KAT SZMIT PHOTO by Kat Szmit HARWICH ─ As Monomoy Valedictorian Catie Barr struggled to write her graduation speech, she grappled with the concept of telling a story. Then she realized her challenge was in trying to tell one story for the 105 members of the Class of 2016. “I realized there isn’t just one or two stories to tell,” said Barr to her fellow graduates, as well as their families and friends. “In just a few years of being together, we’ve lived a whole library’s worth of stories.” Those stories were circulated during Monomoy Regional High School’s second commencement exercises on June 5, as graduates, in speeches and between one another, shared moments and memories even as they bid their alma mater farewell. “I am not trying to suggest we have all had this perfect high school experience,” said Barr. “It’s not an easy process to merge two schools...but we did it. We came together and together have become the musicians, artists, athletes, intellects, activists, entrepreneurs, and leaders of the next generation.” Barr praised the atmosphere of a high school in which students are able to text teachers for assistance, where music often accompanied lunch in the school’s cafete- ria, and in which the community was so supportive, it bestowed nearly $350,000 in scholarship money upon its graduates. “The people here today,” said Barr, “this community has made us who we are.” Salutatorian Kristen Siegel lauded the class for staying true to themselves through the merger and beyond. “Rather than resist these new circumstances that were thrust upon us, we accepted them and have grown ex- traordinarily as people as a result,” she said, Siegel said she admired the adaptability of the class and encouraged them to seek their own unique successes. “Society has certain ideals about success,” she said. “But it is our job to develop and strive after our own passions because individuals create society, and society has no place dictating the lives of individuals.” While remembering the happy moments of high school is understandable, Siegel urged her classmates not to dwell too long in the past. “When we put too much focus on what ‘was,’ we risk missing out on what ‘is,’” she said. Having a Plan B is also helpful, according to student speaker, Class Secretary, and Student Council Representa- tive Garrett Sherman, who praised his parents for instilling the need to plan in him. “Planning for any possible scenario has been the name of the game for the Class of 2016,” Sherman said. “In just four short years, this entire graduating class has learned to roll with the punches, accept a challenge, and overcome adversity. In short, this graduating class is versatile, re- silient, and strong.” Sherman noted that each of the graduates was set to graduate a Chatham Blue Devil or a Harwich Rough Rider before the merger took place, something he felt helped cultivate a new sense of community with its own traditions and relationships. “The Class of 2016 is resilient, and without a doubt, we are one class who can make Plan B seem like it was the original plan all along,” Sherman said. “Let us bask in the glory of this red letter day.” “There is no way I could describe these past four years in one story,” said Class Co-President Molly Doncaster. “We have been through so much together, it wouldn’t do it justice.” “I feel confident,” said Barr, “That we will all look back and appreciate the experience of being a Shark.”

Monomoy Regional High School

Soon-to-be Monomoy graduate Hannah Thacher enjoys a contempla-tive moment during the ceremony at MRHS on June 5, the second commencement of the regional high school.

Monomoy Valedictorian Catie Barr celebrates her fellow classmates for coming together as part of the unified high school “to become the musicians, artists, athletes, intellects, activists, entrepreneurs and leaders of the next generation.” Barr was one of just four students in the entire world to answer all 100 questions on the AP Psychology exam correctly, and will be attending Harvard University this fall.

KAT SzMiT PHoToS

Monomoy Salutatorian Kristen Siegel addresses the Class of 2016. Siegel, of Harwich, is a talented violinist and musician, as well as a dancer with the Reaching Heart School of Ballet, who will be heading to Duke University in the fall. In honoring her class, Siegel praised them for their adaptability. “In a short time,” Siegel said. “We will be stepping off the congested highway of secondary school and onto our own individual paths towards success.”

Ready for their big moment at Monomoy are John Vagenas, Matt Po-mocka, Wivenor Celin and Alix Pierre.

Anna-Leigh Milan makes Monomoy graduation fun. in one of many touching moments during the ceremony, Miriam Massaad is presented with her diploma by younger brother Charbel.

Connor Meehan and Drew Senatore share a pre-ceremony moment with teacher Andrew Matheson.

Cassie Hall receives her Monomoy diploma with a smile from Principal Bill Burkhead.

Graduating senior Jasmine Vergara-Ullman offers a beautiful rendition of “I’ll Be Seeing You” while her classmates look on. She received a standing ovation for her performance.

Some people offer a wink and a smile, while 2016 Monomoy graduate Charles Amaker offers a wave and a smile. June 5 proved momentous for Amaker in more than one way. Not only did he become a Monomoy alumnus, but also celebrated the arrival of niece Ella.

The future is calling and that’s just fine because Jade Anderson, Amanda Gayle, Kemoi Haughton and Akera Forrester are ready.
