BROUGHTON Newsletter - 1 GRANDPARENTS DAY - 2012 What a wonderful day yesterday was when over 300 grandparents and great-grandparents visited the College to celebrate the effort and achievements of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Junior School. Being a grandparent is a very special stage of life. It is a time when you can reflect on the wonderful mother or father your own child has grown into and to see how they are ensuring that many of your values and beliefs are passed onto your grandchildren. It is a time in which you are able to have the sleep over; to ”have the grand kids for the holidays”; to have that special day out; to have the time that you may not have had in the ‘busyness’ of being a parent, to be able play a game or build models with play-dough; to have special shared experiences and, yes, to do a bit of spoiling. Being a grandparent can also be a very busy stage of life. Grandparents love to go and watch their grandchildren at swimming, to cheer them at sport, to attend the dance concerts, to come to school assemblies to applaud when they receive an award, to help with the running around, to be able to help with the childcare and babysitting or being the emergency carer when grandchildren are not well enough to go to school etc. Being a grandparent is also a time when you are able to share your life experience and wisdom. It is a time when ‘gran’ teaches new skills and ‘pop’ loves to get help in the garden; when ‘ma’ is there to soothe and ‘pa’ wishes to share the story of his life and the family history; it is when ‘grandma and grandpa’ are there to just listen, to give that special cuddle and when needed give sound advice and wisdom. Being a grandparent is also a time of special responsibility. Grandchildren look to their grandparents and see a model of how life should be lived and what are the ‘important things of life’. It is a time in which Grandparents can share the stories of the gospel and to say a prayer for their grandchildren every day. It is the prayer of many of our grandparents that their grandchildren become followers of Christ. Grandchildren see a snapshot of the great unconditional love that God has for each of us displayed in the love grandparents have for them. Yes – there are times grandparents may not like something their grandchild may do, but there is NEVER a time when a grandparent does not love their grandchild. The love that God has for us is even greater than this. Even though we are sinners who do not live as He wishes us to, God will always love us and will forgive us if we accept His Son as our Lord and Saviour. Yesterday was a wonderful time of seeing our students smiling, kissing, hugging and holding the hands of their grandparents. It was truly a special day of the College year. 25 May 2012 Volume 27 No 15

GRANDPARENTS DAY - 2012

What a wonderful day yesterday was when over 300 grandparents and great-grandparents visited the College to celebrate the effort and achievements of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Junior School.

2012-2103 LEADERSHIP CAMP

Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon, and have dinner with the 2012-2013 Prefects Elect at their Leadership Camp. I would like to express how impressed I was with these students as they discussed the concept of ‘servant leadership’ as modelled through Christ. I enjoyed their discussions of aspects of our leadership program and their thoughts for and the structure of the 2012-2013 Prefect Council.

Please keep the 2012-2013 Prefects Elect in your prayers as they consider the expectations and responsibilities of being a student leader before deciding whether to take on this role from the beginning of next term. Also give thanks to our 2011 - 2012 Prefect Council and for their ‘servant heart’ and the strong Christian leadership they have displayed over the past twelve months.

WORKING BEE - MANY THANKS

Last Saturday, several students and parents generously gave their time and came to help the Property team with jobs around the College.

The painting of the seats in the Senior School Quad were finished, garden areas were tidied up around the Hall, English and Humanities blocks, pressure washing outside Canteen, Junior School areas and the COLA was undertaken, the sand pit in the Prep area was re positioned and a mowing of the northern oval.

A special thank you goes to all who came, some for a couple of hours, others for the day and to the parent who provided his tractor and time to the mowing. It has made an excellent improvement to the property. Such voluntary work helps keep the fees down as well as being an enjoyable time of fellowship. Thank you also to the Parents and Friends Association for the provision of morning tea and lunch.

Please note - the next working bee is Saturday 11 August 2012. May I ask you to consider putting this date in your diary.

CYBERSMART EVENING

May I remind parents and students of the Parent Evening on Cyber Awareness to be held at the College on 6 June 2012 commencing at 7.00pm. This evening will support parents in recognising some of the hazards and dangers of the cyber world and to develop strategies to support their children as they use technology.

