Tuesday Communion Service After many years of having a Tuesday communion service at St Mary's we have made the decision that with falling numbers we should stop this service. This service has been an important part of the worshipping life of St Mary's and I want to thank all those who have run services over the years and those who have supported this sevice. While it is sad that this service has now ceased we also recognise that we have many new things happening at St Mary's which have begun in recent years.

Toddlers at St Mary’s All families with pre-school aged children are welcome to join in the fun at our toddler group in St Mary’s, Freeland. There are many toys, a craft table and we have a Christian themed story every week. The singing section is brought to life using puppets, props and musical instruments. The group runs during term time on Thursdays from 10am to 11.30am and everyone is very welcome. If you would like to know more then please contact Helen on 882044 or David on 881270.

Letter from the Rector:

Dear friends,

I have been really struck by the words of a song playing recently on the radio. The song is 'Let her go' by Passenger and the first few words of the song go like this:

“Well you only need the light when it's burning low Only miss the sun when it starts to snow Only know you love her when you let her go Only know you've been high when you're feeling low Only hate the road when you're missing home.”

I think this song recognises a great truth that all of us take things for granted………. we take them for granted until we don't have them any more - and then we miss them.

I have also been horrified by how Syria is being destroyed by the fighting going on at the moment. But it isn't just Syria is it? There are problem in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Israel, Palestine, Iran and Iraq - the list goes on. Even the USA is really suffering as a result of gun crime.

We face a lot of problems both individually and as a country - but we do enjoy relative peace, stability and prosperity. We don't always recognise how fortunate we are. It is not easy to enjoy good things when they are in plentiful supply - but I encourage you to to do so. Let us enjoy the highs of life while we have them - and pray that we never get to the lows.

I encourage you just for a moment to stop and thank God for all the good things you have.

With my love and best wishes ,

David

TOUR OF HAITI…GUNDRY STYLE!

How do you summarise 1264 miles and 13 days in short? With difficulty! However, having just cycled through 29 counties in England and Wales, following the outline of Haiti to raise money for a Child Survival Unit in Haiti, we would like to give thanks for the generous local support for our venture which has raised over £8000 for the child development charity, Compassion UK, to use.

The cycle ride had its ups and downs! Most hills of significance were to be found in the first half of the ride in Wales, the Peak District and around Huddersfield. We saw the wilds of the Brecon Beacons and Mid Wales, the sheep pastures of the Peaks, the Roman roads of Lincolnshire, the suburbs of Coventry, Birmingham and Potters Bar. Cycling all weathers, rain, sleet, wind and sun, we can confidently say ‘it was never too warm’.

We chose to support Compassion because of the plight of those in Haiti and hope that by doing so “in Jesus’s name” God will bless all the monies raised to benefit mums and toddlers in Haiti that are most in need. We would like to thank everyone locally who has done so much to support us, in prayer, in practical ways, in giving to this worthwhile charity…THANK YOU!

Oh and by the way, with a few about turns, slight route alterations and cycling from stage ends to designated campsites we actually did 1360 miles with our children Hannah and Sam adding a tidy 200 miles, and for those with a head for heights, between us we gained 75,941 feet during our 13 day adventure.

Our JustGiving site is still open for donations if you wish to swell the total even more at www.justgiving.com/tourofhaiti

OUR BARBECUE AND FETE is on Sunday 14th JULY from 11.00am till 3.00pm. Do come and join us. The lunch provided is a full two course Meal not just a Burger and a Bun, so make this your Sunday Lunch. There will also be various Stalls trying to persuade you to spend your money and help the Church. It is also a chance to enjoy our beautiful Grounds and Gardens which are open free on the Sunday during the Fete and also on the day before – the Saturday from 2.00pm till 5.00pm.

A RETREAT will be held at St Peter’s on Saturday 6th July from 10.30am till 4.00pm with Mass at 12 Noon. It will be led by Father Michael Dolman the Spiritual Director of the Youth Service for the Diocese and is especially suitable for anyone involved in sharing the faith with children or young people.

