SPAI-FESPA

IN MY OPINION

Hi Friends,

As the Chairman of the Awards Committee of SPAI (Screen Printers' Association of India), I am glad to announce the mega event “SPAI – FESPA Awards 2017

By floating the above thought provoking question, our editor has collected as many as ten inspiring responses from screen printing experts, manufacturers, suppliers and associations. I thank all of them for responding to the question.

According to my guru, Michel Caza, the cited question is an “important and fascinating” subject of discussion. Here below

is my view point. And for others views, refer to page.12-13.

Screen printing has now emerged as an interesting printing technology, behind which there is a science too. And without understanding this 'science and technology', one cannot achieve perfection and success in screen printing, I mean knowledge is the key to success.

My company has made big investment in education by setting up an ultra modern screen printing training facility called DMI. Screen printing is an art and millions of people worldwide are passionate about screen printing. And that is reflected in my DMI's regular houseful workshops which are not only attended by screen printers, but offset, digital printers, designers, manufacturers, etc. I and DMI's facilities, faculties are

“Screen Printing Process is Changing, but not becoming Obsolete. Why?”busy throughout the year in R&D, innovation, Workshops, hands on training in screen printing.

So, there is no chance of screen printing becoming 'OBSOLETE', and that is why in all my workshops I make it a point to inspire participants by raising a slogan: 'Screen Printing Zindabad,' meaning Long Live Screen Printing … and it will.

on 14th September 2017 at GOA”. As you must be aware, I was also the PRESIDENT of SPAI, till 2016. During my tenure similar event was successfully held in Mumbai last year. The Award Nite-2017 is scheduled to be held at Holiday Inn Resort, Mobor Beach, Cavelossim, Goa on 14th September 2017, the best season to enjoy this tourist hotspot. There will be international printing experts coming to India to judge the best entries and select the awards.

It's a WIN-WIN opportunity because when you send your entries you are also entitled for 1 night stay which includes, lunch on arrival, cocktail & dinner at the GALA NITE, breakfast next day morning plus pick up and drop from GOA airport or Madgaon Railway Station. The Awards Gala Nite will be packed with lots of fun and entertainment programs. This is a great opportunity for all printers to NETWORK with

industry experts / manufacturers / suppliers / consultants and other printers. For your information all entries will be displayed at the SPAI-FESPA AWARDS GALA NITE in GOA. For more details, please turn to page 5.

So, do send in your entries to the SPAI-FESPA award competition before 20th August 2017. Good luck for the SPAI-FESPA Award competition! And my best wishes are with you.

"DMI is truly an International Screen Printing Institute!"

DMI is truly an international screen printing institute! As a supplier of screen printing materials and Grafica machinery, we would be able to effectively assist customers. Lawrence Singh, NSDS,

I felt that as an ink manufacturer, we must have proper knowledge/ technical data of ink performance in relation to various other factors in garment printing including screen making. In this regard I really value and appreciate DMI's effort. Also, it was great opportunity to mingle with so many garment printing professionals.Takaya Uenishi, Matsui Shikiso,

While many of the garment printers in India do not find time for themselves to upgrade knowledge in textile screen printing, the recent DMI's 'HOUSEFUL' workshop (17-19 July 2017) had 19 overseas participants (South Africa - 10 participants, Egypt - 5, Japan - 1, Nepal - 2 and Sri Lanka - 1). In all there were 59 participants. So, DMI is now truly an international screen printing institute! “We had an exhilarating experience! We would like to come again,” said one of the enthusiastic participants. Here below are feedbacks of some of the participants.

