and why? I don’t really have one style icon: I would say I’m inspired by a number of different people in fashion. I really like the way that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen dress, there’s no question that they’re style icons especially the hobo chic look Mary-Kate carries off. I also love Elin Kling’s sense of style: she nails it every time. I love the clean cut approach she takes. She really got me into tailoring.
If you had any budget, what would be your must have item? I don’t know if I could pick just one thing! Anything from Balmain.
Favourite fashion designer?There are a few favourites, including Alexan-der Wang¸ Olivier Rousteing, Phillip Lim, Iris van Herpen and the late Alexander Mc-Queen
Does your style come effortlessly or does it take you hours to get ready? It depends on what mood i’m in. Most of the time I get ready pretty quickly but there are days where I wake up and hate everything in my wardbrobe. That’s when I decide I need something new!
Favourite Fashion Magazine?Nylon, Dazed, Elle or Vogue. I’m sorry, I cant pick just one!

Describe your style in 3 words...DefinitelyNotPreppy
To trend or not to trend?I prefer to do my own thing and tend go for styles that I like and that I know will suit me, however I like to pay attention to the latest trends and appreciate them. For example I love Neon just now, like bright yellow clean cut shirts and colour blocking, but I don’t know if I’d wear anything like that myself. My style is a little bit too grungy....
Zara or Topshop?Zara.
If you could live in any other era which one would it be and why? Ohhh that is a tricky one, im thinking the 60’s or 70’s.... I love the whole Twiggy, Biba, Ossie Clark era. There were so many interesting fashion subcultures in that time. I bet no-one was going around head-to-toe in tracksuits back then!
Do you feel at all ‘disadvantaged’ studying fashion in Scotland rather than London? I wouldn’t say disadvantaged, but maybe slightly removed. For example if we wanted to do a placement in London it would have been so much harder to try and find accommo-dation and things for the period of time so I ended up doing mine here. I think studying in London would have been slight-ly tricky, not to mention expensive, when all my family live up here in Scotland. We’ve had quite a few trips down over the past couple of years, but when i graduate i will have all the time in the world to soak up London Fashion.

If you could change anything about Scottish Fashion, what would it be? I’m not sure if I would, I like the exclusivity of something that is ‘made in Scotland’ and the appeal it has to our heritage. We are well known for fine fabrics such as cashmere and the quality of our garments and that’s never a bad thing! Designers such as Pringle really are setting the stakes and showing how innovative and fashion forward traditional and heritage brands can be.
Top Tip?I like to make sure my outfits are wellbalanced by getting the right ratio of textures and structures. For example if I was wearing a draped jersey skirt I would need to toughen it up with a structured leather jacket or some kind of clinched belt. I’m strange like that. Similarly if i was wearing a chiffon blouse I would need to incorporate some tougher textures to create a better balance.
Recently added on your Ipod?Benjamin Francis Lefwich... not too recent but one of my recent favourites for those chilled out mellow moments.
Where do you look for inspiration?I like to get inspiration from everywhere: traditional media, the internet, art work and even hardware shops. I was in B&Q the other day and picked up some lovely new industrial materials for jewellery!
Whats next?I graduate in June, so after that I’m going to find a job anywhere but here (hopefully)! I would love to work in London or Canada (I fell in love with Vancouver) or setting my sights really high- New York, but i think that’s a few years off yet!
Do you think cities like Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh couldbecome ‘fashion forward’ cities? I think Edinburgh as the capital definitely has capabilities to become a fashion forward city but places such as Aberdeen tend to be overshadowed by the Oil Industry, so I think in those cases it would be slightly trickier.