STAFFING NEWS

Please pray for Mr Geoff Freestone, College Bus Driver, as he recovers from surgery for a broken collar bone. The College has been blessed with the generosity of Mr Stephen Margin who has stepped into this role for a short period of time.

Mrs Katherine Lockeridge (Kinder Blue) commences Maternity Leave at the beginning of Term 3. Mrs Loretta Hooper will replace Mrs Lockeridge on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Deck will take up an additional day with Kinder Blue and work on Monday and Tuesdays. The College is fortunate to have staff of the quality of Mrs Hooper and Mrs Deck to step into this role.

STAFF PROFILE

SHARYN BARTLETT - JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC CO-ORDINATOR

I graduated from Sydney Teachers College- Oatley Campus with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1987. I taught for 4 years in the state system before going on maternity leave. In 1997 I started teaching at Macarthur Anglican School as a peripatetic music teacher as well as doing some casual teaching.

I started teaching at Broughton in 2004, one day per week as the Beginner and Intermediate Band Director then from 2005 started teaching Music in class from Kindergarten to Year 8. I have since become the Coordinator of Junior School Music which is a role I cherish very much. I

Page 3: GRANDPARENTS DAY - 2012 · being the emergency carer when grandchildren are not well enough to go to school etc. ... the Sydney Youth Orchestra , The Sydney Schools Wind Ensemble,

have been blessed to be able to teach at Broughton and share my love of God with the students and my fellow teachers. I enjoy teaching Music in the Junior School and taking the Junior School Concert and Beginner Bands as extra -curricular subjects. Directing the Junior School Musical this year has been an enjoyment for me, and I am looking forward to the performance next term.

I have been a member of various concert bands and orchestras, during my life, playing the clarinet, including the Campbelltown-Camden District Band (1978 to present), the Sydney Youth Orchestra , The Sydney Schools Wind Ensemble, The City of Sydney Concert Band, The Jersey Street Wind Ensemble, Western Sydney Youth Orchestra and The Campbelltown City Orchestra. By being a member of these organisations has enabled me to travel and perform around the world in countries such as England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, America, Canada and Japan, with the highlight being able to perform for the Queen then have her come and speak to the band personally at one of our performances in England in 1987.

I met my husband, Stephen, whilst playing in the City of Sydney Concert Band. He is a French Horn player. We were married in 1989 and have been blessed with 3 beautiful children –Justin (20), Damien (18) and Amy (16). All three are musical and play in the Campbelltown –Camden District Band with Stephen and I, which is an activity we enjoy doing together as a family.

I attend Camden Anglican Church where I regularly attend Bible study and am involved in the music ministry at the 10am service. In my spare time I enjoy sewing, quilting and spending time with my family.

UNIFORMS

Parents are asked to continue to support the College in the correct wearing of the uniform. Students are reminded that they are expected to wear their blazer and hat to and from school. Other uniform guidelines can be found in the Student Handbook. May I remind the boys to ensure that their hair is cut to meet College guidelines. We thank parents for their assistance in this matter.

SUBJECT SELECTION INFORMATION EVENINGS

We have begun our subject selection process for 2013 and students in Year 10 will be attending subject seminars next Monday and Tuesday of courses being offered to Year 11 in 2013.

Parents and students are reminded of the following important Subject Selection and Information Evenings to assist students in selecting subjects for 2013. It is important that both students and parents attend these meetings given the changes to the School Certificate and the Preliminary Certificate.

Year 10 into Year 11 When: Tuesday 29 May

Where: College Hall Time: 7.30pm

Year 8 into Year 9 When: Wednesday 13 June

Where: College Hall Time: 7.30pm

Students are to wear their College winter uniform. Attendance is essential. After the presentation, Heads of Faculty and subject teachers will be on hand to answer any questions.

