After talking with God at the

burning bush, Moses went back to

Egypt. He knew that God would help

him talk to Pharaoh. His brother

Aaron went along to help him.

Moses and Aaron went to

Pharaoh. “God says ‘Let My people

go!’” they told him.

Pharaoh didn’t know the God of Moses. He would not let the people go.

God Plagues theEgyptians

Exodus 4:27–11:12Lesson

Pharaoh said, “I don’t know your

God, and I will not let the Israelites

go.” The Israelites were his slaves, and

he did not want them to leave.

But Pharaoh did not know how

great God was. God sent ten

different plagues to Egypt. God told

Moses and Aaron what to do for each

plague. “Stretch out your rod over

the river,” God said. When Moses did

that, all the water in

Egypt became

blood. It was

not fit to

drink.

Next God sent frogs into Egypt.

There were frogs all

over, even in the

cooking pots and pans

in the palace. But

Pharaoh refused

to let the people

go.

The third

plague was lice,

crawling over

everything.

Then the flies flew in. They were

all over Egypt. The

Egyptians couldn’t

keep the flies out of

their houses.

During the fifth

plague all the cattle in Egypt grew

sick and died.

But even after all these terrible

things, Pharaoh still did not let the

Israelites go. Instead, he made them

work harder than

before.

Next Moses

took ashes

and threw them in the

air. Soon all the

Egyptians had sores

on their bodies.

For the seventh

plague, God sent hail on Egypt. The

hail smashed all the plants. But when

the hail stopped, Pharaoh was

still too proud to let the

Israelites go.

Next God sent locusts that ate

the grass and plants

that had been

smashed by the

hail. There was

nothing green left

growing in Egypt.

After the locusts left, God sent a

thick darkness. For three days it was

so dark no one could see anything.

Everyone stayed at home.

After the darkness, God told

Moses, “I will send one more plague.

It will be the plague of death. After

that, Pharaoh will let you go.”

God also told Moses to tell the

Israelites to get ready to leave Egypt.

The people of Israel lived in the

wilderness for forty years. They

moved from place to place as God led

them in the cloud.

At one place where they camped

there was no water. The people were

upset. They came to Moses and

Aaron. “We wish we were dead,” they

grumbled. “Why did you bring us

here to die?”

God told Moses what to do. “Get

your rod, and take the people with

you,” God said. “Speak to that rock

over there, and water will come out.

There will be enough for all the

people and their animals too.”

Moses and all the people went to

the rock. But Moses did something

wrong. Instead of talking to the rock

as God had said he should, Moses hit

the rock. He hit the rock twice.

Water came pouring out, and

everyone had enough to drink.

But God wasn’t happy. “Because you

didn’t obey Me,” He told Moses, “you

will not be able to go into Canaan.”

The Israelites did not always

remember to be thankful. They

complained about the manna God

sent. “We hate this bread,” they said.

God wasn’t pleased. Poisonous

snakes slithered into the camp. Many

of the Israelites died of snakebites.

The people were sorry. They told

Moses, “We sinned against you and

against God. Pray to God to make

the snakes go away.”

Moses prayed for the people, and

God told him what to do. “Make a

brass snake and put it on a pole,”

God said. “If anyone who has been

bitten looks up at this snake, he

won’t die.”

Moses made a brass snake and set

it on a pole. God healed those who

looked at the metal snake on the

pole.

After forty years, all the

disobedient adults died. It was time

for Moses to die and for Joshua to

lead the Israelites into the Promised

Land of Canaan.
