View from the Pew! It is always a joy when our church is used for happy events and weddings are one of those. There have been three this year start-ing with Laurie and Iain, previously reported.

On 26th October it was the turn of Claire and Robert. With the church gloriously decked with flowers in autumn colours and the organ play-ing ‘Romantic Wedding March’ by Mi-randa Wong, based on Wagner's Brid-al Chorus, Claire arrived in a very styl-

ish ivory gown with her veil gently floating on the breeze. Her bridesmaids looked a picture in their gorgeous coral red dresses and pretty posies. We wish Claire and Robert good health and good fortune for a long, happy marriage. Then it was all change on 2nd November for Becca and Alan where there was an exotic, tropical theme with pea-cock feathers and canna lilies. Becca's dress was prettily appliqued with tiny flowers and her bridesmaids looked lovely in their brilliant emerald green. The congregation enjoyed the singing by Natalie, Amy and Felicity. We wish Becca and Alan God's blessings on their marriage for many years to come.

During November the Remembrance Sunday ser-vice was led by Jill Dighton. We are most grateful to Jill for helping us at this time. On 17th Novem-ber Jason Taylor preached during the Eucharist

service. It was a great pleasure to welcome Jason and his wife Jeanette to Grafham. We look forward to seeing more of them both next year following Jonathan's retirement when Jason takes over the care of Grafham and Ellington.

We now look forward to Advent and at our service on Advent Sunday, 1st December the first Advent candle will be lit to signify the light of Jesus coming into the world.

On that day our travelling nativity will begin its journey round the

village. Please give Jill a ring on 810157 if you would like to have the nativity box in your house during December for your children to enjoy.

On Saturday 7th December, the new style Christmas Fayre will take place in the village hall from 11am until 6pm. Don't miss this special pre-Christmas event in our

village to browse the stalls and enjoy the coffee and mince pies in the morning or the cake and mulled wine in the afternoon.

The Flower Club will be decorating the church in time for our Carol Service on 22nd December at 4.30pm (not 4pm as previously stated). Stay after-wards for Christmas cake and mulled wine provid-

ed and served by our kind helpers, Pat, Frances and Diana.

The Crib Service especially for children of all ages (from 0 to 100) will be on Christmas Eve at 4pm. All those knitted figures will be scattered around the church for the children to gather up and return to the crib. There will be instruments to shake, rattle and roll and lots of fun for all the family.

We are pleased to announce that our Archdeacon Hugh McCurdy has agreed to take our Eucharist Service on Christmas day so do come along and help us welcome him to Grafham.

On the fifth Sunday in December, 29th there will be a Group Eucharist at Elling-ton at 11am. The service on the first Sun-day of January, 5th will be a Family ser-vice with the theme of Epiphany.

Jonathan's last service in post will be on 2nd February at Easton church at 11am. We are all welcome to this special good-

bye service for Jonathan and the refreshments afterwards. Please contact Hazel 810326 for any further details.

Next year we look forward to a new era in the life of Grafham church. Our major repair works on the roof, struc-ture and drainage will begin in April. When the arches have been strengthened and the roof repaired the damaged plas-terwork will be redecorated making the walls look fresh and clean. Fund-ing is still coming in from some of the charitable organisations we have approached and we are close to achieving our shortfall to balance the books.

With that note of optimism, we at All Saints wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year!

PARISH NEWS November 2013

Planning news An appeal has been lodged against the decision to refuse the application to erect 3 wind turbines at Bicton Farm near Kimbolton.

The local development plan is under consultation. There are no develop-ments planned for Grafham, but one

site is planned for Brampton to give 10 houses in Thrap-ston Road. Details can be found on the planning web-site.

Outline planning approval has been granted to the Al-conbury Weald redevelopment site.

Cllr Downes reported the outcomes from the meeting of safety services held in the wake of the recent chlorine leak and asked what would be the information point for Grafham to advise as many as possible about potential hazards to its population. We have a facebook page called Grafham Village Friends which has 100 members. Information is often posted to this page and we ask that the members of the group let their neigh-bours know of anything important. News can travel quite quickly in this way.

