Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education. Its mission is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students by providing opportunities for development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for an exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship of scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is offered to students with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher. Graduates who are members of the MVCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa [Lambda Beta] may be identified by a gold stole with royal blue Greek letters as part of their regalia.

SPIRE National Honor Society

SPIRE is a national honor society dedicated to recognizing adult learners and non-traditional students enrolled in two-year academic institutions. Its purpose is to respect and appreciate the unique achievements of these students as they are highly engaged and motivated to succeed in all aspects of their lives. Membership in SPIRE is offered to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, are involved in at least three campus or community activities, are within 12 months of graduation, and have demonstrated leadership, persistence, and future promise. Graduates who are members of SPIRE are recognized by wearing a royal blue stole as part of their commencement regalia.

Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is a New York State grant-funded initiative designed to foster academic excellence for historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged college students. To encourage excellence, CSTEP cultivates student independence and enhances the experience of participants through various academic enrichment programs, events, and activities. CSTEP students are pursuing professional careers in the sciences, technologies, engineering, mathematics, and licensed professions. Graduates that have completed their CSTEP requirements are recognized by wearing a royal blue stole with white trim.

SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence

Excellence in Adjunct Teaching: Musco MillnerMusco Millner is a highly respected adjunct Instructor who teaches primarily in the School of STEM, and has also taught in the School of Public and Human Services since his hire in 2011. He motivates his students by infusing his own life experiences, including his career with the NYS Troopers, into the classroom with powerful presentations and thought provoking discussions. Musco’s commitment to service leadership, willingness to lead by example, and history of collaboration with his students and colleagues, make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.

Excellence in Classified Service: Ryan BarsuchRyan Barsuch has been a Sergeant in the Department of Public Safety for six years and has become the “go-to” officer within the department and at the College. Ryan works tirelessly for the good of his colleagues and the students. He is respected for his genuine compassion for those he serves, consistently seeking to understand rather than passing judgment. His commitment to service leadership and consistent history of respect and professionalism when dealing with stressful and sometimes emotionally charged situations is extraordinary and make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Excellence in Faculty ServiceAaron FriedAaron Fried is a highly respected Associate Professor of Anatomy and Physiology in the School of STEM whose tenure dates back to 2010. Beyond the classroom, he leads and supports College-wide initiatives that will shape the future of MVCC. Aaron has demonstrated innovation and initiative to improve efficiency and productivity in the classroom. Through his work with the College-Wide Curriculum Committee and the Guided Pathways initiative, Aaron has developed and encouraged stronger connections and partnerships between internal stakeholders at the College. Aaron’s unwavering commitment to equity, educational excellence, and long-lasting impact make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.

Excellence in Professional ServiceDeanna Ferro-Aurience Deanna Ferro-Aurience is a highly regarded staff member whose tenure began in the Office of Institutional Advancement in 2011. She currently serves as Director of Development, overseeing the everyday operation and long-term strategic planning for development efforts at the College, in addition to managing several grants for MVCC’s thINCubator. She is a sought-after colleague, recognized by her peers as meticulous and thorough, and one who can be depended on to go above and beyond all expectations. Deanna’s unwavering commitment to her colleagues and the greater community make her a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Excellence in Professional ServiceJames MyersJames (“Jim”) Myers’ 30-year tenure at MVCC began as an employee in the Facilities and Operations Department. He has steadily risen through the ranks allowing him to build a rich institutional knowledge that has positioned him well for his current role as Coordinator of Research and Analysis. Known as a reliable, methodical, and driven colleague, he is involved with college-wide initiatives that require a deeper look at data that sometimes reveal institutional gaps. Jim consistently offers appropriate prompts that help navigate challenging conversations, earning him the respect of his peers. Jim’s spirit of service and commitment to excellence make him a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Excellence in TeachingChristine MillerChristine Miller is a highly respected Professor of Photography whose tenure dates back to 1994. Her exceptional commitment to equity in the classroom provides her peers with a model for aspirational pedagogical techniques. Serving as the Chair of Faculty Caucus, her energy, inspiration, and collaborative mindset for knowledge-sharing has proven to be an invaluable asset. She also serves as the Co-Coordinator of the Employee Enrichment Program, designing and implementing New Faculty Institute and Employee Enrichment Institutes. Christine’s dedication to her students and colleagues, willingness to lead by example, and commitment to her craft make her a very deserving recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
