WHO IS CATCH UP?Catch Up is a not-for-profit charity which provides:

● comprehensive, integrated training and resource packages for organisations and staff, to support the delivery and management of Catch Up Literacy and Catch Up Numeracy

● ongoing support, through the Catch Up Community, for those who deliver Catch Up Literacy and Catch Up Numeracy to learners

Introduction

● Many adults suffer from disabling levels of anxiety about mathematics (Ashcraft and Faust, 1994)

● Many adults are open about not being able to do maths (Ashcraft and Faust, 1994)

● Most adults with low numeracy skills began experiencing difficulties with mathematics from as early as age 7 (Fennema, 1989)

PROBLEMS WITH NUMERACY

● Structured one-to-one intervention for learners who struggle with numeracy, based on Ann Dowker’s ten components of numeracy

● Targeted to the identified needs of the individual, and maximises the effective use of resources (including ‘Overcoming Barriers’) and approaches already available in classrooms

● Grounded in rigorous academic research, and shown to be effective in schools across 37 local authorities

● Available as part of an accredited comprehensive, integrated and award winning training and resource package that supports both management and delivery of the intervention

● those who are significantly below the expected National Curriculum Level for their age

● those whose Number/Maths Age is significantly below their Chronological Age

● those who find it difficult to learn in group situations


CATCH UP NUMERACY is suitable forall learners who struggle with numeracy

(working towards NC Level 1 or above) including:

● Catch Up Numeracy is designed for learners who struggle with numeracy rather than learners beginning numeracy

THE CATCH UP NUMERACY INTERVENTION

● Catch Up Numeracy is delivered by staff (including teachers, teaching assistants and carers) who have been trained by Catch Up

● All the guidance and proformas necessary to deliver Catch Up Numeracy are included in the training and resource package

● Catch Up Numeracy resources are to be used alongside the school’s collection of teaching materials and apparatus

● These Catch Up Numeracy Levels have been designed to make formative assessment and intervention practical to administer

A record is kept of the teaching and learning of each Individual teaching session

STAGE 4:Ongoing monitoring

The record kept of each Individual teaching session and the learner profile give valuable information about the learner’s needs and progress


We recommend that progress is also monitored by means of a standardised Number/Maths test

This should be administered at the beginning, mid-point and end of the year, as appropriate

The standardised test is most useful when it is first administered before the Catch Up Numeracy Formative assessments

OCN ACCREDITATION

● Catch Up Numeracy training is accredited by the Open College Network (OCN)

● Trainees submit evidence that they have successfully completed the training course assignments

● Submitting for the OCN accreditation is voluntary
