Grateful Hearts
the Season of AdventPrepare the Way forPrepare the Way for
Thanksgiving is almost here, and we at LOUMC are truly grateful for you, our church family! Many things will be different this year . We know that . But we are grateful to journey through the seasons of Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas together with you, even though we are apart! As we prepare to move from Pumpkin Spice Lattes to Peppermint Stick Mochas, fall leaves and pumpkins to evergreen boughs and ornaments, let us remember that Thanksgiving is an opportunity for us to make giving thanks to God a part of our daily lives - not just for one day, but every day! Feeling overwhelmed by all of the worries of the world? Stop and give thanks for all that God has given us and all that is good . This is also a time to remember that what God has given is a gift to be shared and not hoarded! How appropriate is it, then, that we should enter the season of Advent with grateful hearts, ready to give back? As we enter the season of waiting, hoping, believing and light, let our lives be full of both thanks and giving!

Words from the Pastor
Dear church,
I must admit, I always feel weird writing these kinds of things . It’s almost like what I experience recording a sermon on Wednesday afternoon . It is so hard for me to talk with you without seeing you . Like many of you, I miss our regular rhythms . One of my favorite things in the world is the Sunday morning rush — making sure all things are together, speed walking around the building, in and out of the worship spaces, making chit chat, carrying my coffee and whatever else I need for that day, and most especially seeing the people . And to make things even more weird, it’s an odd experience to write this knowing that by the time it arrives at your home, we might know who our next president will be, or we might not . The world we live in is a weird one . The changes we’ve gone through in the past 10 months have been dramatic and overwhelming .
Given the reality of our world, our youth ministry focus this fall has been cultivating resilience within our volunteers and students . We have hiked, gone on bike rides, and done service projects . We have talked about overwhelm, mindfulness, prayer, and most recently gratitude . At our last October gathering, we had youth grab a jar, sticky notes or slips of paper, and a pen and challenged them to write one thing they’re grateful for each day and put it in the jar to see their gratitude grow throughout the next month . In both of our student ministry newsletters we invited parents to do likewise and to try discussing those grati-tudes one night a week at dinner or for the whole family to read their gratitudes together at the end of November . And today, I am inviting you to do the same!
Research shows that practicing gratitude has endless benefits—less fatigue, less burnout, better sleep, better overall health, happier mood, more satisfaction with life, and the development of wisdom, patience, and humility . How much better, especially in this weird world, would our lives be with those things! I think about Jesus’ promise for us to live abundant lives and those gifts of gratitude are gifts of abundance .
As we enter into the holidays, we know that it will be different . Many of us aren’t gathering like we usually do as a way to slow the curve and protect the vulner-able . That is incredible, and with that will come more grief . Starting this practice now will help us navigate and hold that grief in a more manageable way . Even amidst all that is happening—we can cultivate gratitude . Whether it’s the delay of the rainy season, or even that you woke up this morning! Nothing is too small to give thanks for .
Today, my gratitude is for each of you in this incredible community .
Thank you for being a part of Lake Oswego United Methodist Church.

Friends, as of this week we have received 67 pledges towards our 2021 church budget, totaling $223,600 . God bless your generous spirits! This is slightly more than half of what came in last year at this time . Since our budget is roughly $500,000, we are hoping that many of you who haven’t yet sent in your pledge cards will do so this week! The Finance Committee will shortly finalize our proposed budget
and present it to the Church Council for adoption . We understand that several of you are in limbo with regard to your future plans, because of Covid or uncertain-ties about your employment status . Like you, we are praying that these matters will be resolved soon, so that we can all get on with our lives and, especially, begin to worship together once again . To the extent possible, we
urge you to submit a pledge card as soon as you can, because that will help us map out our plans for 2021 . As always, we thank you for your support!

