GGiving…a lot of things have me thinking
about this very human and humane act
of giving of one’s self. This issue of the
magazine is going to press just prior to
the Thanksgiving holiday. Right after
that, we begin our preparations for the
Christmas season. I am looking forward
to Julefest, Grand
View’s annual
gift of music to
the community.
Carole and I

Christmas card we
will send to all our
friends. Indeed,
during Advent
we prepare our
hearts and minds
for the message of
Christmas, when
“God so loved the
world that he gave
his only Son, that
whosoever believes
in him will not
perish, but have eternal life.”
When I think about this fall term,
which is nearing its completion, I think
of numerous acts of giving on the part
of the Grand View community, several
of which are covered in this issue of the
magazine.
In early October, we hosted a group
of Danish students from the Vejla Business
School in Vejla, Denmark. They had been
scheduled to visit Dana College, but with
Dana’s closure, we substituted as hosts.
With relatively little advance notice, about
a dozen Grand View families opened
their homes to host these young visitors
from Denmark. The students, who were
used to staying on campus at Dana, were
skeptical at first about their homestays,
but everyone (including the host families)
had a great time. The Danish students
listed their homestays as the highlight of
their trip. And the teachers from Vejla
want to bring students back every year.
Some simple acts of giving hospitality
resulted in ongoing friendships with folks
in Denmark.
Just two weeks later, Grand View
hosted the Southeast Jutland Danish

individuals who give of themselves, who
make significant sacrifices to benefit
others…members of the military. Some
of our brave troops give their very lives
in service to our country. In honor of
their giving, Grand View proudly took the
necessary steps to become a “Military
Friendly School.” This is but a small
token of our thanks for what our military
personnel have given to all of us.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did
not mention those who have given
generously of their financial resources to
support Grand View over the past year.
This is the issue in which we list and
thank our donors for their gifts to us.
This is a season of giving…and giving
thanks. Acts of giving make the world
a better place. I am proud that Grand

that they will carry on these traditions of
volunteerism and philanthropy after they

Gymnastics Performance Team. Once
again, several families opened their
homes and gave of themselves to show
hospitality and friendship. One of the
guests said Grand View was the best
stop of all her tours with the gymnastics
teams.
Also in October, our campus
community participated in Des Moines’
signature event, the World Food Prize
Week. Our students and employees
donated food and money for an area
food pantry. We had a team of students
walk in the Hunger Hike.
You’ll read in this issue about
Woodrow Wilson Week. Again, our
Grand View community gave their time
and labor to package meals for Meals
from the Heartland and spruced up the
campus during a day of service. I also
could mention the Nursing Student
Association’s blood drive or our business
club’s efforts to raise funds for needy
children in Moldova. Without doubt, the
Grand View community is a very giving
community.

Grand View is pleased to announce
a 5% increase in full-time enrollment
this year, bringing the total number
of students to 2,103, a 3% overall
increase. This is yet another record year
for both full-time and total enrollment,
as well as the second largest freshmen
class in history. The university has
a 6.3% increase in traditional-age
students for this academic year.
Grand View is also an increasingly
residential campus with a record-
breaking number of students living on
campus. All campus housing facilities
are full, with 611 students living on
campus, an 8.5% increase from last
year. To accommodate the growing
demand, construction is underway on
a four-story residence building slated to
open in the fall of 2011.

