Air India made its presence felt at India Aviation 2014, the fourth edition of the popular civil avia-tion Exhibition & Conference in India, held at

Women’s Day was a truly international celebration across all Air India centres

What better honour for women than giving them a whole day to showcase

their skills? On the occasion of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2014, Air India operated several, all-women crew flights from dawn until dusk. These included two international flights – New Delhi to Singapore and New Delhi to New York. The Delhi-Singapore flight was operated by Capt S Trehan and Capt Jasdeep, while the flight from Delhi to New York was operated by Capt Kshamta Bajpai and Capt Swati Rawal.

The presence of women was strong in the Indian skies as well. The Delhi-Bangalore-Delhi sector saw a Boeing 787’s first flight with an all-woman crew, operated by Capt M Bedi and Capt Yashima Singh. The Bangalore-Delhi-Bangalore flight, along with the Mumbai-Chennai-Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram sector, also saw all-women staff on

board. The Chennai flight was re-ceived at Thiruvananthapuram by Executive Director Meenakshi Dua.

For most of these flights, techni-cal services were also provided by women aircraft engineers, techni-cians and flight despatchers. The non-technical work on the ground too was handled by women duty managers, counter staff, helpers and even medical doctors.

The airline’s foray into all-women crew flights dates back to November 1985 when an all-women cockpit crew operated a Fokker Friendship flight from Kolkata to Silchar. Over the years, Air India has operated innumerable all-women crew domestic and international flights. For the first time in aviation history, Air India operated an ultra long-haul flight from Mumbai to New York with an all-women crew to commemorate the occasion in 2010 and followed it with another long haul flight on Delhi-Toronto

sector in 2011.Air India has over 4,500 women

employees, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of its total workforce, in-cluding 158 women pilots, of whom 12 are commanders flying its fleet of wide and narrow body aircraft, 1,470 cabin crew, 23 aircraft main-tenance engineers, 58 technicians and 52 executives.

The women employees celebrated the occasion at Air India, Headquar-ters, Delhi. The events included music and poetry recitations by em-ployees. On this occasion. the wom-en employees presented bouquets to CMD Rohit Nandan and CVO Sundari Subramanium Pujari. While addressing the employees, ED P&IR Deepa Mahajan em-phasised that the contemporary women employees should be aware and enterprising and act without fear. Those present put their good wishes, thoughts and feelings on the “Board of Expressions” in words. S

An Air India miniature made of paper

Paper planes are part of playful childhood memories for many of us. These are pushed to

the background as years go by. But not in the case of 22-year-old Luca Iaconi-Stewart of California. He has never flown by Air India, but the paint scheme and design of Air India B-777-300ER aircraft, in particular the beautiful arches on the windows, stirred the creative streak in Luca. And the outcome? A near-perfect miniature three-dimensional rep-lica of the aircraft….using 30,000 pieces of paper! Luca has meticu-lously fabricated the model entirely out of used cream colour manila file folders.

He studied a seat map of the plane and used the graphic design

software Adobe Illustrator to “re-verse engineer” the plane, trans-lating two-dimensional computer drawings into the complex curves of the plane.

It has taken Luca nearly 10,000 hours over six years to design and assemble the model, which is 60 times smaller than the original plane but with startling precision. It has a turbofan engine, cockpit and realistic renditions of the complete cabin. He learned to build models with manila files during a two-year architecture course, with a heavy emphasis on the arts and experiential learning. The project cost him only around $100. Some day, Luca hopes to display the Air India model at a museum. This architect can be reached at [email protected]
