Grass Clippings DESERT BLUEGRASS ASSOCIATION Newsletter What’s New? By Dave Polston, DBA President I know a lot of you have taken this homebound time to get in lots of practice. I've heard that from quite a few of you. Some have been getting together in small groups or even through zoom. My positive experience from this pandemic is that my band has been working on our originals. Since we had 26 gigs to date cancelled, we decided to still get together and work on songs. This is the most we have practiced in eight years. I would still rather be gigging twice a week than practicing!! We are going into the studio on August 8 to begin our fourth CD. We have about 20 originals ready so maybe CD 4 and 5. I've also been working on my teaching skills and still have students both live and zoom. Teaching and playing through zoom has been a new challenge, as many of you know, and that I guess would be a positive experience on entering the new norm. Perhaps the next two months will see a reduction in cases and a vaccine. In the mean time, keep on pickin! Since we won't have much going on the next two months, let's hear from you guys and let us know how you have been handling this strange time! Musically or not. Stay safe and wash your dirty hands!! This is the sharing issue! See page 3 for informaon on sharing DBA memories or photos to help celebrate 25 years of the Desert Bluegrass Associaon. See page 5 for more about COVID Quaranning and consider sharing your experience! See page 7 about sharing the fun at the upcoming DBA Fall Campout! G reetings, all you pickers and grinners! (I hope you’re grinning behind that mask.) As of the writing of this article (what to write about?), I have nothing to write about, so let the rambling begin!! To answer your first question (when can we jam and when will workshops resume?), answer is I still don't know.

DESERT BLUEGRASS ASSOCIATION Newsletter

What’s New? By Dave Polston, DBA President

I know a lot of you have taken this homebound time to get in lots of practice. I've heard that

from quite a few of you. Some have been getting together in small groups or even through

zoom.

My positive experience from this pandemic is that my band has been working on our originals.

Since we had 26 gigs to date cancelled, we decided to still get together and work on songs.

This is the most we have practiced in eight years. I would still rather be gigging twice a week

than practicing!! We are going into the studio on August 8 to begin our fourth CD. We have

about 20 originals ready so maybe CD 4 and 5.

I've also been working on my teaching skills and still have students both live and

zoom. Teaching and playing through zoom has been a new challenge, as many of you know,

and that I guess would be a positive experience on entering the new norm. Perhaps the next

two months will see a reduction in cases and a vaccine.

In the mean time, keep on pickin! Since we won't have much going on the next two months,

let's hear from you guys and let us know how you have been handling this strange time!

Musically or not. Stay safe and wash your dirty hands!!

This is the sharing issue! See page 3 for information on sharing DBA memories or photos to help celebrate 25 years of the Desert Bluegrass Association. See page 5 for more about COVID Quarantining and consider sharing your experience! See page 7 about sharing the fun at the upcoming DBA Fall Campout!

G reetings, all you pickers and grinners! (I hope you’re grinning behind

that mask.) As of the writing of this article (what to write about?), I have

nothing to write about, so let the rambling begin!! To answer your first

question (when can we jam and when will workshops resume?), answer is I

still don't know.

A n anniversary is a great time to look back, reflect, and celebrate. And on the occasion of

the Desert Bluegrass Association’s 25th Anniversary, in the middle of a pandemic that has

many of us running for cover, what better time to celebrate a shared history and look forward

to a better tomorrow?

Twenty-five years is a particularly significant milestone for an all-volunteer, we-get-together-

just-because-we-want-to kind of organization. It is our shared love of making bluegrass music

— and the behind-the-scenes work from a number of dedicated volunteers — that have

sustained the Desert Bluegrass Association for 25 years.

In the previous issue of the DBA Newsletter (June-July 2020), Suzette Sommerer

shared one of those stories with us (and if you missed it, go and read it, right now!).

We’d love to hear even more.

PAGE 3 GRASS CLIPPINGS

I f you have a story, a memory, or photos to share, please get in touch with Suzette

Sommerer, who is compiling them for an upcoming celebratory booklet for the DBA.

From Suzette:

I will certainly hear a lot about our big events, but I’d love to hear about the hidden sto-

ries as well. DBA means many different things to so many people, and I’m finding this

project to be a rich tapestry of many threads. If you’re willing to share a bit of how DBA

has been a part of your life, please contact me at [email protected] or 240-463-

1985. I have already compiled a long list of people I’d like to interview in the coming

months, and I would like very much to add your name to that list.

To help celebrate, we’d love to hear your DBA story!

Welcome to our new and returning members:

Have you been COVID Quarantining?

Tell Us About It!

We are interested in hearing from readers who would share their COVID quarantine and confinement

experiences. We are hoping that some of you will share your stories — it might help cheer us up to remember we’re

not alone in this!

We’d like to hear your stories, in your words, but here are some ideas to get you started:

How are you coping? Going stir crazy, enjoying the solitude, or somewhere in between?

Is music helping you, and if so, how? Have you been practicing differently / jamming with friends / teaching or

learning over Zoom / missing live performances? What’s worked? What’s been a challenge?

Got a funny story about shortages?

Are you doing things you never thought you would, just to be doing something?

What is the first thing you want to do when this is all over?

Send your story (anything from a few sentences to a paragraph or so) to the newsletter editor, Cathy Larson, at

[email protected] (entries selected for publication may be edited for length or content).

Let us hear from you!

The jams will be held in the same large grass area as last year. There will be plenty of space for multiple jams with

social distancing. All the spots around the grass area have been reserved by DBA members. We would like to

keep it that way. If you have reserved a site and decide not to come, please let me know before you cancel your

reservation so that someone on the waiting list can pick up and immediately reserve your spot.

DBA CAMPOUT - FALL 2020 By Dale Lynne Vickroy

We still plan to have our campout at Patagonia

Lake October 2, 3, 4, 2020. Last year,

many enjoyed the location for fishing, boating,

hiking, bird watching and being near the lake as

well as for the jamming.

Due to COVID concerns , we plan on social

distancing, and the fresh air will provide extra

protection. Since we can use our own sani-

tized RVs and bring food from our own refrig-

erators, we feel that everyone can be safe

over the weekend. We would, however, like

feedback as to whether or not to plan a pot

luck or if everyone prefers to eat on their own.

We had a really nice time last year. This year we

hope more campers and Saturday day jammers will

be able to join us. For more info, contact: Dale

Vickroy at 520-664-0340.

That nasty virus is still going around!! Owing to public health concerns regarding the coronavirus outbreak, DBA has cancelled all jams and work-

This won’t go on forever, so check the DBA online

calendar for updates.

And in the mean time, wash your hands, stay at

TO INSTRUCTORS & BANDS

Would you like your services, band, and/or concerts listed on our website, at

www.desertbluegrass.org ? Current DBA members can be listed by sending their

contact information to Dale Lynne Vickroy at [email protected].

Refer to the “Links” tab on the homepage to view current band and instructor

information. We have added a second calendar on the website for other (non-DBA)

concerts and events. If you have something scheduled that you would like added to the

calendar: send me the date, time and address info. You may also include a link to your band's

website or to a special event flyer. Info can be posted under the “Events” tab. That would need

to be specifically requested since I expect that people will begin using the calendar instead.

Please submit information in plain text. Varied fonts, colors, formatting, and inserted graphics are

extremely time consuming to match in the webpage editor.
