Ergo Grants q  Dept. annual competitive application process

§  Over $175,000 requested for 59 projects. Funded 25 projects with $45,000 central fund. Dept. cost sharing nearly doubles the impact.

q  Individuals with medical accommodation needs §  $10,000 fund to cost share with departments for

medical ergonomics clients needing significant equipment purchase to meet their work and medical needs. Maximum offer of $200 per client, and only if accommodation cost exceeds $400.

Before: “Instructors are currently sitting in chairs with no ergonomic support for long hours spent grading and meeting with students. This is causing aches and pains for most of our instructors with back and neck pains being most common”

After: “I really love the chair's adjust-ability. Some days, I spend a lot of time sitting and working at my desk. It's great to be able to periodically adjust the chair and work from a new position!”

Before: “The nurses at BHC are on the phones 8 hours a day. Many times, after sitting for long periods, legs/hips/bums will be numb/sore. We think if we had a chance to stand and do our work, we would be more comfortable and able to change position easier.”

After: “The staff would recommend this equipment to others in future. They are using it often.” (Note by Ergo: keyboard tray and screen should be lower than pictured)

Before: “Gallons of paint are stored well over head height, which requires reach and lift 10lb. buckets over our heads and down to the counter. The counter itself is uncomfortable to work and stand at, as it is approximately four inches too tall for someone of average height. ”

After: “It’s so much more comfortable to stand at the new table and mix paint. ”

Before: “Several staff experienced back pain after sitting in these chairs all day. In addition, the chairs have limited height adjustment, most users cannot adjust them to a work height that is conducive to pain free work ”

After: “Staff members have commented on how much more comfortable the new chairs feel compared to the old ones. They are better able to focus when using the more ergonomic chair.”

Before After

Before: “Pain is shoulder and upper back pain. We would need chairs that could be low in order for our elderly and ill patients to easily slide into it and then for us to move the chair up so we would not be bending down and injuring the same muscles over and over again. ”

After: “. . . overwhelming positive response from all employees and patients who have experienced the new chair. Employees feel much more comfortable being at eye level with patients while taking their blood pressure. ”

Before: “The Medical Assistants and Clerical staff work together to move these extremely heavy tables and all the chairs. . . These moves are causing neck/back/elbow discomfort. They are also very afraid to do this task for fear they will be injured.”

Before: “Faculty need a way to transport bulky/heavy instruments and other teaching materials to teaching sites around campus.”

After: “I sure appreciate it. It is handy that the cart folds so we can put it in a car if needed.”

Before: “Employee working at the computer station behind the desk has to stand up to assist the customers, the employee has to spend a great deal of their 12 hour shift, bent over from a standing position trying to access multiple programs.”

After: “It is great to be able to stand up and assist the customers on the computer.”

Before: “With the introduction of the electronic medical record, it has become necessary to face the computer monitor while typing to document care. We must either lose eye contact with our patients, or maintain a non-ergonomic position to face our patients while still using the computer.”

Before: “In the athletic medicine clinic, certified athletic provide hands on manual therapy. Most of our treatment tables are fixed height and do not allow proper ergonomic technique for soft tissue and manual therapies.”

After: “I’ve noticed a great change in the way I stretch, treat, and evaluate the athletes- I’m no longer putting myself in uncomfortable positions in order to adapt to different athletes on a fixed-height table.”

Before: “In the. . .dermatology clinics the monitors and the keyboards are low causing ergonomic difficulties. There is no room for a chair or separate computer table in the exam rooms. ”

After: “The computer arms allowed our faculty/residents to enter information into Mi-Chart without having to hunch down causing lower back pain and also allowed them to have more eye contact with the patient vs. having their back turned to them.”

Before: “The lab stools used by employees do not allow for height adjustment to accommodate all users of different heights, causing back, arm and neck strain.”

After: “We really love the new chairs because we used to have back aches and feel exhausted just from sitting for too long on the chair-like things we had before. The new chairs have helped in this regard.”

Before: “[Employees experiencing] Knee and back discomfort when crawling under the low hanging duct work and piping. Also, the possibility of head and back bumps when crawling under duct and piping. Multiple trips could be required increasing the potential of pain and or injury.”

After: “[Employees] Happy with the changes. Makes the area more accessible for routine and preventative work.”

Before: “Reports of discomfort related to use of the workstation on wheels include eye strain, neck strain, back strain and wrist strain. The laptop is too small, causing the person using the space to have to physically lean forward to see the screen. It is not providing ample workspace, leading to awkward positioning to get work done.”

After: “Milk Room staff relayed comments such as “I have enough room to work and complete my tasks” and “I no longer have to lean forward to see the computer screen”. Overall the Milk Room employees have expressed much appreciation for the desk and feel grateful for the ability to perform work tasks with proper positioning. ”

Before: “The main office is in desperate need for some upgrades; non adjustable chairs and low sitting desks. The office poses risks of job dis-satisfaction and risk management. ”

Before: “While working under beds and stretchers employees must sit cross legged or kneel on the floor. This work can take hours to perform. It is very hard on the knees and back.”

After: “It is much more comfortable to preform many task which used to be done while sitting cross legged or on hands and knees. Everyone who comes in our shop while I am work with this lift comment what a great idea it is.”

Before: “Sitting at a microscope with non ergonomic knobs for long periods can lead to back aches. Repetitive pipetting can lead to pain in the hand.”

After: “The lab members are extremely happy with the pipettes. One commented “my hand does not hurt” after pipetting.”

Before: “ Employees frequently complain of shoulder and neck tension as well as how uncomfortable they are using a ladder.”

Before: “There are 3 dedicated Call Center stations [] requesting help for adjustable work stations that would enable us to stand as well as sit when needed. ” Employees are unable to stand and walk hourly.

After: “The ergo desktop offers comfort and stability when transitioning from sitting and standing. The call center is more alert and fewer errors occurs.”