THE CHILDREN’S LITURGY every Sunday is a time during the first half of Mass when our little children go out to the Hall and have their own special time. The adults who run this Liturgy are a great group and so we are going to say a big thank you to them on Sunday 7th July. This is one of the 4 Sundays in the Year when the children stay in Church and come up to the front so Father Martin can talk to them. Some adults say they find his Homily on these Sunday – more a series of little talks for the children – the highlight of the year!

YOU CAN VISIT OUR CHURCH any time during daylight hours, and by getting the EYNSHAM ABBEY Leaflet just inside the door, you can also visit the site of the Abbey and see where it was even though all its remains are underground. We get many visitors exploring this ancient site and all are very welcome. It makes a good summer outing and, if you want to, you can then follow the Eynsham Abbey Trail which makes a good summer circular walk down to the Fishponds and through the fields and back into the Village. The Leaflet for this is also just inside the Church.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL LISA’S NOTES FROM THE MEETING HELD ON 10th JUNE 2013

CRF Update The CRF Project continues to progress well and is currently on schedule for completion on time. The external building work is nearly complete and the main focus is now on the internal fixtures and fittings. Extra fund-raising is still needed as the one of the grant conditions is that photo-voltaic panels (costing £11,500) are to be installed on the roof at some point, for which the Parish Council does not have sufficient funds. Any help with funding for these panels would be greatly appreciated.

Change of meeting date A reminder that the July Parish Council meeting date has been changed to Monday 8th July.

Allotments Two water tanks have been purchased from funds received from the allotment rents and these will be installed on the allotments shortly. Please be aware that permission must be granted by the Parish Council for any sheds, greenhouses or outbuildings on the allotments, and that plots must be kept in a good state of cultivation.

Broadband Champion The Parish Council is looking for someone with a keen interest in computers and IT to become a “Broadband Champion” for our area. The person will link with other Broadband Champions around the county and there will be meetings to attend to try and improve the Broadband speed in our village. Anyone who is interested please contact me via email at [email protected] or on 01993 880067.

Ivy trimming in village Unfortunately this had to be cancelled on the day and following receipt of some concerns from residents about disturbing wildlife and nesting birds, it has been agreed not to rearrange a further date but to leave things as they are for now.

Best Kept Garden Competition A reminder that the second judging date for the competition is Wednesday 14th August. Members of Witney Horticultural Society inspected the front gardens of the village in June and any that showed promise will be inspected again in August. Good luck to everyone!

Notice Boards You may have noticed that the two open style notice boards have now had cork tiles placed on them, which should make it much easier to attach notices to them. Please do not use staples to attach notices to the tiles.

Car Park at Hanborough Station It was reported this month that the new car park at Hanborough Station will be opening in the next 2-4 weeks. The cost to park there will be £3.50 per day. When the car park is opened double yellow lines will be installed around the grass verges on the main road and traffic wardens will be monitoring the area and issuing tickets for any cars parked illegally. During July we continue with the theme ‘On the move ’. The children will be exploring all sorts of transport through a variety of activities which will include music and movement, musical instruments and song, craft and role-play.

To complement the theme ‘on the move’ we have planned a walk and picnic in the woods which will be open to all the children and their families at pre-school.

In addition to this we will be enjoying some ever popular cooking activities and end the term with a show and tell week.

The children have been making good use of the new outdoor canopy which has enhanced the learning environment for the children. We are now able to offer the children even more choice outside. The children have particularly enjoyed the floor activities outside, such as block work or small world play.

Request for rugs The pre-school is looking for a few, flat pile, rugs to keep in the new outdoor space for floor activities. If you have a rug you no longer want, pre-school would be very grateful for it.

This is the last term at Pre-school for some of the children as they will be moving on into F1 in September. To celebrate their time with us we will be holding a leaver’s party with a visit from the Salt Box Music Company and finish with a graduation ceremony.

There are still some spaces for September so if you would like your child to attend please ring us as soon as possible (between 8.45am and 3.15pm) on 01993 882945, or email [email protected] to give us your details and help us to plan ahead. Over the summer holiday please contact us by email and we will respond to you as soon as we can. Our admissions policy sets out the criteria by which places are allocated and is available to read on our website: www.freelandpreschool.org

We would like to wish all the families of Freeland Pre-school a great summer!