As part of our developmental efforts to
reach prospective students outside Iowa
and the Midwest, Grand View has gone
virtual with CollegeWeekLive.
CollegeWeekLive hosts virtual
college fairs and open houses through
CollegeWeekLive.com, where students
from around the world can log in to
visit virtual booths, sit in on live video
presentations streamed real-time over
the web, and chat with admissions
representatives though instant messaging.
We hosted our first Grand View
virtual open house September 30, inviting
prospective students from as far away
as California and Texas through a series
of email campaigns. The open house
included five virtual booths, each with
a video highlighting an aspect of a
Grand View education and publications
available to download.
Throughout the evening we hosted
five live presentations: professor of
humanities Steve Snyder speaking
on academics; athletic director Troy
Plummer speaking on Viking athletics;
Diane Johnson, director of admissions,
presenting on admissions and financial
aid; Alex Piedras, director of multicultural
and community outreach, speaking
on campus life and diversity; and
Susie Stearns, director of the Career
Center, speaking about internships and
opportunities in Des Moines. Piedras and
Stearns were accompanied by students
and alumni.
The open house was actively
attended by more that 300 prospective
students, some of whom have followed
up with visits to our websites and further
inquiries.
We participated in the
CollegeWeekLive fall college fair
November 3 and 4, along with nearly 200
other colleges and universities. And in
early spring we’ll participate in a transfer
fair and, later, host our second virtual
open house.
Diane Johnson observes, “This is
a new way for students to sort of visit
campus from the comfort of home.
We hope it becomes an effective way
for us to reach out to young people
who might never hear of Grand View
otherwise. We have so much to offer,
especially to students in states with few
private colleges and state schools that are
overwhelmed.”
In general, recruiting is moving more
and more to electronic methods – email
campaigns, our own websites, Facebook,
YouTube, college search websites, and
virtual venues such as CollegeWeekLive.
Grand View has a significant presence in
all those areas. But there will never be a
substitute for being on campus for future
students to discover who we are, so many
of these efforts become the precursors to
personal campus visits, where face-to-face
trumps the virtual every time.

Assistant professor of english Dr. Josh
Call proudly admits he is a gaming
geek, always has been and probably
always will be. From a young age, Call
enjoyed playing games, whether on
the field, at the kitchen table, or on the
television. His grandfather taught him
poker probabilities and how to think
professionally about chess. His father,
too, taught him some tricks of the card
trade, as he is a very bright man with
numbers.
However, Call has taken the notion
beyond what typically comes to mind
when one thinks of gaming.
“Games tell stories; they craft
fictional stories around what is going
on in reality,” Call explained. “even if
the story is something the players make
up – like Monopoly. I used to play with
my parents and the story was how my
mom and I would team up to beat my
dad, otherwise we’d never win. It was a
family story.”

project in this area. The association is
designed to create an engaging and
open space for multidisciplinary work.
Call and his colleagues put together
the idea for a collection, which would
center on the idea of a genre-based
multidisciplinary approach to games.
Continuum Press offered them a
contract for a book series focusing on
game studies, officially titled Approaches
to Game Studies, with the first volume
titled Dungeons, Dragons and Digital
Denizens: The Digital Role-Playing Game.
As a professor, Call is trying to bring
his love of gaming into the classroom.
“Teaching works if it’s playful. Play
is an extremely social and significant
act for people, whether we’re talking
about family board game nights or social
games that children make up.”
He refers to the popular Calvin
and Hobbs comic and discusses a game
called Calvin Ball, which is a game Calvin
created where they make up the rules as
they go. The purpose is social identity
and how we learn rules. Call’s research
is tied to how we use play to teach
– how to make play a part of what it
means to learn in a classroom.
In his writing classes, Call uses
play as a means to discuss writing and
revision. Writing for most people means
strict rules and that it must be done a
certain way. He challenges his classes
to think and create a landscape of ideas
of how to play with language; then they
choose from those ideas to see what
works.

idea might play out, and how readers
might respond to it. It’s like playing a
game between you and your audience,
negotiating the terms and the rules,”
Call said.
His goal is to have a class where
the entire premise for the course is
one big game – and he is trying it out
this semester. He divided his technical
writing class into project teams, with
each team working for two campus
clients. Call explained that one way
to teach a class would be to provide
formats and have students master and
repeat the format. That seemed a little
dry to him as he is a firm believer that
you shouldn’t teach a class you wouldn’t
want to take. So, he turned the class
into a contest and weaved in his concept
of play. Students invite the clients
to class and solicit their work, create
questions to learn the parameters for
needed documents, create a timetable
and an outline of the project, including
who is doing what, how and when it
needs to be done.
“It’s like winding up a top and
letting it go!” Call said.
Thus far he has received a positive
student response to the notion of play
in the classroom. There was some
tension, because students are not used
to “playing” in classes such as his;
education doesn’t generally allow for
that kind of experience in an age of
standardized testing.
“As a professor, I have to be willing
to let go of some of the classroom
control in order for play to work, which
has been the most challenging – trying
to determine when to step in and when
to step back,” Call said. “Conducting a
class in this manner is actually harder for
students because it’s more work than if
I just gave them a form to follow. They
have to think and learn to juggle the
load and produce for the client. But I’ve
found that GV students are willing to try
things, and it’s been very rewarding.”