As a manufacturer of kids wear, Ludhiana-based JSR Garments used to outsource their garment printing requirement. Later they set up a huge manual screen printing facility with long printing tables and hand operated carousel machines. After understanding the great advantages of automation, a year ago, the company invested in GraficaTex and nano-prinTag plus. However, the management realized that unless and until right knowledge is acquired one cannot achieve better results on automatic screen printing machines. So, they followed it up with an aggressive knowledge upgradation mission; their top management attended DMI's workshops, closely interacted with Bhargav Mistry, Director of DMI during his visit to Ludhiana. As they started implementing the knowledge and changed the age old methods, they witnessed dramatic quality improvement and faster turn-around of jobs. And the real benefit of automation was felt in their balance sheet as well. Started with a small garment manufacturing unit for women wear in 1990, JSR Garments has now grown big. Its current facility for kids wear manufacturing is

spread over 3 buildings (around 45000 sq.ft or 5000 gaj) which also houses a large capacity inhouse textile screen printing unit and a Sublimation printing unit. The company also has complete screen making set up. Interview: Why did you opt for Grafica? Grafica helped us streamline our production as we were moving out from manual printing to automation. We also got immense technical support from Grafica. In addition, we closely interacted with Bhargav Mistry during his visit to Ludhiana. Our team had also attended DMI workshop on advanced textile screen printing. Why did you set up inhouse DTG screen printing unit? We have been already using one GraficaTex for all-over printing of kids wear and one nano-prinTag plus for printing small area upto 10” x 8”. Being a manufacturer of garments, we found it profitable to have an inhouse garment printing facility rather than outsourcing. Earlier we used to completely outsource printing. Now, we have inhouse garment printing unit. There is logistic convenience and complete

freedom when it comes to garment printing, creativity and R&D. However, sometimes if the load is more we outsource printing. And why did you go for automation? There are two main reasons: 1) Quality improvement2) Productivity enhancement What's trend in kids wear printing? In the Girls segment, 70% wear come with prints and rest rolled out with embroidery or without print. Whereas in the Boys segment about 60% merchandise rolled out with print and rest come either without print or mix of print and embroidery. We also print various Special effects such as High density, crack, flock, foil, emboss, etc. Since we are manufacturer of kids wear, we use only certified Eco friendly inks which are compliance to international standards. You have Inhouse Design? Yes we have have a design department with 3 graphic designers. We change designs based on our own market research and reports on market trends/fashion trends. For e.g.

now the 1990s fashion is coming back again; also every 6 months fashion trend changes.

JSR Garments begins revamping its manual DTG screen printing unit with nano-prinTag plus & GraficaTex

DMI Experience: “I appreciate Bhargav for his noble thoughts of imparting knowledge to screen printers!” Gaurav Arora, Moda Creations, Ludhiana. “DMI is a beautiful centre for learning screen printing.” Shaikh Mousthapha, Moda Creations, Ludhiana. “We gained valuable knowledge in pre press, photoshop, screen washing/reclaiming. We have understood that pre press is important aspect of garment printing; quality can never be achieved unless screens are properly made. We also got some tips on how to improvise the designs. We learnt color separation technique, spot and CMYK printing. Back home, we found amazing results after following these DMI tips; many of our problems in screen making have also been now resolved. What was started as a commercial printing company 15 years ago, SJS Printers now supplies wide variety of garment tags and heat transfers. The company has deployed Grafica Nano-Print for screen printing value added garment tags and heat transfers. The machine's spare capacity is used for offering spot UV on job work basis. The company prints tags on Paper, non tear-able paper, kraft paper, hand-made paper upto 500-600 gsm and offset printed upto 350 gsm. “The demand for screen printed garment tags is growing,” says Surya Kumar. “Why, because there is a depth of color in screen printing than offset. With screen printing we can print on wide variety of papers, including hand-made papers and non paper substrates with thicker gsm. And we can also use various UV special effects with high emboss which is not possible by offset.”

And, before buying Grafica Nano-Print plus, we had 5 manual printing tables,” says Anthony Raj.

Interview with Anthony Raj:

Your current business and growth:We offer Spot UV, hot stamping, lamination and other print finishing service to nearly 300 offset printers. We are also into Packaging. We have a year on year growth of 20-30%.

Your views about Grafica:We tried other local screen printing machine but it did not serve our purpose. We opted for Grafica which is a well known company in screen printing machinery. Grafica Nano-Print plus is easy to use as compared to other brands. We had no service issue either.

Arputha Prints is managed by 4 brothers (all are married with kids), viz, Joseph, Anthony Raj (who worked in Menaka Card for 13 years), Jesi (who had a tailoring business), Selva Kumar (a recording technician).