Further complaints from surrounding areas have been received about the size of the cycling event and the

number of participants taking over public roads. The organisers have spoken with Cllr Watson and expressed concern about the complaints. This particular event is not annual and will not take place again until 2015. Other events are planned for next year and, as usual, discussions will take

place with a safety advisory group comprised of Cam-bridgeshire Highways and the police. A New-Year’s Eve event with 300 participants is planned. The clerk will email the organisers to get full details concerning times and routes and publish these as soon as they are

available. Peter Downes will find out about the potential for road closures and ask if eventers are briefed about riding safely through residential areas.

County and District Council budgets are currently being planned. £151m of savings must be found over the next 5 years. Ser-vices which will no longer be provid-ed, must potentially be taken over by Parish Councils or volunteers and Parish Council precepts will have to be raised to cover any additional expenditure.

There are a few trees around the vil- lage which are probably in need of some attention. If you think you can identify any such trees, please let a Parish Councillor know so that work can be arranged.

The Parish Council are planning to upgrade the kitchen in the village hall. Plans have been received from Howden Joinery and from Wickes. At some point, the coun-cil is likely to need the services of carpenters, plumbers, electri-cians etc. and would like to hear from you if you can provide any of these services.

It is planned to register the playing field as a QEII Field in Trust. This move will protect the field for future gener-ations against any future plans to move or to develop it.

The Parish Council has agreed the lease of part of the car park at the village hall to Grafham Community Shop Ltd. for ten years.

The date of the next Parish Council meeting will be Tuesday 10th December 2013.

The next County/District Council surgery will be held on the morning of Saturday 7th December 2013, at the village hall.

SUPERFAST BROADBAND FOR GRAFHAM We have some very exciting news to share with everyone!

Thanks in no small part to the enthusiasm shown by you all in the recent campaign to bring Superfast Broadband to the village and the consequent very high level of registrations, we’re delighted to tell you that the FIRST superfast cabinets in the county that went live under the ConnectingCambridgeshire programme were launched here in Grafham.

There was an official “ribbon cutting” ceremony held at the cabinet on Monday 25th November and a media event followed that in the village hall, which you may well have already seen or heard about.

Just in case you still aren’t sure, the cabinet we refer to is the shiny, new green box recently installed on the corner of Brampton Road, opposite School House, right next to the yellow grit bin.

More importantly for everyone reading this, is the news that the cabinet is now able to accept orders for superfast broadband so there’s now nothing to stop you getting fibre-based broadband

installed before Christmas.

So, what do you and your family and friends do, now that superfast broadband is available here in Grafham? We expect that there will be lots of questions about how best to proceed, so we have put together a short set of questions and answers below, which we hope will go some way to clarifying the situation and avoiding any confusion. There is also a fuller and more detailed set posted on the Grafham Vil-lage web-site, www.grafham.org.uk/broadband

If, after reading through these, you still have questions that aren’t covered, or you’re confused by any of our answers, or you’re unsure what this actually means for you, your property and your family, then please email either of us and we'll do our best to clarify things as soon as we can [email protected] or [email protected]

Also, join us at the Christmas Fayre in the village hall on 7th December. Hear about the superfast services that are now available in Grafham. Discuss your queries with us. Talk to early users.

Alastair Brydon and Chris Bulow – Broadband Champions

Questions and Answers:

Q: Do I automatically get superfast broadband?

A: No. This is a new service and has to be ordered by you.

Q: Do I have to order superfast broadband from BT or

have to stay with my existing supplier?

A: A lot of suppliers offer superfast broadband in the UK. However, not all of them may choose to provide services here, so you will need to check which ones offer this ser-vice using this list http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/buy-it-now/Default.aspx - tab2. You will find a useful dis-cussion of factors to consider when choosing a supplier at http://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/which-fibre-isp and a couple of comparison sites are: http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/ and http://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband-offers.html.

Q: Will it cost me lots more money to get this much faster service?

A: No. Superfast services will cost a little more, but prices should not be substantially higher than you currently pay.

Q: Will I need to commit to a new minimum term con-tract?

