Graphic Communications Career Pathway Courses of Study Introduction to Graphics and Design The goal of this course is to provide all students with an introduction to the principles of graphic communica- tions and design and its place in the world. Students will acquire a fundamental understanding of the graphic communications and design world. They will learn the theories behind creating aesthetically pleasing designs and how to work with consumers. Exposure to career possibilities and discussion of ethical issues relating to graphic communications will be important themes in this course.

Graphic Communications Career Pathway

Courses of Study

Introduction to Graphics and Design

The goal of this course is to provide all students with an

introduction to the principles of graphic communica-

tions and design and its place in the world. Students will

acquire a fundamental understanding of the graphic

communications and design world. They will learn the

theories behind creating aesthetically pleasing designs

and how to work with consumers. Exposure to career

possibilities and discussion of ethical issues relating to

graphic communications will be important themes in

this course.

Courses of Study – continued

Graphic Design and Production

This course focuses on the procedures commonly

used in the graphic communication and design

industries. Students will gain experience in creative

problem solving and the practical implementation

of those solutions across multiple areas of graphic

communications. Students will understand and

manipulate color to achieve various outcomes

required by job specifications.

Advanced Graphic Design

Students will explore the principles of design and

layout procedures as they relate to graphic design.

Content will cover electronic systems and software

programs used in graphic design, page composition,

image conversion, and digital printing. Knowledge in

digital design and imaging will be enhanced through

experiences in school-based and work-based learning

opportunities. The student will explore and develop a

graphic design portfolio and resume in electronic,

print, and photographic formats.

Graphic Output Processes

Students gain experience in successfully completing

the output processes of various projects in an

increasingly independent manner. Students also learn

to manage the completion process including customer

relations management, printing, finishing, and binding.

Students accumulate work samples that will constitute

their personal portfolio. Upon successful completion

of the course, students are prepared to move into

employment or a post-secondary education

environment where self-motivation and a high

level of skill are expected.