Military Friendly Schools, a college,
university or trade school must fall into
the top 15 percent of organizations
nationwide to serve military members as
students. Schools on the list range from
large state universities to private colleges
and community colleges to trade schools.
The common thread is their
shared priority
in recruiting
students
with military
experience.
G.I. Jobs,
an organization
dedicated
to post-military
success, scoured the nation’s
7,000 colleges, universities and trade
schools for those that offered top-notch
education, the best value, and were most
welcoming of military students. The
result was a list of approximately 1,000
schools, and Grand View was among
them.
Grand View offers accelerated
classes at our Johnston campus located
on-site at the Iowa National Guard
Camp Dodge and also provides a tuition
discount for evening and weekend
classes for active military personnel. The
university has friendly transfer policies
that accept military credit, including
the Organizational Studies major,
which incorporates military credit as
part of the program of study. Military
students also take advantage of academic
services such as adult learner services,
academic advising and the academic
enrichment center that provides tutoring,
math lab, writing
center, test-
taking and
learning skills,
as well as time
management
programs.
As a
participant in the
Yellow Ribbon
education enhancement
Program, designed to help students
finance up to 100 percent of their out-of-
pocket tuition and fees associated with
education programs that may exceed the
Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit, Grand
View proudly admits military students
and assists them with their educational
financial responsibilities. If a military
student is deployed for more than 30
days, he or she has the option to re-enroll
providing the student has not been
absent more than five years or been
discharged from the Armed Forces for
dishonorable conduct.
A soldier’s perspective.CPT Randall Stanford, 2006 Grand View
alumnus, husband, father and father-to-
be this spring, is currently mobilized as
part of the largest deployment in Iowa
history since WWII. Although this isn’t his
first deployment, this time around will be
harder leaving his 13-month-old daughter
and pregnant wife at home.
Stanford is from a small eastern Iowa
town, Quasqueton, where he attended
east Buchanan High School. He and
his family now reside in Clive. His wife,
Julie, is expecting twins in March, and
their daughter, Leighton, just turned one.
Stanford will miss the birth of his twins.
“Leighton is too young to realize
what is going on,” Stanford said. “I
call as often as I can and Skype when
possible. I got a life-size cardboard daddy
so she can see me every day. This being
my third deployment, Julie is getting used
to it, but this is my first after having a
child, so it’s much tougher on me than
previous deployments. I defend our
country, but I feel like my wife pays twice
the price; military spouses are strong
people.”
After two years of college, with less
than stellar grades, Stanford wasn’t sure
what he wanted to do professionally, so
he joined the Army in 1998. He spent
two years in Germany and was deployed

to Kosovo in 1999; at that time he was
a sniper. He spent the next two years
in Fort Hood, Texas, and after his four-
year commitment was up he decided he
wanted to finish school. His high school
sweetheart, now his wife, lived in
Des Moines; so he left active duty,
moved to Des Moines and joined the
National Guard in order to attend college.
Stanford’s military position is S3
(Operations) Plans. He does a variety
of things but as his title states, he
plans. With more than 400 soldiers
in his squadron, he plans training and
operations, as well as movements such as
flights and bus rides.
After being mobilized in August,
Stanford and his squadron were sent to
the National Training Center in California,
which provided them with the most
realistic training they could receive. The
Center is in a desert with mountains, a
good representation of what they would
encounter overseas.
Stanford said
mentally he is in
good shape and
prepared for his
mission. He worries
more about the
younger soldiers.
As a Ranger, he has
the training and
experience needed for situations that may
await him. After his first deployment to
Kosovo, he was sent there again in 2003
and noted the difference a few years
had made. The countryside is similar to
Iowa farm ground, but the people live in
poverty. Regardless, they invite soldiers
into their homes for tea and share any
food they have.
“They really appreciated that we were
there,” Stanford said. “I could really tell a
difference in the economy and the people
in just a four-year time span.”
Stanford went to Iraq in 2007 and
spent much of his time in Baghdad. He
said most people were glad the Americans
were there as things had improved
tremendously since 2005 when the heavy
fighting broke out.
“I know what soldiers did there made
a difference for those people. Being that
far from home in places like that makes
you appreciate what you have in the U.S.”
Reflecting on his education at Grand
View, Stanford said GV helped improve
his ability to multitask. Working while
attending school and being a member of
the National Guard, he had to learn to
prioritize his time. He likens the Army to
a business; he must be able to manage
money and people effectively in order to
accomplish his mission.
“Thinking back on my first class at
GV with Patricia Rinke – she was a tough
teacher, very smart, the kind of teacher
you don’t like because you really have
to work, but the kind of teacher you like
because you know you’re getting a lot
from that class,” Stanford said.
Participating in group projects and
learning to work with people who have
different abilities has proven very useful in
his military career. Deciphering what each
soldier is good at and how that person can
best help the team enables Stanford to do
his job efficiently.
Stanford chose GV for our great
reputation and relationship with the
National Guard. The night and weekend
classes were convenient and affordable,
and he had a great experience as a
student. He adds that the staff and faculty
always understood if military training or
others duties came up and welcomed
him back to class when the mission was
complete.

