Location: The prospect is located at 3,3.30 feet eleTation on a

sharp ridge in the north edge of sec. 24 near the¼ comer between eec.

l)-24, T. 36 s., R. 9 W. The proapect ia reached Ti.a th• Chroae Ridge

Road and is about 20 miles from Ga.lice.

"Th• Elkhorn prospect is in Josephine County- on the crest. of the ridge between Brush Creek and El.khom Creek. It ii approximately- l mile from the Chrome Ridge road and 37 milea .trom Merlin, the nearest rail shipping point. AcceH is b7 the count;r road that 1"ollows the Rogue River to Gallce, then by- the Galic• Creek and Chrome Ridge roads. The latter road is impaaa­able from lovember through March because of snow. The area has high relief, but an access road could easi]3 be bulldozed to the prospect frOJll the Chrome Ridge road l>7 tollow.1.ng the ridge.

"Two small, elongated poda or rhodonite occur in a banded quartzite that ha.a been folded intensely-. There ia great vari­ation. in the attitude of the quartzite because of the extreme .foldi~.

"Development conaists or 2 pits 5 feet deep and a trench 3 to 6 feet deep (fig. 10). Rhodonite and intermixed quarts occur in the trench and in one or the pits as elongated poda oriented parallel to the told axes of the quartzite. The largest pod occurs along the crest of an anticlinal fold and strike• I. 27° W., with & dip of 40° E. It is exposed in one of the pits to a depth ot 5 feet. The smaller pod in the trench is exposed to a depth or 3 feet. It strikes N. 2° E. and dips 46° w.

"The principal mineral is rhodonite that has been alter­ed to the oxides of manganese to a depth of one-half inch on fracture surfaces. At the south end or the wst pod altera­tion to the oxidea of manganese extends to a depth of 1 toot.
