Thank you for doing this blog. Here is a very brief tutorial. Let m e kno w if you have any questions.

**You will receive (or hav e rece ived) an invitation to join the grandma in iraq blog. Follow the directions given, which includes setting up a fre e blogg er account.

** In Blogger, here is how you post:

-- Buttons can change font to bold, italic or different color.

-- To insert a link, just highligh t the text you want to be linked then click o n that green -looking button (to the rightof the T). All links mus t have http:// in them, so that comes up as a d efault (so on e thing you have to ma ke sure isyou don't have http:// in there twice when you put your link in).

-- To add a ph oto click on the "square" button (second from the end). Brow se the photo from your h ard drive orwherever you have it. One thing w ith our blogs: Our photos can only b e 320 px wide... if it's bigger, it will b low o utthe right rail. We can e xperim ent he re and see what happens when you p ost.

Thanks again, and p lease don't h esitate to e-mail me with questions.

    Thanks,

Please reply with answers as soon as you can. You can keep your answers brief -know there are a lot of them. If you can't reply because you're on the road, I understand. RE: story Page 2 of 5

    1) What have you been doing in Iraq since you've been there? (primary responsibilities)

My job is to communicate what we are doing in the country, so I have interpret engineering language and put it intopeople words, I also visit lots of construction sites so I can understand what is going on and what it means to differentaudiences, such as thre Iraqi pepople and the US public. I also get involved in escorting media and VIPs to project sites andand assist in explaining what we are accomplishing. We have awarded approximately 1200 projects, 800 have beencompleted and we have another 50 that are expected to be awarded. That accounts for around $2 Billion worth ofconstruction to jump start the Iraq econmy, schools, medical care, transportation, security, water and sewer systems. There is

so much that needs to be done, we are working with the Iraqi people to determine the priorities they want accomplished andhopefully providing them with the tools and training so they can continue the momentum.

    2) Where are you stationed?

My home in Iraq is at Base Camp Adder, near Nasiriyah, formerly called Tallil Air Base. My area of operation involvesthe southern nine provinces of Iraq, from just south of Baghdad to the Kuwait border and from Iran to Saudria Arabia. I'vebeen to eight of the provinces so far.

    3) What have you seen there that has surprised you?

Everything surprises me because I tend to have an adventuresome spirit so I like looking into the who what where why

when and how's . I ask a lot of questions.

    4) How have the civilians treated you?

Very well. I smile and I get smiles. From schools to hospitals to construction sites with workers or police men, Armymen, women on the street, and especially children, I get smiles. Today 1 was at an Iraqi Army Headquarters touring with anIraqi general and a polish general and the Iraqi officers kept telling me - ladies first everytime we would reach the door at thesame time. The women are very curious because I wear a uniform and they don't dress in pants or uniforms.

5 ) How safe have you been over there (any times where you haven't felt safe)?

I feel safe, at least I don't worry about it all the time because you just can't worry all the time. I think safe is relevant--

know the parameters. I am safest when I am at my home base, although we've had some rocket attacks. When I travel Iknow I am most vulnerable. We do have expert trained security escort teams that know what they are doing and are veryprotective. When I am out at a project site and I step back to take a picture, I step on their toes so I know they are coveringmy back so to speak. When our vehicle has a flat tire, the teams jump out to fix that flat, you don't really know if that tire wasblown or shot out. I can't leave the car, our guards are serious and they post sentries while a couple change the tire and theyare very fast, 5 minutes and we are back rolling again - but when they get worried, I know I should be worried too.

The presence of so many weapons makes me most uneasy. Everyone here has weapons, except me and my civiliancounterparts. They tell me that will protect me because I am a noncombatant, but terrorist want random violence and theyreally don't care whether you are a woman, child or noncombatant. I grew up with hunting pheasants, ducks and rabbits inSouth Dakota so I am used to being around guns, but everybody here has guns. All the soldiers in the mess hall, all the escortvehicles on the highways have machine guns, everybody's security team, Iraqi soldiers, Polish soldiers, and the list goes on.You just can't let it spook you, but sometimes it does.

6 ) What is a day like for you (when do you wake uplgo to sleeplwhere do you go)?