An Army wife perspective. Captain Stanford’s wife, Julie, faces
nine months of raising a child on her own,
giving birth to twins, and anticipating the
return of her husband. Although this is
not her first experience with deployment, it
is her first after having their daughter.
“With his previous deployments it
was just me and those times allowed me
to focus on my career goals,” Julie said.
“This time around is completely different
due to the addition of our daughter. Life
is demanding caring for her by myself, so
work has taken a backseat to my role as a
mother.”
It is easier now to mentally prepare
for her husband’s deployment since she’s
done it several times. She takes it one day
at a time and works to maintain a positive
attitude. Staying busy to avoid stray
thoughts is not so hard with a 13-month
old to chase, but Julie does worry about
her husband’s safety given the state of
affairs in Afghanistan and what she sees
on the news. However, she is comforted
knowing he has the proper training for the
situation, which helps put her at ease.
Julie does her best to reassure
Stanford that she and their family are fine
and everything is under control. Her main
worry is his safety as she doesn’t want him
distracted worrying about things at home.
“I try not to dwell on my worries as
that is not going to help get me through
this. I know Randy would be here if he
could be and that everything will have a
way of working out,“
Julie said. “We tell
him how much we
love him and miss
him and can’t wait
for him to come
home.”
Julie said her
husband is a great
leader to his soldiers
and takes his role as
Captain very seriously,
and has earned great
respect by doing so.
His military service
has a strong influence in his family life but
through his role as a father and husband,
he is learning patience, which helps him be
a better soldier. Most people perceive her
husband as tough ‘Mr. Army’ but in reality
he puts others ahead of himself, trying to
help out even when on the other side of
the world.
A current student-soldier perspective. Current student Heidi Breitsprecker ’11
has several roles to juggle in her life. Not
only is she an adult student at GV, she
is also a wife, a mother of three, and a
soldier. She has been a member of the Air
National Guard for almost 24 years and is
the Base Knowledge Operations Manager
for the 132nd Fighter Wing in Des Moines.
Breitsprecker decided GV was the
best fit for her because of the night
and weekend accelerated classes, and
numerous co-workers recommended she
look into the program.
“My advisor, Kelly [Friesleben],
has been very easy to work with and
quite knowledgeable about how to get
everything I needed ready for my classes,”
Breitsprecker said. “I like the night
and Saturday classes and I’ve not been
disappointed yet.”
Managing being a mom, a wife, a
soldier and a student has been challenging.
Breitsprecker travels often with the military,
sometimes in the middle of a term, but
her instructors have been understanding
and work with her military commitments.
Several professors allow her to turn in
assignments early and make up tests.
Breitsprecker has been deployed twice
since being a student at Grand View,
and both times she was able to pick up
with her classes as soon as she returned.
During her last deployment, she had a final
paper due before she returned, but she
was able to communicate via email with
her instructor, who helped her finish the
project.

