With all the quality that you have come to expect from a Melton-created curriculum, this course features modern and classic commentary by sages, scholars and artists as well as methods of understanding commentary and midrash. Exodus II—Revelation and Revolution follows the development of the emerging Jewish nation from their awe-inspiring encounter at Mount Sinai through the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness. The high points of divine revelation in “Ten Commandments,“ “Encountering God,” and “Face to Face with God” are sharply contrasted with the low points of the “Golden Calf: Revolt or Reversion.” The text addresses some of the specific laws and regulations that were to become part of Jewish living as well as their meaning, purpose, and relevance to our lives today. No prior courses or knowledge necessary to take this course.

JERUSALEM: HISTORY & LORE Instructor: Paul Azaroff, Master Teacher

Since King David’s capture of the city in the 11th Century BCE, Jerusalem has been a holy city for Jews. Later it became so for Christians and Muslims as well. Over the centuries, it has been conquered by many world powers including the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantine Christians, Arab Moslems, Mamelukes, Crusaders, Ottomon Turks, and the British, effectively embodying much of the history of the Western world. Finally under Jewish sovereignty in 1948 (the New City) and in 1967 (the Old City), Jerusalem has been and continues to be an important symbol for Jews and people everywhere. Together we will explore her 3000 years through the study of biblical and rabbinic literature, historical and scholarly documents, legends and stories, poetry, music and modern texts.

* MELTON-CREATED SCHOLAR’S CURRICULUM JEWISH DENOMINATIONS:

Addressing the Challenges of Modernity Instructor: Rabbi Fred Klein, Greater Miami Jewish Federation

One of the most fascinating developments of the modern age is the explosion of diversity in contemporary Judaism and the growth of “Jewish Denominations.” We will examine and analyze the particular forms of Jewish identity and religious expression against the backdrop of dramatic political and social changes that have challenged humanity over the past 300 years. This course offers extensive insights into the historical and ideological development of the major movements, as well as the impact of such issues as gender, assimila-tion, Israel, and post-denominationalism on the Jewish people worldwide. We will also examine how denomi-nations influence the way we think and act as Jews as well as consider what future the various denominations have (if any!) in the years ahead.

BEGINNER’S HEBREW & SIDDUR

Instructor: Paul Azaroff, Master Teacher If you’ve never been able to learn Hebrew or weren’t motivated by other teachers, Paul will inspire and instruct you as you’ve never been before. The Fall beginner class is designed for people who don’t know any Hebrew or who read haltingly and want to learn to read with more fluidity. The goal of this course is to introduce you to the Hebrew used in the prayer book (Siddur). By familiarizing yourself with a basic recognition of frequently used Hebrew roots along with common prefixes, suffixes and infixes, soon you WILL be able to translate passages from the Siddur and thus, understand the words and the beautiful liturgical messages we pray. Rabbi Efrat Zarren-Zohar attests: “In one year, Paul’s students went from not recognizing letters in the first class to being able to actually translate Hebrew sentences and prayers in the last class. I’ve never seen anything like it. Paul simply performs miracles in his teaching of Hebrew!” Classes will meet on alternating Wednesdays. Contact the Melton office to arrange for Paul to assess your Hebrew abilities.

MAIMONIDES: HIS PHILOSOPHY & IMPACT

Instructor: Dr. Zion Zohar, Kabbalah and Philosophy Institute Rabbi Moses Ben Maimon (1135-1204, known as the Rambam or Maimonides) is a towering figure within medieval Judaism, who made a major impact on Jewish and Christian philosophy among other areas of life. Abraham Joshua Heschel once noted: “If one did not know that Maimonides was the name of a person, one would assume it was the name of a university!” The writings and achievements of Maimonides seem to cover an incomprehensibly large number of activities. He was the first to write a systematic codex of the entire corpus of Jewish law—The Mishneh Torah. He produced the greatest systematic philosophical explication of the Jewish faith--The Guide to the Perplexed. If that weren’t enough, he also wrote a commentary on the en-tire Mishnah, served as physician to the sultan of Egypt, wrote many books on medicine, and was the leader of the Egyptian Jewish community. In this course we will focus mainly on his philosophy, in particular The Guide to the Perplexed, and explore his contribution to Judaism and world religion.