*************************************** CHRISTIAN AID 2013

A tremendous thank you to all the collectors who helped with this year’s House to House collection. The final total collected was £1273.46, £1.04 more than 2012! This is a very good total when money is tight and there are so many charities after our money. Many thanks also to everyone who gave money, particularly to some who were very generous. A letter of thanks from Christian Aid will be put up on the Church Notice board. Janet Dalton

CONCERT - ST MARY’S CHURCH FREELAND

West Oxfordshire Clarinets (WOC) will be giving a Tea Concert on Sunday 7th July at 3pm. Music, tea and cakes – what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

********************************************** FREELAND GARDENING CLUB

What an unusual evening we had at the May meeting when Stuart Phillips came to tell us ‘Don’t throw it away, it’s in the Bag’. He arrived with a large bag much the size of a carry on bag on an aircraft and proceeded to pull out all manner of items both useful and unusual and some that he wouldn’t recommend using! There were weird plant pots, remedies for getting rid of pests, and one item that even he didn’t know the use of! Many more strange things arrived, some of which we had to guess what they were for! Hopefully some people will remember his suggestions and make use of them! Stuart was very interested in the work of Bridewell Organic Gardens and donated his fee to them.

Janet Cropley who was unable to come to us in January will be the speaker on Monday 24th June at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall. Her talk is entitled ‘Plants which should be better known’. So many of us use the ‘old favourites’ year after year so it will be really helpful to have some new ideas. She may even bring a few for sale but if not, will no doubt tell us where we can buy them.

On Monday 22nd July at 7.30pm also in Freeland Hall Rod d’Ayala will speak about ‘Wildlife Focus on BBOWT Reserves’. So many of us are now interested in promoting wildlife in our gardens so this subject should interest most people and maybe we can follow some of the methods employed on the BBOWT reserves locally. We all look forward to the OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND AND ST MARY’S FLOWER FESTIVAL on 29th/30th June. Congratulations to those organising the event for all their hard work and to all the gardeners who are opening their gardens. We do hope there is sunshine and warmer weather for the weekend.

A day trip to Saville Garden is planned for 6th July. There are not many places left so do contact Brian Wildblood on 883968 if you are interested in going. Saville Garden is in Windsor Great Park and is a world renowned garden of 35 acres of ornamental beds and woodland. The rose garden in a contemporary design is of particular interest for its bright colours and scents. In July the roses should be at their best.

Bridewell Organic Gardens at Wilcot offers gardening to people with mental health problems and does wonderful work. They have a number of open days during the summer, information about which can be found on the notice boards, and on page 37 of this Grapevine. It is an interesting walled garden with many unusual features and well worth a visit, so do try to support them if you can.

Visitors and new members are very welcome to all meetings.

Despite the season finishing it has been a busy time for Freeland Football Club. First up we held our Presentation Evening at Witney Lakes, a few drinks were drunk, and a few shapes were thrown on the dance floor and the following players received their awards: Neil Howe (Firsts Players Player), Lewis White (Firsts Managers Player), Tom Scroggs (Reserves Players Player), Sam Symonds (Reserves Managers Player), Tom Matthews (A’s Players Player), Adi Williams (A’s Managers Player), Lewis White (Yeoman Players Player), Conor Allmond (Yeoman Managers Player), Lewis White (AGAIN!) (Supporters Player), Matthew Hardy (The Law Cup) and last and by no means least Big Sam Symonds (The Brian Heany Memorial Trophy). There was also one more prize on offer as the Oxfordshire Senior League awarded Jon “Scholsey” Langford the Linesman of the Year award. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to everyone once again who took part in making the season happen.

The club also held their AGM at the Methodist Church on the 10th June and apologies – I have another list for you – the following people were re-elected and elected onto the committee. Jon Langford (President), Steve O’Hara (Chairman), Matthew Hardy (Vice Chairman, UTVL Fixture Secretary), Ben Symonds (Secretary), Lora Simpkins (Treasurer), Sam Symonds (Senior League Fixture Secretary), Robert Panting (Witney & District Fixture Secretary, A Team Manager), Ben Sadler (Firsts Manager), Simon Hole (Reserves Manager), Ethan Simlett (Yeoman Manager). Jamie Leach, Michelle Hicks, Harry Irwin, Andy Hicks and James Blackmore were also elected on as committee members. Phew!