A: Probably yes. A lot of the companies may ask you to sign up for 12 or even 18 months. Shop around though.

Q: OK, so which of these companies would you recom-mend to us?

A: Sorry, we can’t and we don’t recommend specific companies or services. However, we know that broad-band can be a confusing subject and that everyone has different needs. For example, you may live alone, share broadband with other family members, or live in a multi-tenancy property. Some of you may run businesses from home. We are happy to talk through your choices if you’re unsure.

Q: What speed will I get?

A: The maximum download speed you can currently get from the FTTC service is around 76Mbps, while the up-load speed can be up to 19Mbps.

All being well you should be able to obtain close to 76Mbps if you are within 300m of the new cabinet. Even people at the very edges of the village should see a speed improvement over the level they see now. For ex-ample, 1km away from the cabinet, the download speed should be around 28Mbps.

Q: How long will it take from ordering until I benefit from superfast broadband?

A: Even if you need to order a new line into your property (if you don’t already have a telephone line), it’s likely that

this will take between 8-10 working days.

Your Beavers need you! Beaver Scouts are the youngest section of the scouting community. 1

st Southoe and Buckden Scouts are looking for new adult volunteers (18+

years old) to help run the Beaver Colony for 6 to 8 year old children. We meet on Mondays between 18.00 -19.15 (term time only) at the Scout Hut in Buckden.

The wide ranging program we offer to our Beavers means that anyone is capable of being a Beaver Leader whatever your skills or background, and there are training opportunities availa-ble for Leaders to enhance or learn new skills.

The roles are fun and rewarding and you don’t need to be available every week as we operate a rota for leaders.

Sadly, without new adult helpers the Colony will face the possibility of closure in Spring 2014.

If you can give a couple of hours a week to help run evenings please contact: Aidan Joy (01480 810347) or Michelle Duckworth (01480 819461) or email: [email protected]

Darker evenings - burglary prevention Police across the county are reminding residents to take secu-rity precautions as the evenings draw in. A few simple steps can help keep homes and the possessions they contain more secure. This advice is part of the force's award-winning 'Get Closer' campaign which aims to reduce victims of crime.

Burglary can be an opportunist offence so temptation can be removed by keeping possessions out of sight and making a home look like someone's in. Security alarms and lights can be a worthwhile investment to deter offenders and could save a

lot of time and inconvenience in the long run.

Police are offering the following advice:

Invest in a security light and alarm to deter burglars. Burglar alarms are shown to be the number one deterrent.

Use a timer switch for lights when you are not in, so your home looks occu-pied.

Make sure you lock your front and back doors and secure all windows, including upstairs, before leaving.

Beware of bogus callers. If somebody knocks at your door, be wary. Most utility companies do not cold call. Ask to see photo ID and call the company for confirmation. Genuine callers do not mind calling back another time or for you to make an arranged appointment with the company.

For more information about security contact your local com-munity safety team on 101 or visit the force website at http://www.cambs.police.uk/

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commis-sioning Group (CCG) who commission health services in the area are asking local residents to familiarise themselves with the range of local health services and which illnesses and injuries they can treat. Last year it cost the local NHS £2million treating people in A&E when they could have used a different service. This could have treated 500 heart attack patients or bought 250 hip replacements.

Here’s a reminder of what local NHS services can treat.

Pharmacies can help with bugs and viruses, skin conditions, allergies, and help with stopping smoking.

GPs can help with back ache, ear aches, painful coughs, mental health conditions and any illness or injury that won’t go away. There’s also an out of hours GP service which can be accessed by calling your usual GP practice number and following the instructions.

The Walk-in Centre in St Neots at 24 Moore's Walk can help with minor burns and scalds, bites and stings and strains and sprains.

Or you can look after colds, coughs, sore throats, hangovers, stomach upsets, grazes can all be treated at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

Dr David Irwin GP in Buckden and Little Paxton and from Hunts Care Partners Local Commissioning Group said, “Winter brings more coughs, colds and flu so it is a good idea to be prepared and to make sure you have a supply of remedies at home to help care for you and your family over the holiday period. If you need a regular prescription for a long term condition, please check now to make sure that you have enough to last you over the holiday season, and go to your GP or pharmacist to collect any prescriptions in good time before the holidays.”

