Recycle and Reuse School
Supplies
The end of the school year
will soon be approaching
and the staff at Grafton Ele-
mentary would like to make
things a little easier for the
GES families. Whenever
possible, we are encourag-
ing students to reuse their
current school supplies for
the 2012-2013 school year.
We are hopeful that this will
be a great teaching tool for
students, while easing some
of the back to school costs
for parents.

Third Grade - Mrs. Zozak, Mrs. Gaulke, & Ms. Suhr
Before we went to the play, our class read the book of Charlotte’s Web and
watched the movie so we had an idea of what would happen at the play. We also prac-
ticed a song that would be sung at the play. The play was at West Bend High School’s
auditorium. It was cool how Charlotte made her webs. She hung little sparkly strings
up to the wood so it would make a web and spell the words. Wilbur was funny be-
cause he had funny reactions to things and got scared easily. It was cool how
Templeton was always changing his moods. He took a rotten egg from the mother
goose and Avery sat on it. It really smelled bad! Templeton got so fat at the end. He
and Wilbur made a deal that Templeton would get all the best food from Wilbur. At the
end of the play, we got to high five some of the characters. Their costumes were cool.
At one time, a disco ball was turning with lights. That was supposed to represent Char-
lotte’s babies floating away! She had over 500 babies!
Charlotte’s Web Play
On Wednesday, April 18, we put some bark chips in the
woods with our little buddy class (Mrs. Jarvis’ Kindergarten)
and with Mrs. Gaulke’s Third Graders. Some people form
Kohls Department Store came to help us, too. Some parents
came and helped, also. There were two trails and we had a
race to see who could put the bark chips on the trails the fast-
est! We planned this event to celebrate Earth Week and be-
cause we did this event, we earned a $1,500 grant from Kohls
to use for a “Go Green” project. We hope the money will be
used to help make our courtyard into a nice outdoor learning
center area, maybe even build raised garden beds to help
grow food to be used in the kitchen. This project helped us
learn how to be good citizens and help take care of our
planet!

Reading doesn’t go away during the summer; it may just look different. Here are some ideas to get you and your kids
started.
Combine activities with books. If you plan on going camping, have your child read a book of camping safety tips first.
Before a baseball game, have them read about a favorite player.
Sign up for a summer reading program at your local library. The librarians are a great resource for book suggestions as
well.
Go on an alphabetic scavenger hunt. Find items in your neighborhood that start with each letter of the alphabet. Acorn
could be for A, bird for B, car for C, and driveway for D.
Who says reading has to be from a traditional book? Other great reading materials are newspapers, magazines, cook-
books, comic books, instructions, and song lyrics.
Read a book and watch the movie. Some great titles include Shrek, Cat in the Hat, Charlotte’s Web, Harry Potter,
The Polar Express, Matilda, Wimpy Kid movies and The Lorax.
Ten or more books over the three month summer break will help kids maintain vocabulary and
comprehension skills. If your child is not reading chapter books yet, get them on tape or read the
book to your child. Both provide a different reading experience.
Have a great summer!

As the school year quickly winds down, we’d like to take a moment to highlight a few opportunities students have
during the summer months to continue with their reading.
The Grafton Public Library - Summer Reading Program – Dream Big…Read!
The children’s librarian from the Grafton Public Library was at GES the last week of May talking about
their reading program.
This is a great opportunity for the kids to receive fun incentives for the reading they do throughout the
summer months.
See the note sent home from the Grafton Public Library for more details.
John Long Middle School Library:
The JLMS Library offers summer hours where 5th grade students entering 6th grade in the fall can come
in, “checkout” the library, and “checkout” books. The library is open most Tuesdays 9:30-1:30.
This is another great chance for kids to become familiar with their new school along with taking a look
at some new titles available through the John Long library.
We’d like to take a moment to thank the following individuals who helped with classes and shelved books
throughout the school year:
Marla Aspenson, Monica Dempsey, Lisa Feld, Kerrie Herron, Carol Knott, Mary Luedtke, Chris Mursch, Stacy
Ringgold and Sharon Volkmann.
We truly appreciate all the hours you gave GES! THANK YOU!