REPLACEMENT LOCKER KEYS

Students in the Senior School are asked to note that the cost of replacing a lost locker key will increase to $10 as from 1 June 2012. The increase is due to an increase in the cost of the replacement key charged by the locksmith.

PRAYER POINTS

Give thanks for the unconditional love and support that our students receive from their grandparents and great-grandparents.

Pray for the 2012-2013 Prefects Elect as they consider the concept of servant leadership and the expectations and responsibilities of being a student leader.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Although a little cool, it was indeed a wonderful day yesterday as we welcomed so many visitors to our school for Grandparent’s Day. A huge thank you goes to the many grandparents who attended, many travelling long distances. Grandparents of one of the students flew all the way from Thailand. The delight on the children’s faces showed their appreciation.

After enjoying a lovely concert, the grandparents spent time with their

grandchildren in their classrooms. There were some great activities happening including; science experiments, planting seedlings, and making paper planes. Some grandparents even rolled up their sleeves for some handprint painting! It was a special time for everyone. My thanks go to all of the teachers and students for their efforts in making Grandparent’s Day a success. As always, a big hooray for the P&F for their help in catering, and a huge thanks to Mrs Ruth Ewing for her coordination of this event.

On Wednesday, our Kindergarten children took part in National Simultaneous Story Time with the story “The Very Cranky Bear’. The children enjoyed listening to the story on the interactive board as well as a Readers Theatre performance from some Year 10 Students. My thanks go to Mrs Sheerman for her time in preparing this wonderful lesson for our students.

I would like to thank the parents who volunteered their time over the weekend for the College Working Bee. The freshly painted COLA looks wonderful!

SPRING FAIR UPDATE

The College campus looks beautiful at this time with all of the autumn leaves. If only we could skip winter and go straight to spring! If you would like to keep busy throughout winter, you may like to contact Lisa Sims from P&F on how you could help prepare for our upcoming fair. A very productive meeting took place this week, in which stall coordinators were determined for the various grades in the Junior School. Please keep your eye on the P&F section of the newsletter for updates and requests as we lead up the fair.

CYBER SAFETY

On June 6, there will be an Information Evening for Parents on Cyber Safety here at the College. We are recommending parents of Grades 5 and above attend the presentation by Constable Derek Rivers. He will be discussing the dangers of cyberbullying and the possible consequences which govern cyberbullying and harassment.

With so many cooking shows on television these days, are you feeling inspired to cook? Come and purchase a cookbook full of trusted recipes from our College Community. They cost $25 and can be purchased from the main reception or the Junior School Office.

DEBATING

On Friday 18 May, I had the pleasure of accompanying eight Year 5 debaters to the IPSHA Debate held at the King's School, to debate the role of technology in daily life. All present delivered well prepared, confident arguments and rebuttals with eager on-looking parents. The day saw one win and one loss. Congratulations to all debaters on your representation of the college and demonstration of absolute excellence. Angelina Arora deserves special mention for her preparation and confidence which was duly noted by the guest adjudicator.

Mrs Allard

Next week, our HICES team will again be representing the College in a debate about shopping centres being open on all public holidays. We wish them well as they travel with Miss Koeller to Oxley College.

SPORT

IPSSO

It seems that our IPSSO sporting teams are continuing to go from strength to strength! This week we travelled to Wollondilly where our teams played against some valiant opposition. What really shone through on the day was the sportsmanship and fair play of students of both schools. I am glad to report that students were gracious in both defeat and victory. Some of the more noteworthy outcomes were:

The big victory for the Senior Boys Soccer team Jake Harbord, Andrew Griffiths, Reece Mead and Jonathan Ryan were standouts.

Another big victory was the Senior Mixed AFL team, during which our girls controlled the game from the middle and made it very difficult for the opposition to do anything in attack.

The Junior Mixed AFL teams win in which some stand out students included Lara Schweizer who played with increased confidence, Elizabeth Parkinson gaining the first mark in the girls sector and Daniel Edwards and his consistent effort through the game.

The hard fought draw that was played out by our Junior Girls Netball team who are learning to play as a squad and are working well together. Jordyn Campbell as centre played exceptionally well!