I usually get up around 6 a.m and walk to my office which is next to our living quarters, meet friends and we walk tothe DFAC Dining FAcility or mess hall for breakfast with hundreds of soldiers. They have everything you could ever wantfor breakfast. I am back at my office by 7:30 and we have a staff meeting at 8. The rest of my day in the office is usually

RE: story Page 3 of 5

checking email and coordinating with the people in the office, lunch, meet friends again, dinner at 6ish and then I got back towork until about 8. At which time I usually take a walk or go an exercise for a short whle. I go to bed around ten. If amout in the field, I am controlled by when the PST team leaves, that is the Personal Security Team. So if they are leaving at 6or 8 or whatever our schedule dictates, my whole day is circled around that schedule. You hopehlly grab meals, but lunchisn't always guaranteed so I usually try to eat breakfast and supper is pretty sure right now because it gets dark earlier andthey don't like to drive after dark, too many chances of problems, mistaken identity and even getting fired on by your ownpeople. When I am on the road my schedule is dictated by the projects we are going to visit and when the team can get usthere, they don't always take the direct route because that is predictable and they are always conducting intelligence and

looking at where incidents are happening and then we avoid those locations. When I travel with them, there are rules, we areunder their care and we don't leave the car, we don't open our own doors and we don't stay from the group. If I want to take apicture and I need a perspective away from the group, I get a guard, ask him if I can go this direction and he radios it in andthen we go where I want to go. They won't let me stand next to open windows for long or on roof tops because we are toovulnerable. My time is about half in the office and half on the road. When I am on the road it is exhausting and then I go inand check email and try to keep communications going. I am planning the big media events right now and I can't afford foremails to go unanswered.

    7) How hard is i t being away from your family?

It is very tough, but my family are real troopers and have agreed to let me have this time to do something I feel is veryimportant. My family knows how important they are to me, nothing is more important than my husband, children and theirfamilies. I'm being asked to extend now past the six months and I'll have to assess whether my family can deal with thatsituation. Part of me wants to stay and part of me wants to go home.

    8) Will you celebrate Christmas in any way? I'll spend the day with my friend here, we are going to go Christmascaroling on Christmas Eve and we have a gift exchange all planned, a horse shoe game, and other festitivies. I'll go toMidnight Mass with about six friends and then Christmas Day we'll have more fun things. I try not to thlnk about it a lotbecaue I don't want to become overwhelmed by this.

9 ) How hard will it be not being here for Christmas?I try not to thlnk about it a lot becaue I don't want to becomeoverwhelmed by this. I think it is harder for my family, especially my husband, we haven't been apart for Christmas since wemet -- I forget how many years ago. I do a lot of baking for Christmas, I make coffee cakes for the neighborhood, I meandozens of them and I am the pie lady too. So it will be tough for me not to do those traditional things, but my children allcarry on many of the traditions that I learned from my German Mom and from my Dad's Mom, my LuxembourgGrandmother. And I started coolung and baking French Candian food so my husband could enjoy his family traditions.

I really miss the hugs, the hubby hugs, the kid hugs and the grandchildren hugs. You just can't go up to strangers andsay, I really need a hug! But I do with the friends here and I'm sure over the holidays we will be needing hugs.

    10) How often do you talk to your husband/family? My husband about every 3 nights unless I am on the road. I can'ttell him where I am going because of security, but I always tell him not to wony and I try to email when I am out on the roadso he knows I am okay, so they all know I am okay.

We email all the time, it is such a joy to feel you are still part of the fun and goings on by hearing the cute little storiesabout the grandkids or the frustrations of one of the kids and sharing of recipes. Ever so often I get one of those, Mom, howdo you make this or what should I do about that. I love it

    11) When do you come home? Scheduled for the end of Feb

    12) What is the weather like?

Been in the 80's in the daytime, a little cooler at night, 50-60's very sunny here.

    13) Where do you sleep?

We have trailers, there are ten rooms in my trailer and I have what is called a wet trailer, which means I have my ownshower, bathroom. Many of the trailers are rooms and then you have to walk to a trailer that has bathrooms and showers likethe place I am staying tonight. Still others live in tents, so we are very fortunate. A lot of soldiers aren't as fortunate.

    14) There's been a lot of negativity here lately about the war. Tell us about the war from your perspective?

RE: story Page 4 of 5

I guess I donl[t see the war as much as I see the reconstruction. Because my role is to communicate the building not thedestruction. I see some of the years of neglect put upon these people and wonder how they survived. They were denied morethan fieedom, access to information, computers, cell phones, maps and news media. all the ways that people get information, they were denied.1 Then they were denied health care, school, transportation, sewers, clean waters, electricity and the listgoes on. What I see now is new hope in Iraqi people, especially in the South, this is Shia country and Saddams regime wasSunni so he held them down and denied them everything. So much has been done already and yet there is so much yet to do.We are turning more over to Iraqi people all the time and teaching them how democracy works. This is their country we are

here to help, not rule. Now I see news media asking questions of leaders, I see the TV, satellite dishes cell phones, and all theconveniences they never had. We don't have electricity up to meet the demand yet and we aren't happy about that but part ofthe reason is becaue the use of power has more than doubled, people have incomes and they are buying consumable products, appliances and they are starting to live quality lives. Those are all such positive signs of freedom.