LAKE OSWEGO UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SHARES ADVENT CALENDAR –OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES
2020 has been a year of great challenges and changes . During this upheaval, Lake Oswego UMC is on a mission to give HOPE, LOVE, JOY and PEACE to those who need it the most in our community . LOUMC is excited to release the 2020 Giving Advent Calendar! Until this year, all our annual Advent activities took place in person . The church needed to quickly adapt to new ways to participate in these days of social distancing and keep the giving spirit of the season alive . With the dedication of LOUMC volunteers, “The Gifts of Hope” has been changed from an event to attend at the church, to an online site where it is possible to learn about and donate to a myriad of local nonprofit organizations . Your generous financial support is critical to these organizations . They especially can use your help this year . If you donate, it is possible to print out a Card stating a donation has been made in your honor . Nothing can replace our canceled Home for the Holidays bazaar, which is the United Methodist Women’s largest fundraiser of the year . We needed new ideas and/ realized that the KGW Great Toy Drive would be a good fit . The church has the perfect covered front porch to offer as an outdoor collection site . Who does not smile when thinking of the JOY a child has on Christmas morning receiving that special toy? It is also a gift for the parent who does not have the financial means to provide that toy . Due to pandemic guidelines, our sanctuary is now empty, so we have a large place to store toys over the course of the drive . What a JOY it would be to have it become filled with toys! Christmas themed face masks will be given to donors as an incentive while supplies last . The church’s 2020 Advent calendar focuses on daily outreach activities big and small . It is a tough year financially for many, so it includes suggestions for non-monetary ways to participate too . Everyone in the community can find ways to make meaningful connections and be in service to others . People are yearning to help each other during the COVID pandemic but may struggle to find safe ways to do so . The public can use the calendar as a guide for simple ways to all help neighbors, friends, and family . Details for Gifts of Hope and the KGW Great Toy drive can be found on the church website soon .The public will be invited to print their own Advent calendar by uploading it from www .lakeoswegoUMC .org or by picking up a copy from the church during office hours; M, T W, & TH 9am to 12pm . Lake Oswego UMC is located at 1855 South Shore Blvd, Lake Oswego 97034, phone 503-636-8423 TOGETHER…LET US END 2020 in JOY!
‘Tis the Season for Giving!

The Outreach Committee would like to invite all of you to donate Holiday Dessert Items to Lake Oswego Hunger Fighters ( the Lake Oswego food Pantry) . The types of items they would like to receive are: pie fillings, pie crusts, cookie mixes, chocolate chips, cake mixes, frosting, fudge making ingredients, gingerbread mixes, hot chocolate , marshmallows, puddings, cupcake papers, sprinkles, etc . You can bring them to the church during one of these drive by times: Tuesday, November 10th from 1:00- 2:30 pm or Thursday, November 12th from 6:00-7:00 pm . If you can’t make either of these times, you can leave items with Kelly in the church office Monday- Thursday from 9am to noon .Thank you for joining us to make someone’s holiday brighter . The world in which Jesus was born was far from placid . Fear, violence, and oppression abounded . Jesus’ entry into the world only added to that milieu .
For those in power, much was at stake . Ultimately, Jesus teachings would challenge and call for a new way of being in the world . It called for courage .The opening words of an anonymous Jewish poet, “I believe in the sun, even when the sun is not shining,” were scrawled on a prison wall during the Holocaust . This Advent, we will leverage this powerful narrative as our theme song . Let it’s melody and words befriend you this season! In its weekly hearing, we will be called to examine our own penchant for fear and mistrust as well as those things that threaten to sabotage our hope . The power of the narrative and music will call us to a courageous response: transformation and reconciliation to God and to each other through greater hope, love, joy and peace .
Rather than run away from music in this time of global pandemic, we will “fill the night with music” by inviting music to wash over us in our homes and perhaps finding ways to safely do so in our neighborhoods . To make the season tangible, look for home activities such as Advent Wreath and Luminary-making .
• So our faith may be lived out, try incorporating our “Reverse Advent Calendar” where we/our families engage in creative mission projects to bless others!
• This season, we also aim to “fill the night with light.” Just wait and see what’s in store on Christmas Eve!
This may be a different kind of Advent/Christmas, but as long as we find our “home” in the Christ child and with each other, “we can still believe,” even when the world does not look like we expected it . Let us be part of that healing and hope!“Raise your voice… raise it; don’t be afraid!” - Isaiah 40:9

Outreach
Two years ago LOUMC joined with 12 other churches to become part of Family Promise of Tualatin Valley . Each church agreed to house up to 4 families a week, four times a year . LOUMC recruited 58 church members to help . We hosted families several times, but then came Covid . Church buildings were closed, but there were still homeless people . Then, Washington County hired Family Promise to run their Emergency Shelter Program . The county had 15 motel rooms with kitchenettes and they agreed FP could use some of the rooms for our homeless families, and FP would begin to take single adults . This contract ends December 21st .

