Close Reading: Watch the Close Reading Video and read along. Last time we looked at finding the main idea of the text, today you will be answering questions about how the text works;
1. What language features does the author use to help the reader with imagery? (Eg: similes, metaphors, vivid (rich) descriptive language)
2. Is this a factual piece of text or is it a person’s opinion? Does this make it fiction?
3. What words or phrases grab your attention? How?

Poetry
ELEMENTS OF POETRY: Just think about these questions...
What are the reasons that people might write and read poetry?
What comes to mind when you think about 'the rules of poetry?'
What are stanzas?
A stanza is another name for a verse in poetry.
In a rhyming couplet a stanza consists of two lines.
In a quatrain, the stanza has four lines.
Read the poem 'The Moa - Truly a Beast of Modern Times'.
Note that each section is broken into stanzas.
Can you find the simile in the first stanza? Highlight it.
Read page 35 to see the rest of the poem BUT it isn't broken into stanzas.
See if you can work out where the stanza would start and end.
It is written in quatrains.
Can you please rule a line between each stanza?
HYPERBOLE.
This is when we exaggerate to make something seem bigger than it really is. Sometimes we use it when
speaking when we want to make a point. eg. The mountains were as high as the sky. The sun was so hot we all
cooked!
Rewrite these sentences using hyperbole.
The dog's fur was thick.
The man was tall.
The cakes were stale.
Their mother was very angry.
The children jumped for joy.
The class was boring.
The children ate a lot at the party.
His motorbike is fast.
The wrestler was very strong.
Here is a nursery rhyme that uses hyperbole.
There once was an old woman toss'd up in a basket
Nineteen times as high as the moon,
Where she was going I couldn't but ask her,
For in her hand she carried a broom.
What is the hyperbole in this rhyme?
How do you know?
Write your own poem using Hyperbole.
Thursday Poetry:
Write an answer to all of the questions asked. ELEMENTS OF POETRY Poetry: What are the elements of poetry? Read the Powerpoint called 'Elements of Poetry'
1. What does it mean to be a fixed verse poem? Watch the video: https://education.abc.net.au/home#!/media/2118001/rhythm-and-metre 2. What gives a poem rhythm? 3. What is iambic pentameter? 4. Why do poets like writing rhythmic poetry? Reflection: 5. Did you like the previous poem 'The Poet's Lament'? Why or why not? 6. Can you think of a time in your life when you thought a particular activity was a waste of time? 7. Who might this poem appeal to and why? RHYMING COUPLETS Rhyming couplets consist of several verses that can tell a story. Each verse consists of two lines AND the last word in each line rhymes. Each line should ideally have the same number of syllables. eg. Look at me, I can ski. Mrs Harrington likes chocolate cake but she never has the time to bake. She spends the day on her laptop, Not even having time to mop. Complete the activities writing a list of rhyming words.
red bake night Dad rain
Write your own rhyming couplet… Complete the couplets
I went to town with mum today
My cat chased a mouse
Walking down the hall last night
Rugby is the sport for me
A hamburger I’d like to eat
Think of something that happened at home or school last night. Can you write a rhyming couplet about it? Now try to add another couplet to add to this story. Think of a title for your rhyming couplets and write it here.
FRIDAY Poetry:
Read the Poem: In my eyes
Answer the comprehension questions.
In your own words, what is this poem about?
What words does the author use to describe the secret? Why do you think the author uses these words?
There's no one else there quite like you, don't hide underneath a disguise. In your own words, describe what this line in
the poem is trying to convey.
How do you think the author feels about her mother's secret? Explain your answer.
In your own words, explain what the secret is. Why does a secret get whispered?
Why do you think the author called the poem In My Eyes?
If you had a special secret, who would you choose to tell? Why?
Is this text intended to inform, persuade or entertain you? How do you know?
