What to bring or remember:• You will need a separate notebook (or separate

sections of a multi-subject notebook) for each of the following areas:

• Language Arts (writing, grammar)• Reading (literature, vocabulary)

*If you would prefer to use a three-ring binder, that is fine. There is a three-hole punch in the room for you to borrow.

Make your paper look nice!

• Use one-inch margins on assignments you hand in. For a heading, include your name (your full last name, too), the date, and the name of the assignment or creative title. Cut the notebook fringe off before handing in the assignment. You may type assignments. Use a 12-point font in Times New Roman and double space the paragraphs.

Other things to bring:

• Don’t forget your pen and pencil. Sharpen your pencil during homeroom period or immediately before class begins. Assignments, tests, and quizzes are written in pencil or pen (dark blue or black ink). It is preferred that essays be typed, but pen is fine. When typing or writing in ink, please do it on one side of the paper.

• You will need a folder for hand-outs/worksheets.

Do I get a textbook?

If you receive a textbook this year, it should be covered.

Words a teacher NEVER wants to hear: “I have nothing to do.”

• Always bring a novel or some other scholarly reading book (nonfiction, collection of short stories, a book of poetry, etc.) to class so that you have something to read when you finish a test/quiz or class work early. Magazines are fine, but reading a textbook, catalogue, or your agenda do not qualify as “after test” or “waiting for others to finish” reading materials. You will not do homework at this time. There are books to borrow in the back in the room. Ask to borrow before class has started. You will not have an opportunity to go to your locker if you have forgotten your book. (You may check out a classroom book/magazine. Just ask permission.)

Does this work count?• HOMEWORK/CLASS WORK/MAKE-UP WORK: Homework

and class work count for one-third (1/3) of your final grade for each term. Tests, quizzes, and certain essays (you will be told in advance) will count for two-thirds (2/3)of your final grade for the term. Everything counts! Late work will earn you a ZERO, however you should still do it for preparation and turn it in. In the event that you are absent, you must see Mrs. Berthiaume immediately. You will never be “chased” to get your work done. A satisfactory date for making up missed assignments and tests/quizzes will be arranged. It is a good idea to check the homework site (see #2 above) when you have been absent.

Important classroom information:

• Classroom rules are visibly posted in the room.• No one leaves the room for the first 20 minutes of class,

unless the nurse or another staff member needs to see you.• Up to three people per period may use the lavatory, one at

a time. • For the lavatory and other areas of the building, you must

write your destination, the time you left, and the time you returned in the sign-out book. Do not forget to take the pass.

NURSE VISITS

• You need a handwritten pass (with a staff signature and time you left the room) to visit the nurse’s office.

What’s important? Everything!

• Copy ALL notes from the board. Do not pick and choose which ones you think are important. THEY ARE ALL IMPORTANT. Also, be sure to copy the homework assignment EXACTLY how it is written on the board.

And finally…

• We are always looking for creative ideas, so please share them with the class!
