UNIT 4

Giving Directions  When going to a new place, we find ourselves reading signs along the way and following                               directions and instructions given to us. But what happens when we are the ones giving                             directions? Developing your skill in giving directions is a way of enhancing your                         communication skills. When people ask you for directions to places or how to do a task, it is                                   important to use the right words for you to be understood. In this unit, you will be able to give                                       oral and written directions using signal words.

Objectives

In this unit, you should be able to:

● give oral directions; and  ● write 2-3 step directions using signal words.

Lesson 1: Oral Directions

Has anyone asked you for directions to a familiar place?                   Giving clear directions is very important, and if your                 directions are unclear, it will result in confusion and                 misunderstanding.

Warm-up!

Role-Playing Activity:  With a partner, arrange the following lines in the correct order to create a conversation. Then, present this dialogue in class.

It’s in North Avenue.  Go straight on and take the third left into Quezon Avenue. Go past the hospital and turn left again. The train station will be on your right.

Goodbye.  Excuse me. Where’s the train station?

How do I get to North Avenue?

Thank you very much. Have a nice day. Goodbye.

What do you notice about this dialogue? What are the words used in giving directions?

 Learn About It!

When a map is unavailable, the most convenient thing to do when you are lost or when you are looking for a place is to ask people for directions. But if you are the one being asked to give oral directions, it is necessary that you know how to give directions properly.      When giving oral directions, it is important that you know the basic commands or signal words that you can use.

Here are examples on how to use the basic commands in giving directions:

Person A: Hello! Do you know where the supermarket is? Person B: Hi, yes. Just turn left at that street, and you’ll find the supermarket opposite the gas station.

Person A: Hi, miss. Can you help me? Do you know where I can find this coffee shop? Person B: Sure! Turn right at Bayani Street, and go straight ahead. It’s beside the pizza store. Person A: Thank you! Person B: You’re welcome!

Person A: How do I get to the barangay station? Person B: Go straight ahead and go past the bakery. You can find the barangay station at the corner of Gumamela Street and Sampaguita Street.

Lesson 2: Written Directions

An important aspect to consider in giving directions is                 being precise in expressing yourself. A simple way to be                   precise in what you want to say is to write it out.

Warm-up!

Triad Activity:  With your group members, get a clean piece of paper and follow the directions below.              What have you drawn? Are the directions clear or confusing? Share your thoughts in class.

Learn About It!

After being able to give people directions to places using                   appropriate commands or signal words, it is time to learn                   how to give directions or instructions on how to do certain                     things in written form.   Written directions are directions or instructions that can               be read. They are composed of pure written words, which                   are combined with matching pictures or illustrations.    A procedure is a step-by-step series of actions to                 accomplish a task. For example, there is a procedure for                   baking a cake and for assembling Lego toys. For people to                     finish a task perfectly, the procedure itself must be properly                   sequenced and clear in direction.  In writing procedures, imperative verbs are often used.               These verbs are used to make imperative sentences or                 sentences that give commands. Imperative verbs are usually in the base form.  Here are some examples of instructions with imperative verbs:

    Peel and pit five avocados.

Pour the mixture into the pan and bake for 45 to 55 minutes.

Also, in writing clear directions or procedures, you need to use signal words.

Sequence Signal Words Beginning  Middle  End

First   Next  At last To start  After / After that  Lastly To begin  Then  Finally

Second / Third...      Here are examples of procedures containing signal words.

 How to Bake Brownies

To start, melt the chocolate and butter and stir the mixture until smooth for 10 minutes.                               Next, prepare an 8x8-inch pan lined with parchment paper. Then, remove the chocolate                         mixture from the heat and add the remaining ingredients: vanilla, eggs, sugar, cocoa                         powder, and flour. After that, pour the mixture into the pan and bake for 45 to 55                                 minutes. Finally, allow the brownies to cool and slice it into squares.

 How to Make Lemonade

First, add water to a kettle and bring to a boil. Second, place sugar                           in a heat-proof container. Third, squeeze juice from the lemons                   and set aside. Fourth, add boiling water to sugar and stir carefully                       until well dissolved. Fifth, add cold water and lemon juice to the                       sugar and water mixture. Sixth, refrigerate until cool. Finally, add                   slices of lemon and ice and serve.