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Thursday 7 June, Broughton Anglican College's Junior School will host its annual Athletics Carnival. On the day, students will compete in Shot put, Discus, Long Jump, Turbo Javelin, 100m, 200m and 800m. Trials for High Jump will be held for those students interested at a later date. The top 2-4 athletes in each age group will have the opportunity to compete at the NASSA level. If parents and friends of the College have completed their induction as helpers and would like to assist on the day, could you please leave your name with the Junior Office, and any skill areas or preferences you have. An information note will be sent closer to the date.

The Junior Boys and Girls Oz Tag teams represented the College at the NASSA OZ Tag Gala Day on Thursday 10 May at the Vale of Ah Reserve. Both teams played some remarkable games, and were in close competition for first place. The Boys team placed 4th, with only one win separating them from taking out the title. Well done boys! The Girls squad placed 1st in their competition and are now NASSA OZ Tag Champions for 2012. Well done to all the students who participated on the day, as well as super coach Mr McLeod. The Broughton students represented their College with pride, and their behaviour on an off the field was impeccable.

A further congratulations to Emily North, Sheridan Gallagher and Matthew Quine, who were all selected to represent NASSA at the CIS trials next week.

SPLASH REPORT

Splash is on track to being ready for next term. We were very proud of the students who performed for Grandparents Day and we look forward to the big event.

All students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be getting a t-shirt for the musical. The shirt is part of the costume which Year 3 and 4 students wear at the musical. The Year 5 and 6 backstage and technology teams will also wear their shirts at the musical. The cost of the shirt will be $15 and will be billed to your accounts. The students then keep the shirts as a memento of the musical. Next week the students will try on sample shirts for sizing.

A big thank you goes to Mrs Richardson (Junior School parent) who has attended several rehearsals and helped with choreographing parts of the Musical.

SENIOR SCHOOL PLAY - OUR TOWN BY THORNTON WILDER

Tickets go on sale today for the Senior School play. Students are excited to present their version of Thornton Wilder's classic play Our Town. There will be 4 performances across 3 days from June 21 to June 23 and you are invited to share in this exciting

college event. You can purchase tickets at www.broughton.nsw.edu.au

Why do we produce plays and musicals at Broughton?

We value the opportunity that productions such as this provide for our students to develop and express their God given gifts and talents. The collaborative nature of theatre encourages students to value each individual’s contribution just as we are called to do as the Body of Christ.

Drama and Theatre is a powerful educational tool. Drama is at its best when it reflects life in all its pain and wonder and used to create identification with an audience, to expose a problem and to present ‘a slice of life’ in which audiences readily see themselves. This is what we are hoping to do with Our Town. One of the main characters in the play says

“We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars… everybody

Page 8: GRANDPARENTS DAY - 2012 · being the emergency carer when grandchildren are not well enough to go to school etc. ... the Sydney Youth Orchestra , The Sydney Schools Wind Ensemble,

BROUGHTON Newsletter - 8

knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human.”

Our Town is not a Christian play and God is not directly mentioned, however, there are moments throughout that powerfully point to God and how he created us for eternal relationship with Him. As it says in Ecclesiastes 3 God has “placed Eternity in the hearts of men.”

AFRICAN AIDS FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER DINNER

YEAR 11 REPORT FROM THE HOSPITALITY TEAM FOR THE AFRICAN AIDS FOUNDATION DINNER

On Monday 14 May, Year 11 Hospitality prepared, cooked and served Year 12 for their annual fundraising dinner. The dinner was a great success and we all enjoyed the evening working together in the commercial kitchen and Function Centre. Parker said “Monday night went off with a bang cooking and preparing meals for 100 guests. This was a large function experience but we were up to the challenge!”