I see the soldiers every day, they are smiling, we chat, they are upbeat, joking. These young people are in more dangerthan I iam, they on out on patrol every day they protect our perimeter, escort convoys, fly missions. I adrmre them all. Theyare doing a great job and have left familes and friends behind. Our area is relatively calm, but there are many areas where wecan't travel because it is too dangersou. So we are always vigilant, an Alarm rings and we take it seriously.

I see so much progress, like the Iraqi Army today, they are so thrilled to have their new quarters and are taking the leadin so many parts of the country. Many of the Coaltion forces are secondary to Iraqi security now. I see many Iraqipolicemen and they are so grateful for new quarters that we have built, professional police stations, highway patrols, borderstations. The professional stations, clean and sanitary are for professional policemen that need the confidence of the Iraqi

people to perform their tough jobs of apprehending and holding criminals and insurgents.

    15) Are you 6 1 now? When was your birthday? Birthday was in November, yes, I am 61 now or 16??? I was going tokeep it a secret, but my commander had the same day for his birthday so we both had big cakes and a party. I keep saying theCincinnati Enquirer had one wrong fact in the story about me - it is my age! :)

    16) What has been the best part of your job since you've been there?

Meeting the Iraqi people and hearing what they have to say about their new found freedoms. I hear how grateful theyare for being able to vote, I hear women talk about their opportunities and I hear them talk about not having opportunities, butthey have freedom to express frustrations and limitations. I especially love the children, they are so full of smiles regardlessof their situation which sometimes seem bleak to us, but children always see the bright side of everything.

Some of our Iraqi engineers now recognize me so when I get to the project sites they come up to greet Miss Suzanne andthank me for the pictures that I emailed to them or we chat about their family. I think the biggest thing is that we all respectthem and the work they are doing for us in Iraq. They are very courageous and many have been threatened for working forthe Americans. (The same is true of our contractors, some have been killed and kidnapped as insurgents tried to intimidatethem.)

Our Iraqi civil engineers are hired to work for us to be our eyes and ears at the construction sites and they do qualityassurance for us so they are very important to reconstruction of their own country and you can see the pride in their eyes. Ialso see it in the construction workers when I smile and they pose for pictures. I always nod at people and I always get anods and greetings back. I thlnk it is what we all want from others and that is respect.

    17) What do you like the least?

Wearing the IBA, Individual Body Armor, it is heavy and uncomfortable, but it is required and it protects a person, soyou wear it. It doesn't do much for a bad hair day when you wear the kevlar (helmet) and it makes a good hair day into a badone.

    18) Are you glad you went?

Absolutely the greatest experience of a lifetime. I almost feel guilty that my family has to w o w so much becaue the

    1) Why did you decid e to stay past February, when yo u w ere originally supposed to comehome? Originally, I was scheduled to return home Fe b23. I knew almost right away thatI wanted to stay longer so I started mentioning it as early as October. My husband's firstreaction was absolutely not. As time went on and he heard w hat I was doing heunderstood wh y I wanted to stay on. My replacem ent isn't here yet and I feel it isimportant to hav e s om e overlap time with him. I talked to m y fam ily, my supervisor indowntown C incinnati at theUS Army Corps of Engineer's Great Lakes and Ohio RiverDivision and my boss here, I decided to serve another two months in Iraq.

I feel that I am ma king a difference here. To me, theUS goa l to help the Iraqi people isethically and m ora lly right and historically significant. I feel, Iam a part of something

bigger than myself. Thanks to all family, friends, superviso rs and co-workers who arepicking up m y w ork at home so I can be here. The people who are supporting me arepartof my efforts as well and I thank them for your suppo rt, contributions and prayers.

    2) What was y our fam ily's reaction? I think it was especially h ard on my husband, not atthe time he agreed but after the time passed when I should have been home. The last twoweeks he has started to question why he agreed. The kids w ere too thrilled at first, butthey understand. But if I'm not home for Easter --I'll be in trouble! So with Lent juststarting I guess you could sayI'm getting the opportunity fo r my40 days in the desert.