He is currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq, as the resource management sergeant

ending the U.S. forces combat mission in the region. Operation New Dawn
commenced September 1, which opened the door for a shift from combat to
stability operations. As the transition takes place, U.S. forces will continue to train,
advise and assist the Iraqi security forces.

With her first priority being her family,
leaving them for her military responsibilities
is difficult. Breitsprecker is lucky in the
fact that her husband is very supportive,
as he too is full-time military – also a GV
student – and knows the anxiety she feels
when preparing for deployment. The first
time the couple was activated, it was to
different locations but at the same time.
“It took a lot of planning and a lot of
trust…trust in your family who will care
for your kids when you are both gone,”
Breitsprecker said. “However, I’m glad we
deployed when the children were young
enough to think it was cool but not so old
that we missed any major milestones. It’s
hard to leave them, but you’ve got a job to
do and you do it.”
Breitsprecker spent one four-
month deployment in the United Arab
emirates and a second four-month stint
in Kyrgyzstan. She said she would deploy
again if duty calls. She understands that
what U.S. soldiers are doing overseas is
for the better and will change lives in the
future. Breitsprecker’s ten-year old son
hopes to follow in his parents’ footsteps
but waivers about either being a soldier
like his dad or a Navy Seal.
“I hope all my children grow up and
join the military,” Breitsprecker said. “Not
only is it one way to serve your country but
the benefits are phenomenal.”

Continuing her education was
a matter of having a well-rounded
educational experience after she retires
from the military. Although she has
been the benefactor of many military
advantages, she felt it important to balance
it out.
“The military has given me numerous
opportunities that most civilian jobs
can’t equal; I just felt it was important to
balance that with a civilian degree, which is
probably the first thing a civilian employer
will look for.”
Breitsprecker credits GV and the
accelerated classes as the sole reason she
is currently in school. Waiting until she is
retired from the military to attend college
wasn’t an option. She has been able
to finish her Air Force degree and work
toward a civilian degree simultaneously,
which has made many of her goals
attainable.
supporting the pursuit of educAtion. Most prospective military students are
concerned about cost and the ability to use
their education benefits. Kelly Friesleben,
director for the College for Professional
Adult Learning (CPAL) at the Johnston
campus, said in the CPAL program she
discusses the military discount and how
military benefits apply toward tuition. She
makes connections between the student
and Grand View person who will be
working with them to receive their benefits.
“Military students want to know
how their credits will transfer and what
the best degree program is for them,”
Friesleben said. “I fill them in about our
Organizational Studies program as an
option that will help them maximize their
military transfer credit.”
Currently, Grand View has 90 military
veterans or dependents of military
veterans enrolled this fall. In addition,
approximately eight Grand View students
are currently deployed. Friesleben said she
has noticed an increase in military students
in the CPAL program in the last two and
a half years since she has been director at
the Johnston campus.
“We have specific policies in place
for military members to withdraw due
to deployment and returning post-
deployment,” Friesleben said. “Our goal
is to help remove barriers for students
who wish to re-enroll after returning from
deployment.”
Grand View recently announced a
new military spouse benefit. Under this
new program, spouses who wish to enroll
in the CPAL program are eligible to receive
the same tuition discount active military
members receive.
According to Grand View’s mission,
the university seeks to engage, equip, and
empower students to fulfill their individual
potential and serve society. Grand View
is committed to the development of the
whole person – mind, body and spirit –
and to preparing students for successful
careers and responsible citizenship both
in their communities and in a diverse and
changing world.
We strive to provide that unique
GV experience that alumni are so proud
of to all students, military and civilians.
Working to make the admissions process
easy and creating a campus community
full of support puts students at ease and
able to enjoy their time with their Grand
View family. As graduates embark on their
lives outside GV, whether in an office, in a
hospital, or serving our country, we hope
they look back on GV with fondness and
pride…as we look upon them with the
same endearment.

