?A New Sermon Series begins May 1

Have you ever felt that life is conspiring against you? Have you been looking for hope and direction? In the Old Testament story of Joseph, we discover a man who is tested in extraordinary ways and is stronger as a result. Yet in the beginning, Joseph’s life showed very little promise: the youngest of thirteen children, a dreamer who was hated by his brothers. So where did Joseph get the qualities of integrity, leadership, and godliness that enabled him to change from being a slave to becoming the Prime Minister of Egypt? Join us each Sunday as we see God conspiring to work in the life of Joseph.

Women’s MinistryFirst Presbyterian Church

Greenville, South Carolina

Everything needs a little sprucing up now and then, and that’s just what’s happened to the Women’s Ministry Room, located near the Sanctuary across from the Nursery and the Flower Room. Taking advantage of unused funds designated for the Women’s Ministry, we were able to give the room a complete makeover, with refreshed and updated paint,

Come see our “New” Women’s Ministry Room

furnishings, window treatments, and decorations. The overall effect is calm, peaceful, warm, and inviting.

This room is used for Women’s Circle meetings, small group Bible studies, planning and leadership meetings, and various prayer groups.

We would love for you to stop by and see your “new” room—it is Room

number 212. We also invite you to enjoy the room for meetings, small groups, or just to relax with friends. If you would like to use this space, be sure to reserve your time with Barbara Seibel at the Reception Desk (235.0496) beforehand.

Monthly: The Crossby John Stott

Three lessons on “The Cross,” a study by John Stott, will be taught by our own Nancy Caudel on the second Tuesday of each month this summer. Books are available in The Vineyard bookstore.

Working ladies, bring your lunch; we’ll provide coffee, tea, and orange water. Moms, a nursery will be provided. Bring your friends, meet some new sisters in Christ, and enjoy this in-depth look at the impact of the cross on our daily living in the modern world.

Weekly: Holiness by J. C. Ryle

J. C. Ryle, a Bishop of the Church of England in the 1800s, had a deep conviction for many years that practical holiness and entire self-consecration to God were not sufficiently attended to by Christians. Ryle says, “The immense importance of ‘adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour’ (Titus 2:10), and making it lovely and beautiful by our daily habits and tempers, has been far too much overlooked. Sound Protestant and Evangelical doctrine is useless if it is not accompanied by a holy life. It is worse than useless: it does positive harm.” It is his firm impression that we need a thorough revival about Scriptural holiness, which is what this study is all about.

FAll: A Woman of Graceby Richard Gibbons and Associates

The Women of our church are in for a big treat next fall—Pastor Gibbons and two associate pastors will lead us in a weekly Bible Study of the book of Ephesians, entitled “Becoming a Woman of Grace.”Each week we will begin with a 45-minute teaching time by Dr. Gibbons or one of the other pastors; we will then break into small groups to discuss the lecture and review homework. (Homework is always optional.) Please plan to join us in the fall for a wonderful time in God’s Word as we enjoy the fellowship of other women!

Mission Outreach: Item of the MonthEach month the Women’s Ministry collects an “Item of the Month” for one of the mission outreaches we support. We encourage all members of the church to participate in this opportunity to serve our community. The May Item of the Month is Preschool Art Supplies for A Child’s Haven. The art supplies include construction paper, glue sticks, simple paint or crayon sets, crayons, stickers, colored pencils, markers, coloring books, etc. Take the items to the Women’s Ministry Room (Room 212) and leave them in the gray box in the closet.

Spotlight on Circle #4Through the years, about 15 loyal members of Circle #4 have been meeting each month in homes for coffee, treats, inspiring Bible study, and precious fellowship. The group, which began meeting about 30 years ago, is especially devoted to praying and caring for each other, supporting each other through life’s challenges. This circle also faithfully supports its global missionaries, Alex and Jamie Pettet, and its local mission agency, Generation Group Home. In past years, the members have visited their local mission agencies and continue to be closely involved in their community commitment. Jo Ussery, the Circle Chair, summed up the group well when she said, “We definitely feel the Lord’s presence each month when we are together, and we are grateful!”

Women’s Ministry 2011 Kickoff LuncheonThursday, September 8

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW for our annual Women’s Ministry Kickoff Luncheon, Thursday, September 8, 12:00–1:15pm in Fellowship Hall. We will be blessed by an inspirational speaker and a lovely luncheon. Representatives from all of the weekly and monthly Bible studies and volunteer opportunities will be available with their study materials for you to peruse and consider how you might want to participate in one or more offerings for the year. Plan to invite your friends and enjoy a delightful time together with other women from our church.

Making a Difference: A First Pres “Hands-on” Mission Opportunity

Can you believe that First Church is planning an incredibly large and generous mission outreach to pack and send over 100,000 meals to starving children in developing countries? And we want

YOU to experience the joy of joining hands with hundreds of fellow church members to help minister to those in need. This is a wonderful family mission project called Grains of Grace. The church will need over 500 volunteers to commit two hours of time on Friday, October 7 (1:00pm–8:00pm), and Saturday, October 8 (8:00am–1:00pm), and we’re trying to get as many people as possible to sign up before May 15. If you can offer two hours of your time, or would like more information, please contact Carol Loyless, 244.0364 or [email protected].
