Graduation August 2020
Faculty of Arts and Education
Yindyamarra Winhanganha
“...the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.”
Welcome On behalf of the Charles Sturt University community, it is my pleasure to invite you to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Graduation is an important milestone that marks the completion of your current studies and the beginning of a new chapter in your lives.
Your paths may be varied as you go on to take first jobs, promotions, research, perhaps another degree... but you all share something special. You are now lifelong members of the Charles Sturt University family.
As Australia’s largest regional university, we are proud of the continuing contributions our graduates make to communities and the world around them. You too are ready to make your mark on this world.
I encourage you all to take forward the ethos of Charles Sturt University as you embark on your future endeavours – and apply the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.
Dr Michele Allan
Chancellor
Our ethos
Yindyamarra Winhanganha. This is a Wiradjuri phrase meaning ‘the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in’. It’s at the heart of everything we stand for here at Charles Sturt University.
It’s the reason we strive to create a world worth living in. It ties us to the traditional Indigenous Australians whose land we are fortunate and proud to share, and to the diverse communities across Australia that we serve. It is also the driving force behind what we teach to, share with and learn from our students.
And it embodies the mission of our university, which is to develop and spread insight and knowledge in order to create a better future – through expanding educational opportunities, delivering exemplary career-focused courses and enabling original research. Because we believe in making a difference.

Our historyOur ethos, Yindyamarra Winhanganha, has been part of the Charles Sturt University narrative from the very start. Our history dates back more than 125 years, to the establishment in 1895 of a vocational farm at Bathurst designed to give rural people access to skills and education.
Over subsequent decades, agricultural and teaching centres were set up in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst, disseminating knowledge so individuals could improve their prospects and better serve their communities.
Charles Sturt University officially became a university in 1989, merging the former Mitchell College of Advanced Education and the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education, and incorporating educational facilities at Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga.
Since then we have continued to grow, and now give students from across Australia and the world access to quality university education.
Today we have campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga. We also have Charles Sturt University Study Centres in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as well as study locations in Canberra, Goulburn, Manly, Parramatta and Wangaratta.
The man from whom the university takes its name – Charles Napier Sturt – was a British soldier who sailed to the colony of New South Wales in 1827 to pursue
his passion for exploration.
Our delivery of world-class online education is informed by more than 50 years of experience in distance learning. The majority of our degrees can now be studied online.
We have unique partnerships with a wide variety of organisations, including TAFE providers, the NSW Police Force, the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Commercial Radio Australia, the Islamic Sciences & Research Academy of Australia, and universities in China and Sri Lanka.
We also have many partners around the world, enabling our students to undertake international study experiences, further expanding their horizons.

Isileli Jason KIOAThe Role of the Tongan National Conference in the Uniting Church
in Australia
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of the Tongan
National Conference within the Uniting Church in Australia. It makes
use of the methodology of a progressive theological reflection
adapted to the Tongan cultural practice of ‘rolling out the mat’
(Fofola e fala). There is due recognition of how the Conference is an
event: it argues the case for a more defined authority and role in the
interconciliar nature of a ‘multicultural’ church.
Mark David MICKELBUROUGHFor God So Loved the World: Theology and the Australian Alpine
Environment
This DMin is an example of eco-theology, with a specific focus on
the Australian Alpine region. It examines how God, understood as
Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, is embedded in and active within
this environment. From such theology, practices were derived for
appreciation and care of the environment, and for worship. Following
this, a web-based curriculum with lessons, images, videos and
resources was developed for teaching eco-theology in Anglican
senior schools.

Marijana BAČIĆA Study of Undergraduate Student Uptake of Library Discovery Tools
This research investigated the factors involved in undergraduate
students’ use of library discovery tools. It was found that students
were more likely to use discovery tools for locating assignment-
related information when these students used the catalogue,
consulted their lecture notes, or required online book chapters.
Students also used search engines such as Google and other library
resources.
Melissa Claire BOYESFolklore in Contemporary Australian Literature: Baba Yaga as
guardian and mentor in antipodean narratives
‘Folklore in Contemporary Australian Literature’ is a doctoral thesis
consisting of two components. The first is a creative piece exploring
Australian culture through mythological and folkloric motifs. The
second element is an exegesis which places the creative text in a
comparative study of contemporary Australian literature repositioning
myths and folk tales (particularly those featuring the nature-witch
Baba Yaga) in the Australian literary landscape.
Clare Alison BRITTHopeful Lines of Flight: Possibilities for Reimagining Pedagogy in the
Early Years of Primary School in Australia
Clare Britt’s Hopeful Lines of Flight: Possibilities for Reimagining
Pedagogy in the Early Years of Primary School in Australia chronicles
her transformative research exploring the ways in which pedagogy
is imagined and enacted in the early years of primary school. This
case study explores ways that one school imagined what children,
teaching and learning could be, and how these pedagogical
possibilities were being enacted in the early years of primary school.

