Rural India accounts for 70% of the countrys population. It has been the backbone for

development by lending hand to support food and manpower needs of the country. In spite

of this Rural India has not developed significantly.

When we think of rural India, the image that comes to our mind is children with tattered

clothes, people with no food, acute poverty and widespread diseases. But the reality can

never be stereotyped. We have a lot of villages where the scenario is entirely different and

so are the problems faced by the villagers.

We take you to such a village which is located on the outskirts of Delhi in Karala Village.

There the problem is not so much about money as it is about awareness and lack of skills.

People there have the resources but either they do not have opportunities or are simply

unaware of them. Navjyoti, an NGO set up by Ms Kiran Bedi (retired IPS officer), is working

in this village for the betterment of the people there.

This event provides you with the platform where you can work with and for the rural people

in solving their problems in real time.

    Navjyoti foundation

Navjyoti India Foundation, since the time of its inception in the year 1988, has witnessed

huge progress, both in terms of visibility as well as activity. From the journey that began

with community development initiatives, inclusive of Navjyoti Pathshala, Gali School,

Balwaris, learning centres, remedial education, night schools for children of different age

groups and vocational training program for women empowerment, Navjyoti has taken a

step ahead by getting itself registered with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

with the name of Navjyoti Community College (NCC).

    Ecosystem of the Problem

The village Karala is situated at the outskirts of Delhi in Rohini Sector 22. The entire setup

consists of village surrounded by colonies and unauthorized resettlements. Some level of

prosperity has come to the inhabitants of the village by selling off their lands which have

fetched them a handsome amount as a result of the recent real estate boom. But the

prosperity is limited to a small segment of people. There are others who still have a hard

    time making the ends meet.

The following gives the socio-economic status of the people of karala who fall under the

    latter category.

The potential and scope of development there is however huge. Being Situated near Delhi

gives it an economic advantage. With all the malls coming up in Rohini and with Metro

reaching there the employment opportunities are immense for the people, be it as

attendants at metro or accountants at malls. Besides there are many small scale industries

in the locality like block printing, utensil making etc which are very diverse in their character.

Add to all this, the enthusiasm of these people and their aspirations.

    Problem

Realizing the importance of skill development requirements of the locals to make them

employable Navjyoti has opened a Community College in Karala. NCC, the People's College,

envisions to widening and strengthening opportunities for creating human capital by

enhancing employability skills of the deserving and underprivileged. This is achieved through

transformative education thereby making them productive members of the society. It is a

community- based institution of higher education comprising of various courses, to focus on

skill development of the students, which will lead them towards productive employment.

In Karala they have started skill development programs on English and computer. Based on

the feedbacks of the students that have been enrolled in these courses, particularly the girl

students, they are also planning to start courses on beauty training. But still Navjyoti sees

that much is remained to be done. The opportunities are humongous but the ideas

generated have been limited so that is where the students from the management schools

    need to fill the gap.