So now our attentions have turned to the 2013/14 season, and with the CRF taking shape and some new faces to the committee it looks like being an exciting season. The first port of call is our 6-a-side tournament which will be taking place this year on the 10th August 2013, be sure to get yourselves down the playing field and enjoy the day with us. If you would like to promote your business in the programme for the day then please get in contact with myself (07917 631742), Ben Symonds (07977 065784) or Jon Langford (07774 114310).

Our preseason training will be starting at 18.30 on 4th July on the playing field, all players welcome, old and new. If you have any queries regarding this, please give me a buzz. Finally, as always, I will mention our club website – www.freelandfc.co.uk – with a new season looming we have added some exciting new features, including a Club Shop full of retro Freeland kits, a chance to sponsor a Freeland player for the season for just a fiver and Freeland Football Club Fantasy Football, brought to you in partnership with Oxford Welding Supplies. Be sure to get logged on and check it all out.

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP

We would like to thank Helen Gronbech for her time as Chair of the Group, and Graeme Woodhouse for his work as Treasurer, and his time with the Cubs, they both stepped down from the groups executive committee at the recent AGM, along with Kelly Barrett & Lesley Bartlett, thank you all.

We are looking for a new Chairperson and a Publicity Rep if anyone fancies a job!

Beavers - Under new leadership of Steve Mellin & Tracy Neville the colony is going from strength to strength. It’s unfortunate that we have reached a stage where Beavers have to leave when they are 8 and wait for a Cub place as the pack is full.

Cubs - We are in great need of new adult volunteers here! Graeme has recently stepped down, Justin will be finishing at the end of this term and Elliott is off to university in September! We have welcomed Steve Page as a new leader, but unless we find some more adults, Cubs may not reopen in September.

Scouts - We have a full troop and next year Cubs may well have to wait until a place is available as we have lots to come up and not many to leave. Our recent week’s camp to Hampshire was a great success. 20 Scouts enjoyed mountain biking in the New Forest, Splashdown Water Park and Portsmouth dockyards as well as cooking for themselves for the week! The team that won the County Cooking Competition, Jack, Charlie, Daisy and Hugo spent a day at Le Manoir Quat Saisons in their training school making some fantastic food!

Explorer Scouts - More adult help would be appreciated in this 14 – 18 year olds section. We regularly have 15+ members. They have recently been to Wychwood music festival for a weekend, to pick up litter and enjoy the bands! They are also working towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, alongside Scout Awards and some members help with the younger sections within the group.

As a group we are all looking forward to the One World County Camp in July, with 120 members from all sections attending. The last County Camp was Zodiac in 2009.

If you feel you would like to get involved with our successful group in any way please get in touch with our Group Scout Leader Gwilym Mason 882685.

FREELAND & LONG HANBOROUGH WINE CLUB

Fairtrade Wines 31st May 2013 Every other month the Wine Club meets to taste, discuss and review wines from around the world. The variety and choice of wines is made by one of the members who have offered him or herself to undertake the job. We were lucky this month in having Martin Marais undertaking the role. In fact doubly so, in addition to choosing great wines he chose to take those wines from the Fairtrade wine label, I guess most will have enjoyed, foods, chocolate, coffee, teas etc. from Fairtrade but very few of us had tried many of the wines.

It was with interest that we waited for the first wines, in fact the very first wine was a mystery wine, it was up to the members to decide what wine this was, in fact not a Fairtrade wine a local wine, as it turned out the first local wine for the evening, a white from The Brightwell Vineyard, a very fine and crisp white, the 2011 Oxford Gold.

The Fairtrade whites were good but the one that seemed to be most popular was the Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch. The Red wines were headed by the Malbec from the Argentina

Our thanks go to Martin for a good selection of wines and allowing us the chance to try such a well-chosen range of wines.

The second ‘home grown’ wine was provided by Adrian Baughan. A wine that was ‘interesting’ but sadly not available commercially. Many thanks to Adrian for the chance to enjoy.

Our next meeting will be at the end of July. For more information about this and about the Club try the Club’s Blog at http://thefandlwineclub.blogspot.co.uk/