Graham Edwin LUPPBuilding Bathurst: The story of Those Who Built Bathurst and Central
NSW 1815 - 1915
Graham Lupp’s 2-volume thesis, Building Bathurst, 1815-1915,
examines the work of seventy 19th century architects who built
Bathurst and much of central NSW. As well as all their known
buildings, the research covers their cultural and civic contributions,
situating them in the changes brought by European settlement of
inland NSW. In addition to newspapers and historic photos, Lupp’s
own architectural research, dating from 1967, greatly expanded
previous histories.
Brian MCKINLAYAn Agenda for Joy: Rowan Williams’s Theology of Conflict, Unity and
Solidarity
This thesis explores a theology of conflict and disagreement through
the work of the Anglican theologian Rowan Williams. It argues that
conflict and unity are not opposed but are essential parts of the
struggle for mutual recognition and solidarity. The thesis develops a
theological concept of solidarity as a way of understanding the unity
of the church as well as struggles for the common good in society.

Theology in dialogue with the collaborative films of Rolf de Heer and
David Gulpilil
Australian films and filmmakers have received little attention in
film and theology research. In response to this situation, this
thesis provides a theological dialogue between the films of Rolf
de Heer and David Gulpilil, the theologian Willie James Jennings
and Indigenous theology. The dialogue illuminates the impacts
of colonialism in Australia and provides new ways of imagining
relationality between peoples, and between people and the rest of
creation.
Peter Trafford WALKERON THE VISION OF GOD - An historical and theological inquiry into
the significance of Nicholas of Cusa’s De visione Dei for Christian
theology of religions and inter-religious dialogue
This thesis establishes that De visione Dei is a rich yet underutilized
resource for Christian theology of religions and interreligious
dialogue by examining Cusa’s contention that God is known best
via a multiplicity of perspectives, then presenting warrants to justify
deploying the text as a resource for interreligious engagement, and
finally applying De visione Dei to a contentious issue for Christian
theology of religions, ‘Pluralism vs Particularity’.
Jennifer Lois WATKINSRural Rites: Women’s Experience of Funerals and Remembrance on
Lower Eyre Peninsula in the Post 1960s Era
This thesis, in the field of regional history and contemporary history,
gives an analysis of women’s experience of mourning rites. The
Lower Eyre Peninsula is the focus, but information about the history
of funerals in all of Australia is included. The thesis finds significant
changes have taken place in recent decades, and secularism, equal
participation by women, and individualistic rites are important themes
in contemporary Australian funerals.
Anne Laura WHISKENInformed Learning Practice in a Secondary School: A Participatory
Action Research Case Study
This thesis reports a multiple case study involving secondary
teachers using Participatory Action Research (PAR) to explore use
of informed learning ideas to bridge the historic gap between theory
and practice of information literacy education. Its findings show
that Informed Learning PAR can deliver transformative professional
learning, of significance for schools seeking to change teacher
practice so students learn expert information use as part of subject
learning.
Lucia WUERSCHTransactional Analysis in Organisations: A Case Study with a Focus
on Internal Communication
Transactional Analysis (TA) in Organisations: A Case Study with
a Focus on Internal Communication is an organisational study
exploring the impact of TA principles on policy and workplace
practices. Analysis highlights how TA enhances the social-technical
organisational system. When placing emphasis on a human
perspective, developing individual skills and a desire to accept
others, an organisation is better placed to achieve a more meaningful
role for wider society.

“What we do as individuals, within our communities, in our personal and professional lives, does make a difference to somebody. It will have a ripple effect. I think the small changes have the biggest impact.”