The company was set up in 2002 by Anthony Raj who had worked in the famous Menaka Cards for 13 years. At one point of time they were staying in a rented home and their printing press was also housed on a rented place (500 sq.ft) with a couple of used machinery and equipment. “We started off with manual Screen printing (one table). Then we shifted to a little bigger rented place of 700 sq.ft. Now we have over 25 types of machinery and equipment, all housed on our own industrial property admeasuring

st3400 sq.ft x 2 (ground + 1 floor).

After sweating in his paddy field for over 10 years, Ashok Babu, owner of BPL Print'z, found a greener pasture in the world of screen printing.

“Our family could not bear the mounting losses in agriculture. And depending fully on agriculture to run the family was risky affair. Hence I was advised by my well wisher, who has a printing business, to start screen printing as an alternative source of income,” recalls Ashok Babu, whose 1200 sq.ft printing unit is located at Kandukur in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.

“In 2012, I started with manual screen printing. While I and my wife used to print the jobs, my dad

would put the prints on drying racks. Let me tell you manual screen printing was

worst than working in our paddy field. Both of us experienced pain in hand as we started printing bigger size jobs in bulk quantities. It was difficult for us to complete the orders on time. Enough was enough, while searching on the net I found a beautiful Nano-Print plus. I cross checked about this machine with my friend in Nellore who also uses Nano-Print.”

“I recovered my investment within a year. Now with Nano-Print plus I and my wife print multi color sunpack jobs (2 ft x 3 ft) with joy and comfort. I owe my success to Grafica screen printing machine which requires very low maintenance and easy to use,” asserts Ashok Babu.

Ganesh Babu, proprietor of Sreegiri Printers, Haripad a town in south-west Kerala, struggled for over 15 years in manual screen printing. His struggle ended when he bought Grafica Nano-Print along with Nano-UV and Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1.

“Mine is a small printing business catering to customers in about 15 km radius. Manual screen printing is tedious, time consuming and quality was never upto the mark whether it in wedding card, stickers, etc. And I had not time for creativity. So I decided to go for automation after seeing Grafica's machine at an exhibition,” recalls Ganesh Babu.

Sreegiri Printers undertakes a wide range of commercial printing such as wedding cards, invitations, stickers, advertising display boards on sunpack, flag and t-shirt printing and stationery items,” says Ganesh.

'Screen Printing Process is Changing ... Screen Printing Changes… Yes ... Enormously!

The question – ‘Screen Printing Process is Changing, but not becoming Obsolete, why?’ is a subject of gréât importance and fascinating too! I would say: Screen Printing Changes… Yes ... Enormously! As for becoming “obsolete”, it is a false belief. On the contrary screen printing is in full ‘rush and gush’! Why?

Firstly, because the variety of screen printing applications is incredibly high, much more than all

other printing processes. Secondly, because screen printing has evolved, by reducing or removing its weak points in the workflow. Also, because it has evolved technically, especially in the field of the fabrication of screens and its adaptability to the deposit of all kinds of products, not just inks.

What has changed in relation to the past, if I may say so, is take it as an image, its "change of environment".

Michel Caza France, Past-President, FESPA

Wait, my 2500+ words article with great explanation on this subject will be published in the coming issues of Grafica News India!

Screen printing is an incredibly powerful process

Screen printing is an incredibly powerful process particularly for truly innovative graphics and industrial decoration.

At FESPA 2017 (8-12 May, Hamburg, Germany) we witnessed an 15% increase in screen printing exhibitors compared with FESPA 2015 in Cologne. This shows us that, while the rate of technological development in screen printing may have slowed over recent years, there is still demand in the

industry for screen technology and consumables and growing interest in screen printing for industrial applications. We are also seeing exhibitors launch hybrid technology combining the best of both processes. Over the years, I have met with a wide variety of printers and manufacturers who use screen printing as an integral part of their business and who are looking to invest even further in this technology.

FESPA was born out of the screen printing industry 50 years ago and as such it plays an important role in our history and future. It is our view that screen printing remains an important place in the market for certain volumes and applications. Our job as the international federation is to inspire printers and businesses that use wide format printing to really understand the power of print.