Grand View invited its first Woodrow Wilson
Visiting Fellow, Maria Karagianis, to campus October
18-22.
Karagianis, an award-winning writer, journalist
and social entrepreneur, worked for the Boston
Globe for 13 years as part of a team covering school
desegregation, for which the newspaper won a
Pulitzer Prize. She also traveled to South Africa
during apartheid and reported for Rand Daily Mail.
Afterward she attended Harvard Divinity School
and earned a master’s degree in world religions.
Karagianis is the founding executive director of
Discovering Justice, a non-profit civil educational
organization recognized nationally for its mission of
educating for democracy by teaching about justice.
She is currently writing a book about values and how
to create a meaningful life, and is the director of US
Operations for Anatolia, a school started by Boston
educators and missionaries in the Ottoman empire
in the 19th Century and is now among the finest
private educational institutions in Greece.
While on campus, Karagianis met and spoke
with classes, presented at a faculty colloquium on
her research, and addressed students on the topics
of character and leadership. During chapel service
October 19, she spoke on discovering justice and
ecology. An all-campus address was presented
the following day where Karagianis discussed her
life, her successes, what she has come to learn
throughout her life experiences on how to create a
meaningful life. The campus community was invited
to a picnic over the noon hour, and in the afternoon
volunteers participated in service projects.
Nearly 250 volunteers packaged 40,662 meals
for Meals From the Heartland, far surpassing the
original goal of 25,000. Many of those meals stayed
in the Des Moines area, and some were shipped
to New Mexico. Over 165 volunteers worked on
campus beautification projects, picking up trash,
weeding garden beds and around buildings, and
spreading nearly two semi-loads of mulch.
Fellowship Week was a huge success in many
ways. The visiting speaker posed several thought-
provoking ideas and left many thinking about their
own paths and how they live a meaningful life. But
probably the most important aspect to come out
of the week was the sense of campus community,
camaraderie and pride. Students, faculty and staff
worked side-by-side filling food boxes, cleaning up
the campus grounds and listening to Karagianis
speak about leading a meaningful life. The week
sought to embody and exemplify the Viking eDGe
(engaging in community, discerning life purpose,
growing in leadership, educating with integrity) by
raising vital life questions and engaging in communal
experiences. The week ended with a resounding
boost in Grand View pride and campus fellowship.
or more than 35 years, the Woodrow Wilson
Visiting Fellows program has brought prominent
artists, diplomats, journalists, business leaders,
and other nonacademic professionals to
campuses across the United States for weeklong
residencies of teaching and dialogue with
students and faculty members.

Grand View welcomed several Danish visitors to campus
in October.
Twenty-six students and two faculty members from
the Vejle Business College in Denmark were on campus
September 30 through October 6. The purpose of their
trip was to learn about other cultures and school systems.
During their visit they stayed with faculty and staff host
families who helped introduce them to American culture.
While on campus, the students attended classes,
including history, communication, psychology and art
courses. They experienced campus dining in the Knudsen
Dining Hall and toured local businesses, such as the
Meredith test garden, Principal Financial and the Pappajohn
Sculpture Garden. As GV guests, they attended a football
game and went to open mic night in Bud’s Place.
A reception was held in the Danish students’ honor and
afterward they spoke about Denmark, commenting on its
population, economy and cultural differences, among other
topics.

Homecoming festivities began Friday, September 24, with
the Alumni College, featuring Joy Ibsen ’60, writer, editor,
musician, and piano teacher. The session celebrated the legacy
of the Happy Danes through story and song. The principles of
N.F.S. Grundtvig were interspersed and illustrated by the singing
of familiar songs of the Happy Danes. Assistant Professor of
Communication Mark Siebert presented the second alumni
college session focusing on the changes in newspapers and other

Saturday started out with the annual Viking 5K with
approximately 236 runners/walkers participating in the race,
followed by the Kid Trot. The alumni women’s soccer game
took place later that morning, and campus visitors were also
invited to peruse Dennis Kaven’s Retrospect art exhibit. Although
the day was a bit soggy with the rain, the leisure garden had
several activities including the Viking Ride car show, Aebleskive
experience, face painting and Kids Radio Mania, and the student
float contest. Alumni and guests were treated to a homecoming
picnic lunch and then cheered on the Vikings football team as
they defeated Waldorf College in a 70-0 victory.
The Varsity women’s soccer team collected a double-