Family Promise Adapts During Covid
Gifts of Hope Will Be Online in December!
Please watch for the Gifts of Hope catalog (online and in the mail) during the month of December . Although we cannot gather in person to meet and learn about the organiza-tions that we support, there will be messages in the catalog from local philanthropies that will indicate their special needs and responses during 2020 . You will be able to support the groups of your choice via online or mail-in donations and honor someone with this special ‘gift’ via a card that can be mailed to you upon request . During this unique Christmas season,
Here are some amazing new stats about our ESP (Emergency Shelter Program)shared with us on October 30, 2020.
• Since opening our doors in June 2020, FP has received and contacted 165 referrals .
• Currently, 71% of households entering the ESP enter into housing .
• The ESP has provided 4,265 bed night .
• The incredible FP site coordinators and volunteers have provided 603 grocery orders .
• 22 households have stayed in our shelter (this does not include house-holds currently in the shelter—only those that have entered and exited) .
Family Promise has been reevaluating their program and they are looking for housing to use as a transitional shelter for their clients . There will be additional volunteer opportunities for LOUMC when the county contract ends . Right now we are grocery shopping for the motel residents every few weeks . Stay tuned for the next chapter and the ways you can help.
you can help educate a child, ease hunger,or help the homeless .
Remember the words of Jesus: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me .”

The All Saints’ Day service was a beautiful tribute to those who have gone before us .
After the May 25 death of George Floyd and marches for equality and justice took to streets all over our nation, pastorally, I felt a conviction to convene an Anti-Racism Forum . This group was open to all, intended to be a reading and conversation and group . Raising awareness was its key purpose . Diverse views were welcome as our agenda was non-partisan .At the end of October, we decided we wanted to regroup in January to discern a more narrow objective for the group . Indeed, that may lead to the birth of several groups to meet a variety of needs . As for me, it is my pastoral intention to launch an Advocate team for overall peace and justice concerns; a team that will also look at larger, systemic causes for many injustices, racism among them . The United Methodist Church already has a developed structure around both education and action on these issues . It is housed under the auspices of a Church and Society Team . If you are interested in getting in on the ground floor of this group’s formation AND in

Student Ministries
The Spotlight -Nov/Dec 2020
Our students are incredible . And it’s not just our students . It’s also our leaders and our students’ families, and those who give to sustain the activities of this ministry . I am learning from our volunteers and our students each time we are together and that is one of the most incredible gifts of ministry .
Last month we had a mission trip meeting where I announced, if it is safe, we will be going to Denver in 2021 . Quickly, our families expressed deep concern about our annual youth auction and given the reality of the economy in this season, we cannot be “tone deaf to our community .” So maybe better put, instead of thinking about just their students they were also thinking about the neighborhood . Our staff has had conversations about the youth, but I must admit I was unsure what to do about such a big event for our greater LOUMC community . It was in the concern and conversation in this community that we found the answer .
It simply isn’t right to do an auction this year . But, it did not stop there! A student suggested what if we gave back instead-- if we volunteered our time for the seniors in our church and community and gave back in other ways . What a beautiful solution! Canceling the auction never occurred as a possibility to me nor did turning the auction upside down in such a way . How incredible are these students? How thoughtful are these parents? How faithful are these youth leaders? Amidst their hectic lives, in a year like no other, this ministry within our church is doing deep work .
So, if you find yourself in need of some yard work or other tasks that our youth could help with-- please let me know! And if you are an adult looking for a way to cultivate your own faith through conversation and experience, reach out to me and we can find a place for you to be a part of this ministry!
Our Students Have Hearts to Serve!
Youth enjoyed being together in person for a socially distanced
bike ride in Portland!
Fun pumpkin painting event in the Olsons’ backyard! The students have been able to enjoy several outdoor, Covid-safe activities in person!
