    Tense Review

1.- In this e-mail there are 30 silly (and quite common) grammatical mistakes. Can you

    correct them?

    Dear Marian,

Thank you for your letter. Its good to hear from you. How is (1) you getting on in

London? It is such a big city I bet you are getting (2) lost every day. What is life at the

university like? Are you like (3) it, or is the work too hard (4) than you expected?

I was sorry to hear about the weather. Did they not told (5) you that it rains quite a lot in

England, especially in the winter? But I dont think you will be going to have (6) too much

snow; you are in the south of the country.

You want me to tell you about how is life (7) here. Well, we are all still being busy (8)

preparing for our exams. Do you are studying (9) for tests every three months too? We are

always doing revising (10) for an exam. Anna has decided she is wanting to be (11) asurgeon, so she will be going to (12) work very hard this year to get good exam results. She

had been (13) watching a programme about hospitals on the TV and now she thinks she

will be wanting (14) to study medicine. It seems like a good idea for her; she is intelligent

and kind. But what about me? I have no idea what I want to do. I used to think I wanted to

do business studies, but I hate to be (15) in an office all day. You know how much I like

the outdoors. Last week I thought about doing horticulture. Dont laugh. I love plants and

flowers and all that kinds (16) of thing. And this (17) days lots of people is (18) moving

into houses with gardens. It could be the perfect job for the future. Anyway, I am going to

    (19) let you know when I am making (20) a decision, I promise. Who knows? Maybe I can

study in England like you; they have lots of famous gardens and parks there. Do you know

    why?

Have you hear (21) the news about Martin? They say he is will (22) marry Susana inAugust and they are still only 19! If you did not leave (23) him to go to university I am

not thinking (24) he would have started going out with Susana. I think you done (25) the

right thing; it is important to make a good decision about your future before you will (26)

think about getting married these days. My mother often tells me she got married too young

because she havent (27) got any idea about the future. Anyway, I hope you meet someone

nice in London, who is going to (28) show you all the best places to go. Then you could

take us to it (29) when we are coming (30) to visit you at Easter. Can you find us a cheap

youth hostel near your flat for the first week in April?

    Best wishes,

    David

The Mary Celeste (1) had always been an unlucky ship, but no one could have (2)

..................... what would happen to it when it set sail from New York in November

1872. The ship was heading for the port of Genoa in northern Italy with a cargo of

alcohol. The voyage (3) ..................... about five weeks, but the ship never arrived atits destination with its crew alive.

On board the ship were the captain, Captain Briggs, his wife and two-year-old

daughter, and a crew of seven sailors. After leaving New York harbour they were

The ship was seen off the Azores by a British ship called Dei Gratia. It appeared to be

were sent aboard to offer help. But the ship was found to be (6) ............... deserted.

Some of the sails had been damaged in a storm, but apart from that everything else

was in perfect condition. One small boat was missing, along with a map, and some

navigation equipment. So it was clear that the crew (7) ................. the ship voluntarily.

But why would they have left a large, well-equipped, safe ship to get into a much

smaller vessel in the middle of the ocean?

If they were forced to abandon the ship, was it because of pirates? In that case, why

was the cargo still intact? Nothing

    (8) ..................... . Had the ship been (9) ..................... by a huge sea monster? In those

days tales of enormous aquatic reptiles and monsters were very popular. Perhaps the

crew imagined, or really did see something so frightening they thought they had to

    escape.

The Mary Celeste (10) ..................... a legend. People still come up with theories about

her disappearance. Some people even believe that the crew were taken by an alien

spaceship and the captain and his wife got away in the life boat. To this day, no one

has offered an explanation which really makes sense.

Grammar Worksheet 11Definite / Indefinite articles

1.- Look at how the definite article - the - is used in the following sentences:

The food we eat today is quite different to the food our great-grandparents used to eat.

Food nowadays contains more additives than in the past.

In the first sentence we are comparing one specific thing to another. (Notice that you

are asked to look at the first sentence, not the second. There are only two and we are

making a comparison.) In the second sentence we are referring to food in general.

    Now read this paragraph:

In the past our ancestors built houses on the banks of a river so they had access to water.

These groups of houses became villages, then towns and then cities. The city of London,

which was once a small group of houses on the River Thames is a classic example of a

riverside development. Can you think of any more?

Why is London referred to as the city ofLondon?

2.- Look at these two sentences.

A river such as the Thames can be the life-blood of a city.

A river can provide drinking water, food, a way to keep clean and even a transport system.

Here we are generalising about the different advantages of building a town on the

banks of a river, and only name one specific river. It also mentions a way to keep

clean. Nowadays we dont throw ourselves into a river to wash ourselves, nor do we

take our washing to the water in big baskets; there are other ways to get clean. But do