We began preparation for the dinner on the Wednesday before in our three hour practical class. Thank goodness for the freezer as we were able to store it all safely until Monday. Other preparation was left until Monday afternoon so after a full day at school we changed into our chef’s uniform, for those working back of house, and into our black and white vests and aprons, for those serving front of house. The service of pre dinner dips and drinks on arrival at the cafeteria went well with a great deal of excitement over the Year 12 fancy dress choices. Back of house was meanwhile mashing potatoes and preparing to serve the Mains with alternate service continuing with the never ending trail of dirty dishes and glasses through the dishwasher. We needed to fit into the agenda for the dinner so after a break for speeches and trivia we served dessert. Clean up and the washing and drying of hundreds of plates and glasses followed along with cooking pots and pans. While Year 12 was off dancing the night away we were clearing and cleaning the function areas. Though very tired by ‘close down’ we still had a very enjoyable experience and definitely showed how well we could work as a catering team. We are now really looking forward to our Year 12 AAF Fundraising Dinner in 2013!

YEAR 12 REPORT ON THE AFRICAN AIDS FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER DINNER ON MONDAY 14 MAY

The Year 12 Dinner Committee had spent many weeks planning and preparing for a great night of fun, feasting and dancing. Our theme was Heroes and Villains and so on arrival, it was exciting to come across such a huge variety of inventive costumes! Everyone had gone to so much effort for the night which paid off. It was enjoyable to talk to everyone about the choices they had made and so many photos were taken of such a memorable night. (Watch out for this year’s BACCHAT)

The Year 11 Hospitality class did a wonderful job providing the function with food and service. We were welcomed with drinks and finger food and later on a sit down meal and dessert. The mains were either Beef Stroganoff or Chicken with a Tomato Bacon Sauce served with creamy mashed potato and a leafy salad. Desserts were Steamed Chocolate Pudding with Berry Coulis or the crowd favourite Hokey Pokey Ice cream. With alternate service at the table there was a great deal of negotiating for our favourite meal!

During the evening, the committee organised to run trivia. This was very much enjoyed by all of Year 12 and the teachers who came for our dinner. It was also exciting to see the array of characters people had dressed up as, and

Page 9: GRANDPARENTS DAY - 2012 · being the emergency carer when grandchildren are not well enough to go to school etc. ... the Sydney Youth Orchestra , The Sydney Schools Wind Ensemble,

BROUGHTON Newsletter - 9

during the trivia segment Rebekah Galanto was announced as winning the best dressed award for the night. Congratulations to Rebekah.

Following dessert, all of Year 12 joined together on the dance floor in the cafeteria. Mr Margin and Mr Noakes impressed us with their music selections as our resident DJs. Playing classics like MJ and Grease and more recent chart toppers like Usher!

Thank you to the committee who organised the evening and did all the decorating, as well as Madeleine Lidbetter for being MC of the night. A huge thank you goes to Dr and Mrs Schwarz for their presentation to Year 12 about the work of the African Aids Foundation. It was great to learn more about the foundation and how we might help so many children orphaned by HIV.

SECONDARY PHOTO DAY AND SIBLING PHOTOS

College photos will be taken on Thursday 31 May 2012. Year Group, Portrait and Sibling photos will be taken on the day while all other group photos will be taken on 14 June 2012. Students are to be in correct College uniform meeting College dress expectations.

Envelopes for sibling photos can be collected from Mr. van der Schyff at the Technology staffroom.

Students are required to return the photo envelopes with exact money or use the online payment option (instructions are enclosed in the envelopes students received). Envelopes are to be handed to the PHOTOGRAPHER on photo day.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this week’s winner of Writer of the Week. This week’s entry is from Ashar Mirza of Year 12 highlighting his protagonist’s emotional loss.

Misery and realisation seemed to strike me like a bullet as my eyes found a broken figure lying next to me. My whole body seemed to freeze in that one moment when the terror of reality crystallised. An endless flow of tears stained my skin, poisoning in their luminous trail, as the disconsolate atmosphere around me obstructed the very air my lungs were struggling to seize. My world seemed lost, lost to agonising dreams and memories that now blurred past my bloodshot eyes. As the truth began to overwhelm me, my hands trembled viciously, my heart throbbing erratically and I tore my immovable gaze from the limp figure at my knees.