Neil Felton CEO, FESPA

I cannot think of any technology which can do the work Screen printing is doing at that price

As long as any technology can change with times and deliver the required result, it will not become obsolete. I cannot think of any technology which can do the work Screen printing is doing at that price. The price performance ratio of screen printing is amazing. With a small investment, I can produce magic. See DMI’s latest table calendar. What mind boggling effects have been created and with very simple equipment. So please be rest assured that screen printing is going to alive and do well in times to come.

Screen printers have to diversify and expand their portfolio

The automotive, telecom, electrical, textiles industries are all driving growth in the screen printing industry. There is a shift from basic jobs like visiting cards and envelopes to complex assignments. The previous ‘cheaper pricing’ mindset has been replaced with quality benchmarks and value addition.

The printers now go in for good quality processes. New presses are far more productive than previous

generations, with automation and control systems simplifying the operation of the equipment.

Screen printing remains an important decoration process because it’s a versatile, efficient and cost effective process whereas other printing methods have their limitations. Digital is certainly present but if a printer wants to be successful he needs to have both, so screen will never disappear.

Survival in a competitive scenario dictates a ‘do or die’ attitude. Screen printers have not ignored the seriousness of the situation. They are aware that there are other industry segments standing there to take away their share of the pie. Intense efforts are necessary to emerge a winner in a scenario that poses challenges and offers us opportunities as well.

The Screen Printing Process had to evolve and be aggressive. Instead of trying to hold on to what is in hand, which could fall away like grains of sand, screen printers have diversified and expanded their portfolio.

Anil BrahmbhattSkyscreen India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai

In textile, screen printing is going to be there for sure

Many Screen Printers are changing to Digital Printing in Garment Industry but Screen Printing Process will not become obsolete. Still Garment manufacturers are asking for Glitter, Foil, HD, and Silicon prints which are not possible by Digital. We have observed in the last 5 years that Sublimation Printing has started in India and it has developed new market. Likewise now, Digital Printing on Cotton has started but it has developed new market for Digital Printing and it is not affecting regular

screen printing market.

In short, screen printing is going to be there for sure. In the long term, the percentage of screen printing may get reduced little but certainly it will not obsolete.

Screen printing process “Old but not obsolete”!

“Screen Printing Process is Changing, but not becoming Obsolete. Why?” When first confronted with the question, I immediately thought of a notable fitting line from a popular Hollywood actor who famously avowed, “Old but not obsolete!” Contrary to the belief of many, let’s try to see why this process is aptly becoming the antithesis of decline and ultimately obsolescent.

I agree, screen printing is an old but very much a tried and tested process. However, it is far from being obsolete. Unlike with other printing technologies, new markets are constantly being created, where the only sustainable solution to successfully produce an image, or apply a special conformal surface coating, is by screening due to its innate ability to generously adapt — not replace!

Mike YoungImagetek Consulting International, USA

Watch out for my full article with great explanation on this subject to be published in the coming issues of Grafica News India.

The digital challenges forced us to be better and look for new opportunities. Here are 10 results of being challenged.

1. The challenges of digital printing technology have forced screen printers to become better and more productive. This resulted in screen printing being more competitive against all forms of printing.

2. Nothing can compare to the versatility of screen printing. Ink deposits we can achieve cannot be produced by any other form of printing.

3. New technology in circuits, solar panels, specialty inks and other high tech printing can

only be achieved with screen printing. 4. Graphics: Between the short run and the long run, screen print is still

the best option. 5. Graphic screen printing quality has improved because of the digital

print challenge. Digital has eliminated the poor quality, weak graphics screen printers and now the best of the best have plenty of work. It’s called a “shakeout” of the market. The best, the fastest, the most productive are competing very well with digital medium size runs.

6. Rigid and thick substrates. Screen is the only choice on some materials.

7. Ink cost: Most of the time screen ink is less than half the cost of digital ink.

8. Ink changes possible in minutes. It is impossible to change inks for exotic substrates on a digital press. Screen printers can change ink lines several times a day to achieve adhesion on multiple substrates with almost no extra labor costs or down time.

