• Monitoring and alert system for the current evolution of crops and land use (From January to June)

Forecast based on:
Trade
• Food Consumption Panel (monthly catering industry/household consumption survey)
• Average sowing rates (Seeds used for the following sowing season)
• Information by industry/processors (manufacture of feeds, malt, ethanol, etc.)
• Information by cereals expert analysts
• Historical data/trends
• Intra EU - INTRASTAT system (Department of Customs and Special Taxes)
• Extra EU - Actual imports and exports (Department of Customs and Special Taxes)
• Applications for import/export licences (State Secretary for Foreign Trade)
• Information by commercial operators

Lack of detailed information
•No official statistics for some components of the balance (stocks, use…) and uncertainty on other figures (intra EU trade…)
•No mandatory declarations of farm/commercial stocks, use, etc.
•Low degree of interaction/coordination between the public and the private sector
Delay of the information available
•Extra EU trade (±6 weeks)
•Official crop production forecast (±2 months)
Difficulties in the use of historical data to make trends/models
•Climatic variability
