When can I teach? • Normally from Year 2 of your PhD Programme.• First year students are allowed to teach, on the basis of the criteria

set out in the School policy approved in April 2012:– They have previous experience - which helps address the issue of lack of time for

training to be undertaken - especially if there is a teaching need in semester 1; and

– There is a shortage of other suitable teachers, i.e. a specific case needs to be made that there is no one else suitable; and

– An agreed maximum number of hours is set to avoid overload; and– There is a clear understanding that students should not miss their research

training classes, nor do they have grounds to request extensions to coursework submission, end of year reviews, etc; and

– They have their supervisor support

To teach in MBS you must have:• Completed the Faculty of

Humanities online training programme

• Completed the online training log book that accompanies the online training (see section 8.8 of the handbook)

• Participated in the Faculty of Humanities Webinar about being a TA

• Attended the Faculty workshop for TAs

• Attended the MBS training for TAs

In addition to apply for AHEA status you also need to have:• Reflected on the MBS

training by completing the relevant log book (see section 8.4 of the handbook)

• Undertaken and reflected on seven hours of teaching (see 8.3)

• Had an observation of teaching by a course co-ordinator (see 8.5)

• Written a 1500 word reflective essay

What you can do as first years …..

• Review the intranet to see which courses used Teaching Assistants last year (see previous slide)

• Make contact with the Course Co-ordinator via your Supervisor with an expression of interest in teaching

• Contact the current Teaching Assistant to join a seminar group to gain experience

• Join one of the regular Divisional TA Feedback Hubs where good practice is shared

• When dates are circulated, mark your calendar for the launch of the recruitment and training for 2016/17. Faculty and MBS training is mandatory
