#GRIN2016 @AusIndCentre

Thank youThe AIC team is very appreciative of the input and enthusiasm of all those who have informed the development of the

inaugural GRIN Program. This includes members of the AIC Board, our government partners in Australia and Indonesia, the AIC Operations Committee and institutional experts who have contributed directly to the design and development of the program. We would like to thank Professor Michael Barber who advocated for the AIC to implement a program

focussed at research graduates across the research program. Thanks also goes to the research coordinators and managers in our partner institutions and the supervisors for their support and to the graduate researchers themselves

for their commitment to participation in the program.

GRADUATE RESEARCH  INTERDISCIPLINARY NETWORK

25 NOV – 2 DEC, 2016

ABOUT

The  Australia‐Indonesia  Centre’s  research  program  aims  to  deliver  impact  through

addressing  shared  challenges  facing  Australia  and  Indonesia.  We  do  this  through

collaboration  across  research  institutions  and  by  bringing  researchers  together with

government, business and community stakeholders.

Within  the  research  program,  the  development  of  graduate  and  early  career  researcher

contributions  is  a  key  component  for  establishing  a  sustainable  and  engaged network of

expertise at the regional level which has potential for global reach.

In  addition  to  supporting  capacity  demands  to  address  long‐term  challenges  through

innovation,  the  national  innovation  systems  in  both  countries  will  continue  to  demand

research graduates with capabilities to support future strategic leadership through effective

international  collaboration  and  the  ability  to  translate  research  outputs  into  economic,

environmental and societal benefit.

To address the challenge of establishing a sustainable and engaged network that captures

the  opportunities  provided  by  our  respective  Governments’  demands  and  support  for

innovation,  the  AIC  is  piloting  the  facilitation  of  a  Graduate  Research  Interdisciplinary

Network (GRIN).

The GRIN initiative will establish informal connections across the Centre’s Research Clusters

through early  career  researchers,  research  students,  their  supervisors and others working

across  the  AIC  research  group  where  knowledge  sharing  on  research  training  and

development, options and opportunities for research development and further collaborative

linkages can be enhanced.

2016 INAUGURAL PROGRAM – SYNERGIES OF

INTEREST

This inaugural GRIN programme follows from partner consultations and sessions held at the AIC-RISTEK-DIKTI 3rd Research Summit in Surabaya in August 2016. In association with Australian Government’s Knowledge Sector Initiative team, the inaugural programme will align with the first Joint Science Symposium of The Indonesian Academy of Sciences (Akademi lmu Pengetahuan Indonesia - AIPI) and the Australian Academy of Science to be held in Canberra between 28 November and 1 December 2016. The programme will also align with the Asia-Pacific Solar Research Conference hosted by the ANU.

The purpose of the pilot programme is to:

1. introduce the GRIN participants to the research training and developmentinitiatives of the Australian partner institutions;

2. enable the GRIN participants from Australia and Indonesia to contribute to theJoint Science Symposium forum, and in particular to contribute to the discussionsession on research career pathways;

3. facilitate interaction between GRIN participants and a wide range of experts and practitioners, including through project opportunities that help build relevant skillsand knowledge in areas of demand by researchers as identified at the Indonesia-Australia Research Summit;

4. in the case of this Australian-based pilot program, offer an opportunity to enhance understanding of the Australian research environment in relation to governmentpolicy, corporate and community research requirements;

5. provide the basis for assessing the longer-term purpose, function, shape and viability of the GRIN initiative.

PURPOSE: The GRIN Program will start with Big Data. This hot topic is of relevance to researchers as much as it is to research managers as they look to manage research capacity in data handling, storage and utilisation. The day will also look at how complex research challenges are drawing on a consortium approaches at a global level and how the management of stakeholder networks is becoming key to achieving research outcomes. The engagement of graduate researchers in this challenge will also be considered.

KEY OUTCOMES: By the end of the Monash session you will have: • Gained an overview of research capacity challenges and opportunities• Gained an insight into how research institutions and research leaders in Australia and Indonesia are

acting to grow research programs through stakeholder networks and graduate researcheropportunities.

ON

PURPOSE: Roadtrips are just like journeys in Research - all about self-discovery and growing knowledge but without ever reaching the horizon. The journey from Melbourne to Canberra takes you through Victoria's North-East - once 'bushranger' county - across the Murray River into southern New South Wales and on to the Australian Capital Territory. We'll stop en route at the historic town of Beechworth. The day will offer some time to get to know your project teams but also to start some journal work for the program – A prompt for the day is how does documentation work for researchers and why is reflection important?

KEY OUTCOMES: By the end of the day you will have:

• Take in some of the history of north-east Victoria and beyond – and consider howhistorical enquiry provides a foundation for new research

PURPOSE: Today's program is all about orienting yourself in the research environment. We'll travel to Mt Ainslie for a view over Canberra then travel to the Canberra Deep Space Centre and on for lunch in the beautiful environment of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Looking beyond the planet and looking at the planet are just two perspectives that have challenged schools of research over the centuries. Richard will lead a session about planning and design and ask whether this facilitates or inhibits innovation. There will be some time for Project Team discussions with a prompt to consider the intended and unintended consequences of innovation.

KEY OUTCOMES: By the end of the day you will have:

• Considered some of the potential positive and negative aspects of forward planning and design

• Considered the environmental and social impacts of planning and design

• Considered the contribution made by pure science to society and human endeavour

SESSION CATALYSERS: Dr Inger Mewburn, Director of Research Training & Ms Victoria Firth-Smith, Senior Program and Events Coordinator

PURPOSE: Research on academic job ads show that universities are looking for an extremely broad set of skills and attributes when looking to hire early career researchers. These range from ‘soft skills’ such as pastoral care, team-work and networking, to highly technical skills in teaching and research. Many of these skills are not, by default, developed as part of the PhD experience, especially if your focus has been primarily on developing your dissertation. In this workshop we will critically examine these skill sets and think about how you might go about developing and evidencing them to future academic employers.

KEY OUTCOMES: By the end of this workshop participants will have:

• Developed an appreciation for the wide range of skills and attributes required of early career researchers and why university employers are looking for them.

• Started to review their CVs and identify gaps and opportunities

• Understand the academic recruitment process so that they can approach the task of looking for a job with increased confidence