    3) H as an ything changed in the way o f your daily routine or security since the last timeIinterviewed you by email?

If it is poss ible, things have gotten busier. Iam feeling like I should be in at least threeplaces at on e time and it is more and more difficult to keep up with the commu nicationdem ands . W e have nine southern provinces and at any one time we are having ribboncuttings o r media events that I should attend. W e've also had some high profile even tsthat take m ore energy.

I've also started doing a lot of outreach activities to support schools and orphanages and thais very rew arding and at the same time it is sad to see the conditions here, how terrible itmust have b een for people to live under theSaddam regime and how little was do ne duringthose years for schools and healthcare. It makes a person so thankful for the life we hav e iour country.

    4) W e're still seeing most of the negative news on a daily basis- uch as civilians andsoldiers killed. Tell us briefly what you see compared to what we may be seeing. Sin c

I've been herewe've had any number of historic events that all influence the securitysituation. Several major national elections when the country has shut down borde rs andrestricted movement between provinces in order to control violence. Then we'v e hadRamadan and religious holidays that tend to cause changes in security. The re have alsobeen demonstrations, but they aren't necessarily against Americans asI hear reported inUS new s. Sometimes they are demonstrating because they want jobs and I guess whatyou are seeing is the emergence of democracy where people can express themselveswitho ut being shot or imprisoned.

I haven 't see n a lot of noticeable difference where I live, but I felt security wa s just startingto ge t a little better and then unfortunately the bombing of the shrine occurred.I had m yfirst media filming cancelled for security concerns this week. I had BB C7sPanorama, aweekly new s program similar to Sixty Minutes, planning to film at Khor A z Zub ayrPowe r Plant in Basrah Province. But the British forces felt security was comp rom ised.If I lived i n Baghdad or near the shrine that was bom bed, I m ight see more problems.

It makes a difference on where I can and can't travel. Som e areas are restricted and I 'vespend a cou ple more times in the bunkers wh en alarms have gone off and rockets havebeen fired at us. Occasionally, we have alerts that mean we are required to wear ourbattle armor around the camp-perhaps a few mo re times lately.

5 ) Tha t schoo l that was called Saddam Hussein School- does it have a name today?Malk A1 Ashtar S chool, previously Saddam Hussein School, changed in 2003 to M alk A1Ashtar, on e Im am A li's deputies, the first Imam of S hi7 a slam, he was a military leader fo rAli.

According to M r. Aw ad, Vice Principal, no work had been done at the school since 1981, it wa sin a very deteriorated condition. So bad that the US C orps of Engineer representatives felt theschool should b e condem ned rather than fixed. The comm unity wanted their school, this is avery depressed area and the school is an important center of the comm unity. They are extrem elgrateful for US renovation and efforts at their school. School renovations are primarily built bysmall Iraqi contracto rs hiring local workers who lived in the community. This builds com mu nipride and ownersh ip in the school, provides construction training to local workers and investslocal dollars into the com munity. R enovating this school costs$103k That amount of moneyrenovated28 classroom s with new terrazzo tile floor, repaired m ortar, applied new plaster and

painted walls. Furnished each classroom with new electric wiring, lights and ceiling fans and conditioning in administrative rooms. Installed new door frames with new d oor s; and windowfram es with new windows and window screens. Renovated all the school's bathrooms, includne w plumbing fixtures, drainage pipes and wall tiles. Finally they turned a mud hole that wasw asn 't good as a playground into a courtyard with large decorative stonework. That is moneywell spent inmy book. This schools has around 1600 children, half go in the m orning and halfin the afternoon. The desks are in pretty bad shape and we are collecting funds to replace somand a friend of mine got money from friends to buy the school blackboards. All these thingsseem comm on place to us, but they don't have them in Iraqi schools.

    6) Any stats on what the Army C orp is doing- how many projects are go ing on now,how many completed, etc.

Th e Corps has renovated or built 825 schools in Iraq, 13 hospitals, 14 public health clinics,51 public buildings, 184 water treatment facilities31 waste water treatment facilities, 87village roads, 92 railroad stations, 23 post offices, 19 power generation facilities, 12 powertransmission and 103 power distribution facilities, 198 border forts, 299 p olice stations, 63fire stations and 63 military bases. I won't go on and name everything, but I think you cansee why I am so busy. All together we have com pleted 2105 projects, 645 a re ongoing andanother 437 are planned. There is still a lot to be done because you can't rebuild a countryin a couple years that has been neglected in every possible way fo r more than 3 0 years. Ididn't even mention the oil projects and when I saw those I couldn't be lieve ho w reallyadvanced and sophisticated Iraq was in the 1960's and how far they fell durin g the pastregime.

