Second Grade News January 2016 Language Arts We are finishing ELA Unit 3, and will begin Unit 4. In Unit 4, we are focusing on noting different characters’ points of view in a story, identifying the author’s point of view and how he/she supports this point of view, and describing the author’s main purpose for writing a story. We will continue to write narrative and informational/explanatory pieces and focus on introducing a topic and stating a conclusion. We are finishing ELA Unit 3, and will begin

Unit 4. In Unit 4, we are focusing on

noting different characters’ points of view in a story, identifying the author’s

point of view and how he/she supports

this point of view, and describing the

author’s main purpose for writing a story.

We will continue to write narrative and informational/explanatory pieces and

Science/Social Studies We will learn about the life and leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his influence in our country.

We continue our S.S. unit on Geography:

• Landforms

• Bodies of Water

• Continents/Country/State/City

• Compass Rose/hemispheres

and our Science unit on Biodiversity:

• Plants and animals in different habitats

o Forests, grasslands, mountains, polar regions, deserts, wetlands,

rainforests

• Food chains/webs, ecosystems

• Relationship between humans and our

environment

Math We are working on Unit 9 (Using

Mental Math to Subtract):

• Subtract multiples of 10

from 2-digit and 3-digit

numbers

• Subtract multiples of 100

from 3-digit numbers

• Solve word problems

using reasoning and

looking for patterns

And Unit 10 (Arrays):

• Columns & rows

• Repeated addition

• Partitioning rectangles

into equal parts

Music Our 2nd graders are

working hard on their musical, “Friendly

Neighborhood Helpers”

with Ms. Johnson!

Technology

We continue to work on Lexia and

Dreambox in the computer lab. In addition, we use Typing Agent,

RenPlace for AR quizzes and Math

Facts in a Flash, Raz-Kids, and

Tenmarks! Students are also using

Glogster to create online multimedia

posters!
