Competence Boards

Because we need to know:

How do we qualify the production schools as a vital part of the educational system ?

How do we make it clear that there are different ways of learning for different kinds of youth ?

and that working in a workshop could be the best way of learning for some students ?

cause they are

cause there are

cause it is

How do we document that the students learn in a production school ?

How do we document what the students learn in a production school ?

Why discus this ?

Competence Boards

Because we need to know:

How do we document what the students learn in a production school ?

We need a system to do that.

The system should be recognized by the common educational system

The system should make sense to the students, their peers, their parents, their world

The system should not interfere with the pedagogical concept of the workshop - but enhance it (i.e. It should reflect the workshop and be a logical tool for the workshop teacher)

The Competence Boards are a part of our attempt in that direction

Concept (the basic credos)

Competence Boards

The meaning of life is: MeaningWhy bother doing anything if you don’t see the point

You become somebody by making a differenceand that making should be recognized by somebody else

to some youngsters it could be

study math

after 10 years: get a phd

invent something important

win the Nobel Prize

to our typical students:

there’s no point in math10 years is a very long timedon’t know anybody with a phddon’t expect to invent anything

It’s easier just to become a TV-star orkill a rock star

It is here we (production schools) offer meaning recognition of the making of a difference thru production/ working in a Binding Working Community

Charter for Danish Production Schools

Here, let’s emphasize 2 of the 11 principles, ## 2 and 10 2 Learning takes place in a binding working community. The aim is the young person’s personal, social and professional development.

At a production school, the production itself is not an end but a pedagogical tool forming the basis of a different way of learning. Therefore, it is i. a. important to maintain the production as an end in order for it to function as a means.

When the participants face a workshop practice where things must be done because it is necessary, they will be challenged on their responsibility and ability to cooperate to finish a task. The work must therefore be organized to include the participant in a working community founded on genuine cooperation and joint responsibility, which at the same time makes sense to the individual participant.

Learning thus takes place in a social practice involving and developing the young people both professionally, socially and personally, for instance by means of peer tutoring by more experienced participants which is a valuable way of promoting social, personal and professional goals.

Charter for Danish Production Schools

Here, let’s emphasize 2 of the 11 principles, ## 2 and 10 10The young people’s development of competencies is documented in a production school certificate.

It is of great importance that the competencies that the participants obtain at the production school are recognized in order to give the young people the possibility of feeling appreciated.

At discharge, the production schools issue a certificate proving the participants’ level of competence within selected areas of competence and supporting the participants’ future search and selection in relation to further education and employment.

Concept

Competence Boards

In this concept there is

no difference between learning/education and

working/production

Working = Learning

Production = EducationSo how do we describe all that

to the students ?

to our environment ?

to ourselves ?

One answer is

Competence Boards

real

real

What do we mean by "real“

The work/the product has to be important.

The product has to be important to the students and the teacherThere is no guarantee that the product is important to the students, even if it's important to the teacher. But there is a guarantee that if it's not important to the teacher, it won't matter to the students at all.

This means that as a teacher you are working width the workshop

and you are still the teacher

you are a participant and the boss

this is

teaching by doing

Across you have the workshop, skills/competences (what's possible to

learn in the workshop)

Down you have the crew i.e. students

And where the students meets the skills, you can (giving a color) evaluate (i.e. give value to) the effort

red = beginneryellow = skilledgreen = competent

Competence Boards

What do they look like (in real workshops)

In the workshop the board is a dynamic tool in the planning of production and education

Page 14: Grænseløst samarbejde Fehmarnbeltregion Grenzenlose Zusammenarbeit EFRE Europäischer Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung Workshop Competence Boards June the

Competence Boards

How can it end up as documentation

For every line (student) in the matrix, the student has a piece of paper where the skills are noted

The paper is signed by the workshop teacher as a guarantee (to the world) that the student has achieved these levels

2 conditions

1The competence boards are meant to be used in production school workshops. It's hard to define the competences if you cannot define the production. On the other hand, working with the board competences can be a help in the process of finding and defining the production.

2The boards should be seen as a (vital) part of a larger documentation system. The documentation system should also address practical info, the social and personal competences, safety etc - i.e. all the issues that are important to production school education

Page 17: Grænseløst samarbejde Fehmarnbeltregion Grenzenlose Zusammenarbeit EFRE Europäischer Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung Workshop Competence Boards June the

Implementation

Competence Boards

If the conditions are met

just do it

Our model (used in 12 Danish schools) is

Do it school by school

Some preparing2 - 3 workshop days (all teachers and management) with a consultant Some home work in between Board production

1 - 2 workshop days (all teachers and management) implementing the system in workshop routines and connecting to the rest of the documentation

And then it's an ongoing process keeping the system alive

Costs ?

Competence Boards

In Korsør we have used the boards for more than 7 years

It was an effort making the systemIt's an effort maintaining the system and keeping it aliveBut it’s been worth it

It has clarified the views on the workshops and what's happening there

regarding productionregarding education

for the studentsfor the familiesfor the official educational systemfor visitors from abroad and last, but not least for us

Experiences

Competence Boards

In Korsør we have used the boards for more than 7 years

4 more schools are using the same system now

5 more schools are in the process of implementing

2 schools stopped the process

at least 3 more schools in DK are (without help from Korsør) using similar systems with documentation boards