SPORT NEWS

Broughton has continued to produce excellent results over the past few weeks in sport.

At the recent NASSA cross country carnival, our senior boys lived up to their high expectations by winning the 17-19 years boys division. This is a fantastic achievement from our boys and it is the first time we have won a division at this carnival. Well done boys! We finished 5th overall in the carnival and we are continuing to improve each year. Well done to all those students who represented the College.

Individually we had some excellent results as well with Matthew Ryan finishing 2nd in the 18 boys and James Van der Schyff finishing 3rd. Jackson Gray also finished 3rd in the 12 years boys to go with his excellent achievements in

swimming this year. We will have 13 students compete for the NASSA team at the AICES cross country coming up on Thursday 7 June. Good luck to all those competing.

In other sports we recently had both Delfeayo Francis and Lucy Chapman selected in the AICES Football sides. Both of these students will go to compete at the CIS championships and hopefully gain selection into the CIS team.

In Hockey, Sally-Ann Legge was selected as the goalkeeper in the open CIS Girls Hockey team. This goes on the back of her selection into the U/16 Girls team. James Van der Schyff was also selected into the Open Boys Hockey team. Both of our students will compete at Hockeyfest later in the year.

Abbey Gillam was selected into the AICES U/15 Girls Netball team at the recent AICES netball championships. The NASSA side she competed in finished second, continuing the excellent results NASSA has achieved this year.

NASSA is the first level of sport representation that our students achieve beyond representing the College. NASSA representatives compete in AICES championships where they hope to be selected to represent the AICES association. Both NASSA and AICES have had a history of competing strongly at all representative carnivals and Broughton students are more frequently contributing to this success.

Congratulations to all our athletes on their recent success.

Our annual Athletics Carnival is coming up on Friday 8 June. It is a great day for our students to show their abilities in a range of track and field events and enjoy the spirit of our House competition. Parents are welcome to come and support their children. If any parents are available to assist staff with the running of events on the day, please contact Mr Strong who will gladly appreciate your help on the day.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Kindergarten took part in this event on Wednesday. Right across Australia school libraries and municipal libraries simultaneously read the book The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland.

First the children watched and listened to the The Very Cranky Bear App from Mrs Sheerman’s iPad

which was screened onto the Smart Board.

This was followed by a Readers’ Theatre performance of the story by Year 10 students.

At the end the children were encouraged to be the ‘Cranky Bear’ throughout a repeat of the story and hold a smiley bear mask to their faces at the end when Bear is finally happy!

A great deal of fun was had by all – especially the Senior Students in the IRC who were supposedly ‘studying’ but were actually enjoying the whole performance.

GRANDPARENTS DAY IN THE IRC

A record number of Grandparents came over to the IRC and purchased a book to donate to the collection. Many were obviously enjoying looking at the books and the IRC learning spaces with their grandchildren. Thank you to all who purchased books and left a legacy for their grandchildren and all current and future students.

OLD BOOKS, DVD’s and CD’s

We will also be holding a second hand book and DVD stall at the Spring Fair. If you have any old books, DVD’s, CD’s or even old cooking, fishing magazines etc, that are in good condition and no longer needed we would appreciate your donations. Please just ensure that items being donated are APPROPRIATE for school use (i.e. no bad language or explicit scenes).

These items can also be placed in a collection box at Junior School Office, or if you have a bulk delivery please contact P&F at email p&[email protected] so that we can assist.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN PROGRAM- SAVE YOUR STICKERS!

Woolworths Supermarkets are running a program which will provide rewards to schools when you do your grocery shopping with them.

Schools can choose from many reward items which include things like, books, science equipment, art equipment, sports and outdoor equipment. If you already are a Woolworths shopper please help us to gain lots of rewards points.

Please start collecting your Woolworths ‘stickers’ at the checkout and either bring them to school (place in collection boxes in Junior School Office or Sports Centre) or start attaching to a ‘MY STICKER CARD’ which is also available at the Woolworths checkout. The more stickers we get, the more reward items we can get for the College.
