1938 Stephen Breen who has made many pil
grimages spoke at St. John's on Mar. 18 on Our Lady of Fatima. Special feature of the lecture and devotions that followed was the presence of the famous "Pilgrim Statue" of Our Lady of Fatima which has been venerated throughout the U. S. and Canada.
1939 ENGAGEMENTS: Albert Alleva to Miss
Paula Savino. Miss Savino teaches in the public school system, while Albert is now manager of a travel bureau. They are planning a trip to Europe after their marriage in July.
BIRTHS: A daughter, Ann Marie, to Dr. and Mrs. Nicholas Abramo on Mar. 7.
A son, their first, to Mr. and Mrs. Pat McD onald on Mar. 19. Pat, on the AP photo desk, has three girls.
Dr. D aniel Alagna has forsaken Richmond Hill for Flushing where he is now living on 1 79th St. . . . Another New Yorker gone West is John Powers who is living in La Cresente, Calif., outside Sacramento . . . The purchasing department of General Chemical Company has the services of Joseph Krajcovic . . . Another roving alumnus, Francis Brabson is now living in Philly.
1940 BIRTHS: A son, Kirkland Barton, to Dr.
and Mrs. Alexander Smith on Mar. 17 in Lawrence Hospital, Bronxville. This is the third child for the Smiths.
A son, their second, to Dr. and Mrs. Ted Stokien on Feb. 13. Classmate Dr. Paul Falco was the attending physician.
A son, James, to the Fred Kuhlmans out in San Francisco.
Congratulations to Gerard Caprio on his recent appointment as asst. general agent in the Newark office of Pacific Mutual Life ... Orlando Nunziata has been conducting a discussion in the " letters to the editor" section of the TABLET on methodology in the public school system . . . Alumni secretary Charles Brecht has just been elected treasurer of the Metropolitan College Public Relations Council.
1941 MARRIAGES: Dr. Theodore Macaluso to
Miss Sally Fazio of Ozone Park on Apr. 1 in All Saints Church, Brooklyn. A trip to Bermuda followed the ceremony.
BIRTHS: A son, Richard Gerard, to the Ed McCarricks on Feb. 20 at St. Vincent's Hospital. The new baby was almost ten pounds.
A daughter, Deirdre, to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Courtney on Feb. 2.
Each month the number of St. John's alumni and students who have entered the armed forces becomes larger. All of them are happy to receive letters from their old friends and current news of what is going on at home.
We have the addresses of some of these alumni, and hope to have more as they write and let us know of their whereabouts. Graduate School Celebrates ''Rerum Novarum'' Jubilee
A series of four lectures to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of Leo XIII' s encyclical on labor, "Rerum Novarum," has been scheduled by St. John's Graduate School for April and May. The talks are being given in cooperation with the Council of Catholic Organizations for Social Order.
Dr. Walter L. Willigan, chairman of the department of social studies, Graduate School, will lead off on April 13 with an address on "Christian Social Action. " This will be followed on April 20 with "The Place of Government in Economic Life" by Brother Justin, F.S.C., head of the labor-management department of Manhattan College.
The final lectures will be "The Teachings of Leo XIII" by Rev. William Burke, S.J., lecturer on sociology, Graduate School, on May 4, and on May 11, "The Mystical Body of Christ In Our Workaday World, " given by Mr. George K. Hunton, secretary of the Catholic Interracial Council and lecturer at Fordham U.
The lectures will be delivered at 4 p.m. in Room 301 of the Lewis Ave. building. Catholic teachers of the Diocese of Brooklyn especially are invited.