Tammy O’Connor admits she is one of those rare and lucky people who knew early on how she wanted to make a real and lasting impact on this world.
“I studied a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University and I knew as soon as I started that I wanted to become a midwife. To me it seemed like such an awesome career.
“After graduating I worked as a registered nurse and quickly enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at Charles Sturt while working in the maternity unit as a student midwife. The uni gave me a great platform to learn in a safe environment, and provided a good stepping stone into my career. That’s why, in 2016, I completed a Master of Midwifery through Charles Sturt University. It opened the door to those higher level positions, including my current role as a clinical midwifery consultant for the Western NSW Local Health District.
“The beauty of nursing and midwifery is it can take you anywhere.”
Tammy’s ‘anywhere’ turned out to be parts of NSW which rarely received the health and educational support services they required. Realising women in remote areas needed access to antenatal and postnatal care, Tammy has been instrumental in implementing an outreach maternity program.
“I believe it’s a basic human right for women to access a midwife during their pregnancy, regardless of their location. Working and living regionally provides me with the opportunity to work within the primary health care model of midwifery. It’s what I love!”
Courtney Glazebrook is creating new beginnings by treasuring the past. Passionate about Indigenous education, she is driven to make a difference in the lives of young Aboriginal children by giving them the best start to their educational journey. As the director of Towri Multifunctional Aboriginal Children’s Service, each day, when she opens the Towri doors, Courtney makes practical progress in her quest to cultivate a strong, connected and inclusive community.
“Towri encompasses health, education, community engagement and family support. Early childhood care has such great flow-on effects for families. While we’re providing care for children we’re also building platforms for parents, giving them the opportunity for employment and better health. We are building the capacity of whole communities. When children thrive so do communities.
“I have the opportunity to create tangible change. What we do, what we teach and what we advocate for directly impacts upon the community and everyone in it. I have learned, through my Charles Sturt University studies and through my career, to question different regimes of truth.
“Aboriginal people are strong. We are connected. We are progressive. And at Towri we are creating new beginnings for those who come through. That really excites me.”

Chandan Rauniyar has long been fascinated by the power of computing and the impact it can have on people’s lives.
“I have always been amazed by computers and what complex software could do. I was interested in software development and it seemed like such an awesome career – being able to develop complex computer software that is capable of transforming lives.
“So I decided to study a Bachelor of Information Technology at the Charles Sturt University Study Centre in Melbourne. I majored in software development, learning about the principles of software development, data structures, and database design, as well as the ethics and security issues around computing. ”
With a little help from the Study Centre team, Chandan was able to step into his career at the cutting edge of software development with confidence.
“After graduating, I managed to secure a scholarship for Study Centre Melbourne’s Internship Program. With help from the careers team, I got selected as an intern at an IT company in Melbourne. As an intern, I was able to apply and develop my skills in the context of a small business. This invaluable industry experience helped me in then landing my first job as a software developer in a multinational company.”

“I want people to know the unprecedented worth of my scholarship. It went beyond monetary value. It saved my mental health. I was able to concentrate on the important things and not stress one little bit about money.
“Uni is a tough gig. Juggling course requirements and placements, a social life, a couple of jobs and the everlasting battle with Centrelink (which can become more than a little tricky at times). But with the support of Charles Sturt donors and supporters, a huge amount of that burden has been lifted from our shoulders.
“I believe that our gratitude should not only be shown with an offer of thanks, but by the way we carry ourselves through our university career – and in our actual career that will follow. Through our scholarships we’ve been given the opportunity to make the absolute best of our university experience.”
Dav Francis, Bachelor of Paramedicine student
“Life presents us with many gifts and the best of those is education.
“I had my own business for 30 years – I knew I could do that. But I didn’t have academic skills, so didn’t think scholarships would be for me. But a friend helped me apply.
“I’ve never asked for help before but I decided to put my hand up so I can fulfil this dream. I applied for everything – and I didn’t know if I was doing it right or wrong – I just wrote the truth. The scholarship gave me the funds to cover moving costs, set up costs, tutoring and living costs.
“It enabled me to cut back on the hours I worked and concentrate on my learning, because I’d never done anything like this before.”
Jacqui Thompson, Bachelor of Pharmacy student