Living in the United States is a luxury
many of us don’t think of as such. With
elections recently past, we are reminded
of what it means to be a United States
citizen, and we relish in the fact that
we got to play a part in our futures by
choosing our leaders. We don’t always
pay attention to the living conditions,
governments or school systems in other
parts of world as we get wrapped up
in our own busy lives. But for sisters
Khek ’98 and Kong ’98 Chanhsyma,
living in the U.S. has meant a better life.
Originally from Vientiane, Laos, the
sisters and their parents, sponsored by
relatives in the U.S., left the only home
they knew to better themselves.
“Our parents wanted us to have
opportunities that were not available
in our country,” Khek explained. “Our
cousin’s family sponsored us.“
To further their education, Khek
and Kong chose Grand View. It was
close to their new home, and the smaller
campus community made them feel
more comfortable than some of the large
universities.
The family arrived in the U.S. in
1983 and recently decided it was time
to make it official. They had put off
obtaining their citizenship mainly due to
the extensive ten-page application form
they had to fill out and the fee. After the
form was completed, there was a one-
month waiting period. Then they were
interviewed, waited another three weeks,
and took a three-part civics test. Upon
passing they participated in a swearing-in
ceremony at Camp Dodge.
“The most challenging part was
learning to assimilate by learning english
and, of course, paying taxes,” Kong said.
“The most rewarding part about being
a citizen now is that we have freedom…
freedom of religion, freedom of speech,
freedom to travel.”
Khek agrees and enjoys her right
to travel freely. She also adds that she’s
happy to have the right to vote, and
being a citizen has made renewing her
driver’s license easier.
“I felt the most challenging part was
learning to read and write english,” Khek
said. “Knowing we now have
the freedom to do so many
things is a great feeling.”
Since graduating from
Grand View, both of them
with degrees in business
administration and minors
in marketing, Kong
works at Wells
Fargo Home
Mortgage
and Khek is
employed at
Wells Fargo
Bank. The
sisters
both enjoy
volunteering
and do so
often. When
they emigrated
to the U.S.,
they needed
help learning the
language, the
culture and finding
their place in it.
Paying it forward,
they find it rewarding
to help others and
not expect anything in
return.

thank you. Over the past decade, there have been countless reasons for me to thank you and the other donors listed on
these pages. The most tangible reason is the transformation of the campus landscape made possible with private support. It’s a long list
that includes the Johnson Wellness Center, the Luhrs Athletic Fields, elings Hall, Jensen Hall and the Rasmussen Center – over $15 million
in building and improvements.
Some of your support has been more intangible. Gifts to the annual fund and the endowment have helped keep the cost of tuition
affordable and provide support for programs, as well as fund thousands of dollars in scholarships for deserving students.
While Grand View has made significant progress in many areas, we are challenged and energized at what lies ahead. Construction
continues on additional housing that will enable 230 more students to live on campus. Plans are taking shape to improve and expand
our Student Center and beautify campus with a pedestrian mall. Thank you once again for your confidence and support in what has
been accomplished. I look forward to working with you to advance Grand View to an even higher level.

KeelIA PAulSen ’07 graduated from Grand View with a degree
in graphic design. Taking painting
classes with art and design professor
Dennis Kaven, piqued Paulsen’s
interest in painting. While attending
Grand View she worked for Sticks
and was mentored by another
GV graduate, Ariel Minervini ’08,
who taught her more about the art.
Currently, Paulsen is a graphic designer
in Des Moines and does freelance design
and commissioned
paintings.
She and
her two-
year old
daughter,
Henrietta, reside
in downtown
Des Moines.
Paulsen started her shoe painting
business, Khenri, named for her daughter, as a practicality.
Instead of shoe shopping, she painted her old heels and created
“new” shoes. She said she prefers to wear black with minimal
accessories and wants her shoes to be the piece that stands out.
The premise of her company is made-to-order, custom-designed
shoes. All the shoes
are one-of-a-kinds
and can be recreated
but will never be
done exactly the same.
Paulsen’s clients usually give
her a color palette, and she
creates a design to suit their needs;
many also provide her with their old
heels.
The company has evolved
to combine a
mixture of
painting and
adornments.
She uses a metal
worker and a cobbler to
accomplish some of the more
outstanding pieces and has branched
out into handbags, t-shirts, vintage jewelry
and vintage menswear.
