GRAND MARAIS A R T C O L O N Y
Dear Friends of the Grand Marais Art Colony,
Spring is a perfect time to celebrate our member artists and their beautiful work on display at the Art Colony’s Member Show. It is also a wonderful time of year to recognize the many friendships that the Art Colony values with our students, instructors, artists, patrons, and community. We thank you for your past and future involvement with our organization.
2017 was a banner year at the Art Colony! Celebrating our 70th Anniversary, the Art Colony has fostered decades of artistic experiences that make Grand Marais a special place - one that is alive with creative opportunity for the young and old to learn about art, develop new skills, or experience the world through another’s perspective.
As I reflect on the past year at the Art Colony, I want to acknowledge the growth of the organization. The additional new staff members, along with the continued talented personnel, bring talents and skills that help the Art Colony prepare for a strong future. The renovation of the Historic Building helps us maximize the use of our facilities. The Art Colony added additional quality programming and instructors to serve over 1,000 students and saw a 30% increase in class success rate, hosting 89% of the classes offered in 2017. The festivals and symposiums sponsored by the Art Colony in the past year have been successful and well attended by local patrons and new Art Colony friends from around the country. The further development of Artist Services, including the Professional Practice Curriculum and the work with the Cook County Creative Economy Collaborative, has shined a focus on the importance of our local artists to the community and the need to support them in their efforts for continued success.
Organizational growth is both exciting and challenging. We are proud to serve our community with transformative art experiences. As we serve more people, we are diligently working to accommodate the growth and have continued to enhance our internal operations, fiscal stability as well as our facilities to accommodate this growth. As we look ahead to the next seventy years, we envision a thriving arts community where the Art Colony is at the heart of supporting the enduring human need for creative expression and inspiration.
Thank you for taking this journey with us. We are grateful to serve this incredible community.
Sally Berg, Chair of the Art Colony Board of Directors

MISSION
The Grand Marais Art Colony provides services to artists, promotes art education and nurtures art in our community through an environment of creative excellence.
WHO WE ARE
At the Grand Marais Art Colony, we exist to support the enduring human need for creative expression and inspiration. Artists and creative seekers of all levels come from across the country to learn from renowned instructors, create art, and engage together in artistic inquiry. Here you will find a welcoming community that embraces the formative first stages, as well as acts of creative risk-taking and self-discovery; an immersive gathering place for exchanging ideas, inspirations and techniques, allowing your ideas to germinate and the space and time you need to be artistically present. Nestled between the horizon line of Lake Superior and the wilderness of boreal forests and serene lakes, we invite you to step away from the bustle of daily life and journey with us.
WHAT WE BELIEVE:
• Artistic expression connect us with our internal and external landscapes• Artists need time, space, and uninterrupted focus to create work• Mentorship and guidance are critical for all stages of creative development• Dialogue enhances the artistic process and develops shared understanding• Connecting through the arts builds healthy and resilient communities