WE NEED YOU! Cambridgeshire County Council needs you to help change the lives of local children and young people. Foster Carers provide a stable family support network for local children and young people when they are unable to live with their own family. Every year we have over 425 children and young people looked after by Cambridgeshire County Council.

The shortage of Foster Carers means that children and young people are placed with (independent foster carers or residential units some outside of Cambridgeshire) they may also be looked after within the county chil-dren’s homes. We need to recruit more Foster Carers in order to give them the best possible future.

Foster Carers come from all different kinds of back-grounds. It may be that you have your own children or you may have worked with children before. You may have no experience of children or possibly considering a career change?

Every child is different so we need different Foster Car-ers, if you can offer stability, security and the positive experience of a loving family then we want to hear from you.

You might be: • Married, in a civil partnership, single or living with a partner

• From an ethnic background • In a same sex relationship • In work, unemployed or retired

Recruiting local people will mean that children and young people can live in their own community, continue to attend the same school and maintain contact with their family and friends.

We offer generous allowances including a start up pack-age, 24 hr support and full training.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH We have two reminders this month.

Although there have been no reported items in the village the Police have alerted me to the fact that there has been a huge increase in bike thefts in and around the Huntingdon areas. They have asked that anyone with a cycle should ensure to always lock it up, leave it in well-lit public areas, remove per-sonal items and consider making a permanent mark and registering on Immobilise or BikeRegister - full details are on the Cambs police website.

Remember not to leave packaging of new goods outside property during the festive season as it will

draw attention to the fact there are new goods on site.

Healthwatch Cambridgeshire; your spotlight on health and social care Healthwatch Cambridge-shire is the new champion for people using local health and social care services; we launched in July 2013. We work to ensure that people’s voices are heard in making important decisions about local NHS, social care and public health services.

We talk to people in the local community about their

experience of the care they receive to help us under-

stand how well local care services are working. We

make sure we feed this information back where it mat-

ters to the people buying, providing and regulating

local care services.

Tell us about your health / social care experiences We want to hear about the good and not so good, as this feedback can help improve care for everyone.

Join our Consultation Network, which will connect you with organisations that should know about your experi-ences and opinions of care in Cambridgeshire.

Get problems resolved… We can make sure you know where to go if you need to sort out a prob-lem with a local care provider. We can give you infor-mation about how different complaints systems work and who can help you get your complaint resolved.

Find out about local care. We are developing a Sign-posting & Information Service, to help you find out about your choice of health & social care services.

Find out more about Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and get involved by calling us on 01480 420628, emailing [email protected] or visit our website www.healthwatchcambridgeshire.co.uk

More older and vulnerable people are requiring homecare to en-sure they feel safe, happy and independent. To achieve this, the County Council is recruiting compassionate and caring people to start a career in care through a unique apprenticeship programme that enables them to “earn while they learn” by supporting them to get a job with a local homecare provider whilst being paid the standard rate of a care worker.

If you want to make a positive difference to people’s lives and would be interested in a career in care, contact Emma Laskey-MacRae, Apprenticeship Project Coordinator on 07917 615360, email [email protected] for more information about this unique apprenticeship programme. Your age and background doesn’t matter, if you are looking for a career in care somewhere in your community there’s a job you can do to help others.

Did we get it right? The Cambridgeshire Health and wellbeing board has reviewed local pharmaceutical services – services that help you get and use medicines or medical equipment safely. Our views are written up in the Pharmaceutical Needs Assess-ment. We want to know if you agree with what we’ve written.

We are asking for your feedback during 4th December 2013 – 14th February 2014. You can complete a questionnaire, either at your local pharmacy, dispensing doctor surgery, or online at

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal - 2013 To all of you who donated Christmas shoeboxes and monitory contributions, a very big THANK YOU on behalf of Samaritan’s Purse. As a village, we collected 32 boxes this year and your generosity will bring a smile to underprivileged children in Kosovo this Christmas.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and wish you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year. Moira Young