    7) Tell me what you're doing today.Working fact sheets for oil program. I visited threefacilities that are part of the oil process to produce liquefied petroleum gas (LP G) lastweek when I escorted a reporter. So now I need to provide more interpre tation to whatengineers told me and put it into real terms and what it means to Iraq. Afte r the GulfWar 11, five pressurized concrete tanks w ere opened to the atmosphere causing anestimated 10-year supply of (LPG ), propane and butane to boil off or escape to the air.

This resulted in a shortage of LPG supply to meet the demand required to cook and heatIraqi homes. Since that time, Iraq has been importing LPG to mee t dem and .It is a long reach from eng ineering terminology to explain what that means to the Iraqi publand to the western audiences. Oil just isn't as easy to explain as schools, hosp itals, roads, police stations and border forts. I have to do research to understand how oil is extracted andwhat happened here beforeI came and represented this program so I can understand whathas been accomplished and wh at we are attempting to do in this very visible area.

NY Times reporter is asking ques tion on ABO T so I started a fact sheet was o n the A1 BasraOil Terminal for offshore oil-loading- we are doing improvem ents there to help oil-loadingwhen Iraq meets it's goal of producing three million barrels of oil per day. Efficien tmetering provides reliability of measurem ent, accountability of revenue and predictability oincome for Iraq's most valuable resource. ABOT is essential to Iraq's reco nstruction becauoil exports generate revenues of approxim ately $130 million per day. AB OT isapproximately twenty miles off the shore of Iraq in the Persian Gulf. I would haveresponded sooner, but I wa s working to get some answers for reporter's ques tions. I wouldsu re like to visit there.

Sorry to be delayed on this, I'm trying to organize distribution of the school supplies andthey just had me move m y office so I didn't have a computer so I have good excusesO.Anyw ay, I've just got so much yet to accomplish and my time is runn ing out fast. Sorry I

All links must ha ve htt p:ll in them, so that comes up as a de fault (so one thing you h ave to make sure isyou don't have http:// in there twice when you put your link in).-- To add a p hoto click on the "square" button (second from the end ). Browse the pho to from your h ard drive orwherever you ha ve it. O ne thing w ith our blogs: Our photos can only be 3 20 px wide... if it's bigger, it will blow outthe right rail. Yeah I see your pictures are broken from yesterday.

I'll have our Tech side look into why.I changed a misspelling in your post yesterday and I wonder if I inadvertently converted out of HTML when I did so, thusbreaking the photos.

War is a very emotional topic, hence the debate. But debate it good, a free flow of information is good .. it's the premise of the First Amendment. It is why, as you know, mostjournalists do their job.Opening the blog up to comments was a good idea and I think just an oversight earlier.

I think if a newspaper or news organization can open up debate or discussion on an important topic, well, that is part of ourrole.

I think you are providing one eye view of the work Americans are doing in Iraq. And some may disagree and they, too, nowhave an opportunity to voice that. I guess in the end, that is the core of democracy.

I thlnk your post was fine.

It was set up as the result of an interview I did with Bill Croyleafter I volunteeered to deploy. When he was interviewing my husband, -old Bill that I was thlnking about creating a blog. Bill asked if I wouldconsider a blog on the Enquirer page. I s?d I'd need to think about it andget approval. Bill also got approvals. I believe he went to Gannet and Iwent to Department of the Army.I saw the blog from the guy who took'issue, he sent me an email also.I guess it means that someone is reading the blog if they are upset with us!I've written into my blog several times what my job entails and Bill wrote itinto the three articles he has writ ten, there is no attempt to hide this fromthe readers.

Comments from everyone is just fine with me, I've had many peoplerequest to make comments.

I think I can handle their comments.

Chris,I just tried to bring in a picture and couldn't get it to load so I saved theblog as a draft. I figure it is because of the amount of material in thecomment section. I can't see the pictures from the blog on Saving Farmlandin Iraq any longer, can you?Do you think my blog on Clearing up a few facts, might help? I felt betterposting it even if they don't listen as the two who have commented so farthat just want to state their opinions about the war.

The Cincinnati Enquirer has ?(number) of bloggers that all post onthe Cincinnati Enquirer web site, none of them work for us, none of them arepaid by us and we don't have editorial control over anything they post. Thisis called freedom of speech and we are open to presenting all views of thepeople who want to post on this blog site or any of our blog sites.

    Just a thought.
