FEEL THE LOVE!!!.........................................................................................................PC40

YES, feel the LOVE!!! It’s that time of year and the YC is abuzz w/ activity. We’ve just finished the Umpteenth (8th or 9th???) Annual Hound Dog Regatta w/ at least 4 or 5 boats coming from foreign waters and we are all craving for more racing activity!!! Cudo’s to those of you that took part, Con-grat’s to those that won some swag, and SHAME on you for those that did not turn out!!! Next year we are counting on YOU!!!

Lots of events coming up w/ the Leukemia Cup on July 4th for a great cause. If you haven’t signed up yet, do it now and start some serious fundraising. This will be a GREAT event w/ lots of fun on the water followed by a SILENT AUCTION!!!, a PIG ROAST!!!, and FIREWORKS!!!

Friday, July 6th, is the Annual TACS Cherry Pit Jr. Regatta on Boardman Lake and, if you don’t know what TACS is stop me anywhere, anytime for a “brief” explanation!!! We are expecting kids from all over NW MI and maybe even some down-staters as well to participate in this event. If you haven’t experienced kids having FUN!!! on the water, you need to come out for this event!!! OH, and by the way, TACS is currently raising funds for their BOATHOUSE and if you would like to contribute we would greatly appreciate your support. Details at the BAR or w/ any TACS Board Member.

The rest of July brings us the Interlake Regatta on the 21st and 22nd and a Long Distance Race on the 28th (TC - Suttons Bay) as well as the Mackinac races and a few other events. Also, I’m sure that many will be crusing up to Beaver, Mackinac, or even the North Channel. August will be more of the same I hope and we WILL see you at the RED FOX!!!

All the final preparations are coming into focus for the Leuke-mia Cup Regatta to be held July 4th at GTYC. We have se-cured some fabulous items to be used in the silent auction in-cluding rounds of golf from local courses, food items, and great giveaways from the National Sponsors including Mount Gay Rum and West Marine, among many others. The format will be very similar to a typical Wednesday night race with plans to do 2-3 races depending on conditions. We

will be offering a Racing fleet, a JAM fleet and an Open division for those wishing to race a multihull, Laser or other sailboat. There will be a pig roast dinner will the trimmings follow-ing the afternoon festivities, along with aforementioned silent auction and the bar will be open all night to enjoy the 4th of July fireworks on the front lawn. The entry fee is a$75 which is a tax deductible contribution to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. All the proceeds from this event go the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fund-ing blood cancer research, education and patient services. Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $486 million into research, which has led to advances in diagnosis and treatment and improving the overall survival rate of patients diagnosed with blood cancers. The Notice of Race is posted at GTYC and will be emailed to the membership as well. Please contact Jamie or Laura Stuursma at [email protected] with any questions.

Greetings Laser Sailing fans!! The summer is rolling and the Laser fleet is off to a rousing start. We have had great weather for the 4 Tuesdays in June and have had some spectacular sailing and close racing. We have had 21 different boats racing during the month of June with a high of 16 on two nights. Come join the fun, there are many levels of skills out sailing as well as many age brackets, from the Dirk Phelps and his small sail to the “experienced” Ned Lockwood still teaching us all some lessons. We capped off the month of June with Hot Dog party after sailing with monthly awards, a prac-tice that will continue throughtout the summer on the last Tuesday of July and August, so come join us for some sailing and even some Hot Dog eating at the end of July. Jason Massaroni sailed very well to take top honors for the month of June. Congrats Jason! We also had some great Jr. sailors making tre-mendous strides and challenging the leaders each night. They are certainly the future of the club.

Some Interesting information regarding the orientation of the GTYC flagpole: A mast should be installed as if it is the mast of a ship putting out to sea, i.e., heading toward an intended viewer. That is, the gaff should point aft. If you stand at the base of the pole looking forward (toward the intended viewer), the extremities of the yardarm are termed port (on your left) and starboard (on you right), just as they would be on a vessel. When the pole is associated with a particular building, the gaff (if any) should extend from the pole in the general direction of the building. Thus, if you stand in or next to the building looking at the pole, think of yourself as looking forward on a ship; the starboard side of the pole is on your right as you face the flagpole.

The gaff is considered to be the honored position. This is why the flag flies from this location and not from the top of the mast.