9. Ink coverage: Large solid areas of light colors on dark substrates are possible with screen ink.

10. Low cost prototype production. It is relatively inexpensive to setup and run a test part with screen printing.

Mike Ruff Chairman, Academy of Screen and Digital Printing Technologies (ASDPT), USA

Screen Printing will never get obsolete

Screen Printing is an innovative method to express the vividness of true colours, textures, form, scale and depth of resolutions.

The advent of digital technology and its adaptation in modern times is the alternative for quick reproduction, small volumes and lower cost solution. Considering the adaptability of digital printing may be the best economical alternative to most applications but is limited too. It’s not only the

cost or the batch size or the simplicity of the multiple colours required which shall determine the technology to be adapted, the best designs may be a combination of Digital and Screen where the additional process of screen Printing shall actually enhance the base digital print with textures and highlights.

So, Screen Printing shall never get obsolete, the processes shall change with better technology, which shall continuously enhance the true depth and vividness of colour, sharpness, resolution and its form and scale.

Sanjay Mehta Protolab Electrotechnologies Pvt. Ltd., Navi Mumbai

Screen Printing is a very versatile technology encompassing varied applications

From India's perspective I have witnessed a sea change in the quality of the Screen Printing process within the industry. From predominantly a manual printing process, Screen Printing is now mostly mechanised. Screen printers have embraced science and technology. This has resulted in consistent and better quality prints.

Screen Printing is a very versatile technology encompassing varied applications. Thus it is

difficult for other competing printing technologies to easily dislodge Screen Printing from many of these applications.

During the last decade Screen Printing has yielded lot of ground to digital printing technology in wide format graphics. However, in industrial and garment printing applications Screen Printing is still growing and will continue to do so in the future. Hence it would be too premature to write an obituary for Screen Printing!

Ganesh KrishnanExecutive Director, Fujifilm Sericol India Pvt Ltd.

Screen printing continues to gain momentum in manufacturing and industry

Does the new, hyper-connected business world mean the ‘end’ of screen printing? No, it doesn’t. Many applications exist, particularly in manufacturing, that are crying out for the quality and characteristics that screen printing – and in some cases, screen printing alone – provides. So, Screen printing continues to gain momentum in manufacturing and industry.

Rajesh Kumar, a Mechanical engineer and his brother Tanuj Sawhney (B.Tech), partners of Faridabad based Dev Labels/Dev Print N Pack, unanimously say that Grafica Nano-Print plus is a compatible screen printing machine for heat transfer printing. The brothers run two businesses under the names: 1) Dev Print N Pack – heat

transfer printing – mainly catering to exporters.

2) Dev Labels – garment tags, washcare labels, size labels in satin and taffeta for garments industries, barcode stickers and stationary printing etc.

“Investing in Grafica’s Nano-Print plus was not only a judicious decision but also a big game changer. That’s because we were struggling hard to improve quality and production by manual screen printing. Once Grafica screen printing system was in place we could see a dramatic change in our business viz,” says Rajesh Kumar. According to him, the advantages of automation are: ! Quality improvement ! Deliver jobs on time

! Over 60% jump in production ! Customers satisfaction ! Overall growth in business

“With such impact, we felt we should have gone for Grafica machine 7-8 years ago because we made a mistake of investing in a cheaper local machine which failed our automation drive. As a new entrant into screen printing, I feel business dream cannot be achieved unless we adopt automation,” says Rajesh Kumar. He shares an interesting aspect of heat transfers market. “Our Export market customers are quality conscious and not price conscious; whereas in domestic market customers are price conscious and often use low quality heat

transfers. Our quality transfers certainly carry higher price because we use quality input.”

And he asserts that mere investment in a quality screen printing machine does

not bring quality. “When we had manual screen printing, we used to print with cheap inks of around Rs.200/kg; but once automation was in place we started using superior quality inks of around Rs. 1000/- kg upto Rs.5500/- kg of world renowned brands, and other high quality Indian brands also, besides making superior quality screens to get better quality output.”
