2 Batchelor Campus Graduation 2013

The Graduation CeremonyTraditionally, universities and other tertiary institutions hold graduation ceremonies to formally confer awards on students who have successfully completed a program of study.

At Batchelor Institute, graduation ceremonies combine European traditions with the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities, graphically demonstrating the Institute’s both-ways philosophy of education.

Among the most obvious elements derived from the European tradition is the distinctive academic dress worn by graduating students and others entitled to do sobecauseoftheirpositionwithintheInstituteortheiracademicqualifications.

The gowns, hoods and stoles worn by many of those at the ceremony have their origins in patterns which have changed little since the Middle Ages. Traditionally, the design, colour and decoration of each have come to indicate the status of its wearerbydenotinghisorherfieldofstudyandacademiclevelachieved.Seetheguide to academic dress in the back of this booklet for more details.

Integral to the ceremony are elements reflecting the traditions of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander communities from which students come. In particular, graduating students are encouraged to combine traditional decorations and regalia ortheirculturewiththeiracademicdress,emphasizingtheboth-wayssignificanceof the occasion.

Dance also forms a part of the overall ceremony, including its opening and closing moments when the academic procession arrives and departs. in addition, individual students are often ‘danced up’ to receive their awards by family and community members.

Even when students are not accompanied by dancers, they are often escorted to receivetheirawardsbyfamilymembers, reflectingrecognitionofthesharedandcollective importance of each student’s achievements.

PLEASE NOTE:A large number of students whose names appear in this program will, by choice, receive their awards either in absentia, at the Central Australian graduation ceremony in Alice Springs, or at community celebrations held later in the year.

Batchelor Campus Graduation 2013 3

Director’s MessageI would like to welcome everybody to today’s Batchelor Campus Graduation, a special event on our calendar, as it is a day that we get to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students.

I would personally like to congratulate all of you on your success in completing your chosen course. I know that many of you have had to overcome numerous obstacles during your learning journey and receiving your formal qualificationtoday is testimony to your dedication and persistence and you should be very proud. I know we are and I am sure your family, friends and community are as well.

While today is about the students, if I could digress for one moment, Batchelor Instituteremainscommittedtobeingasignificantcontributortotheempowermentof Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people both in the Northern Territory and nationally.

As a Vocational Education Training provider an increased amount of our delivery is now being undertaken remotely in response to community demand and to align programs to community employment, economic development and capacity building aspirations.

The Institute also continues to seek to collaborate strongly with industry, government agencies, key Indigenous organisations, community, remote service providers and other education and training organisations to improve delivery outcomes. Along with a range of innovative strategies to address foundation skills the collaborative relationships that have been established have resulted in improved engagement and delivery models, better support for students and genuine employment or further education or training pathways for participants. I would like to acknowledge all of these stakeholders with special mention to the Centre for Appropriate Technology, NT Corrective Services, the Department of Education and Children’s Services, Minerals Council NT with whom we won the 2012 National Industry Collaboration Training Award, DEEWR, FaHCSIA, JobFind, the many CDEPs we have worked with over the last 12 months and most recently the Australian Defence Force.

Our six key areas of VET delivery are Community Services, Conservation and Land Management, Construction and Mining, Creative Industries, Health and Well Being and Foundation Skills with a focus on work readiness.

As a Higher Education provider, in 2012 the delivery of Higher Education undergraduate and postgraduate course work programs commenced in partnership with Charles Darwin University through the Australian Centre of Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE). Long term both organisations have a strong commitment to making this partnership a successful one and to improve both the participation and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Higher Education. Market share will increase when there is a better understanding of the quality of the programs that are being jointly offered, the employment