THE WORLD OF CHAZAL Instructor: Rabbi Baruch Plotkin, University of Miami Hillel This course will be an exploration of the life, times and wisdom of a few exceptional rabbinic sages. Our rabbis, known as Chazal ( ל"חז ) - - an acronym for Hakhameinu Zikhronam Liv'rakha or in English "our Sages, may their memory be blessed") are the architects of much of what we know as Judaism today. Together we will survey an array of rabbinic sages from the Mishna, Talmud, and other rabbinic literature, stretching from Second Temple days until the 6th century CE. In getting to know some of the key rabbis from our past, we will, through an analysis of their lives and thinking, discover the timeless wisdom of the Torah and how it im-pacts upon our own lives. No prior courses or knowledge necessary to take this course.

WALKING WITH THE JEWISH CALENDAR: Rhythms of Jewish Living Renewed

Instructor: Rabbi David H. Auerbach, D.D., Founding Rabbi Bet Shira Congregation

In the introduction to his seminal work The Sabbath, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel describes Judaism as “a religion of time aiming at the sanctification of time.” He went on to say “Judaism teaches us to be attached to holiness in time, to be attached to sacred events, to learn to consecrate sanctuaries that emerge from the magnificent stream of the year.” Based on the curriculum developed by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Stud-ies at the American Jewish University, this course focuses on an in-depth discussion of the holy days and festivals in Judaism that builds on and goes beyond the Rhythms of Jewish Living Melton course. Together we will explore: How did they develop? Why do we observe them? What do they tell us about the Jewish people’s values and beliefs? What deeper meaning can they add to our lives?

JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM: "All in the Family?"

Instructor: Dr. Marsha B. Cohen, Master Teacher Dr. Cohen holds the Deborah and Michael Troner Endowed Faculty Chair

Although Christianity and Islam are often referred to as "daughter" religions, they are more analogous to "daughters-in-law" of Jewish tradition. This course will trace the origins and evolution of key religious doc-trines and core theological beliefs within Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and examine how their adherents have interacted, cooperated, clashed, borrowed from one another, and reviled each other over the course of the past 2000 years. We will compare various approaches within all three faiths to a wide variety of subjects and also explore how each faith views the limits on authoritative interpretation of scripture; sectarianism; conversion requirements; attitudes towards infidels (non-members of the religious community) and heretics (members of the community who challenge its norms and doctrines); demands for religious reform; and the modern resurgence of fundamentalism in all three faiths. Texts will include excerpts from the TaNaKh, the New Testament, the Qu'ran and various medieval and modern commentaries.

THE PRAYER SERVICE: Exploring its Beliefs, Uncovering its Secrets

Instructor: Rabbi Haskell Bernat, D.Min., D.D.

Worship is at the very heart of the religious life; to know the ways of worship of a people is indeed to know the people. More than the texts of Scriptures -- which may compete with and contradict each other -- the words of worship are a statement of the commitments and aspirations of the group, its hopes for itself and for the world. This course will take the traditional components of Jewish worship and uncover their layers of meaning from the simple to the mystical, as well as their underground debates with hostile religions. After examining the structure and meaning of Jewish worship, we will explore among other elements: The Shema and its Blessings--does God speak to us?; The Tefillah --18 blessings and one curse; The Morning Blessings--the natural, the formal and the misogynist; The Torah Service--surprising differences between Ashkenazim & Sephardim; The Alenu and Kaddish- a service complete; Wine and Bread – from gifts to the gods to gifts from God; Birkat HaMazon--how grace after meals shapes the psyche of the Jew.
